The Beautiful Fall by Alicia Drake

I'm usually a fiction-reader, but after reading the description of the book and looking at the beautiful cover (the UK one on the left -yes I care about covers,) I decided to give The Beautiful Fall a try. It took me half a year to get through it, mainly because I stopped a few months during the holidays and exams, and it's also a bit thick and non-fiction.
The book is mainly about what it says on the cover: Karl Lagerfeld, Yves Saint Laurent and 'glorious excess in 1970s Paris', but it's also a lot more. The book goes through fashion from the 50s through Yves and Karl's journey, to changes in the fashion world in the 80s and 90s. It details the people who they hung out with, their career and the atmosphere of the fashion world in that period.
As someone who hasn't studied fashion and knew nothing about its history, this book really brought me a glimpse of what the fashion world was like back then: Back in the 70s, before fashion was strictly a business and creativity was important. And as someone who grew up knowing YSL only as an established brand name and from Stefano Pilati's designs, the book really drew out the genius and significance of Yves back in the 60s and 70s. He was THE designer who all women looked upon and relied on for fashion back then. Karl Lagerfeld on the other hand, was a freelance designer for a long time, designing from unknown brands to Fendi and Chloe, and eventually shot to fame in the 90s after Chanel hired him. He is amazing at adopting current trends with a brand's heritage and always learning new things.
The great thing about this book is that the author did not favour either one of the designers and showed the genius and disadvantages of both the designers. And while it was great to read about Yves and Karl, the best thing about this book is that you see how the fashion business has changed throughout the 60s to the 90s, mainly the Paris scene but also the international scene in general. So if you're interested in a bit of modern fashion history, give the book a try!

  4. Oh, I haven't read it, and actually it is my first time to hear about it. But from your description, that book kind of reminds of another best-seller about fashion world - the Fashion Conspiracy, which was published almost 20 years ago. It is worth reading if you are interested in the shaping of the fashion business back from 1970s to 1980s. I got that book from an user on Amazon.com, and I have to say what a gem! Something that indeed stunned me is that although 20 years on, all the stuff in thar book is still going on nowadays, if not even more.

I'll definitely have a go with this one you recommend as well. BTW, love your blog so much! Keep it on and on. @@

  11. Isn't this the book where there was this big hoo-ha over? Uncle Karl was apparently upset with some of the things in the book and claims that alot of them are incorrect. Apparently the author didn't check up his facts and get his things right.

  12. Elle Yup, this is the book Karl tried to sue the author (for privacy invasion i think), but the law suit didn't go through. Honestly, while no one knows who's right and who's wrong, I'm not interested in the gossip details on Karl's life. It's the big picture that the book presented that I am interested in.

Ashley -Sorry, don't know where you can buy it in HK. I got mine on Amazon. Maybe you should ask at book stores like Page One.

Vanessa and Mrs F -The cover is so gorgeous. I think it's from an old Paris Vogue.

  16. I loved this book as I feel it captured the essence of what was fashion in those years.

After reading some of the descriptions of YSL's collections I was moved to find photos of them on the internet. It also helped me understand why, sadly, his final collections were essentially repetitions.

Likewise, I finished this book with a whole new understanding of KL. I really didn't expect it. I had always viewed KL as a bit on the strange and uncomprehensible side - his latest "thin" encarnation is even a bit creepy - but now I understand a lot of what is his driving force and motivation. So despite KL not liking some of the details published, I have to say this book actually improved my opinion of him.

To me it's like YSL and KL are equally brilliant forces but with very different dinamics: YSL the lunar archetype of the tortured genius, shining like a supernova and then burning out; KL the solar man churning out a constant creative stream.

  17. I realize this might be a given for some, but I have wandered for a while why so many people only like to read fiction. What do you think?

  18. I don't think MK looks better, they look equally chic in my opinion, I can't choose!

Claire's dress is fantastic on her but Kate Bosworth... ew, she looks like she's sucking on a lemon. Very frightening.

My favourite is Irina's Phillip Lim dress. Unbelievably gorgeous.

  19. I would actually say that this book is definitely MORE pro-Yves than pro-Karl. It's not exactly anti-Karl, but it paints a more favourable and idealistic picture of Yves. The author suggests that EVERYONE wanted to be in Yves's clique, while Karl was still somewhat of a nobody who tended to be somewhat of a control freak.

  21. I reviewed this book and it was an amazing history, however, the author clearly favors Saint Laurent...clearly. Not a bad thing, just saying.

  30. These wallpapers are moody and rich in shadow. Think crumbling crypts, dense forests, or cursed castles. Often inspired by gothic literature and horror films, they are perfect for fans of atmospheric storytelling. They may even include quotes from Poe, Lovecraft, or Shelley, adding a literary touch.

  31. In the realm of interior design, Hello Kitty wallpapers extend far beyond digital screens. Many people decorate their bedrooms, workspaces, or even home offices with Hello Kitty-themed wallpaper murals. From accent walls in soft baby pink to bold wallpaper prints covered in Hello Kitty and her friends, these designs create a joyful and welcoming atmosphere. Children’s rooms often feature full Hello Kitty themes, complete with matching bedding, wall decals, and accessories. But Hello Kitty interior design isn’t just for kids—many adults embrace the nostalgic, feminine aesthetic for their creative spaces, dressing walls with sophisticated monochrome or vintage Hello Kitty prints. These physical wallpapers offer the same sense of warmth and happiness as digital ones but on a much grander, more immersive scale.https://colornjoy.com/
