SS07 Trend: Micro-Shorts

Micro-shorts are one of the big trends this summer. At first I was completely against the idea of micro-shorts -they can easily make one look slutty and overexposed.
Another reason why I didn't like micro-shorts was because I don't like high-waisted shorts, which are oh-so-in this season. They remind me of outdated, old-fashioned shorts or bikini bottoms. Plus they're very unflattering.
But then I thought it would be cool to wear micro-shorts underneath all the long, tunic tops I had. You know the tops that kind of cover your butt but not really if you move? I didn't want to wear leggings underneath because that's a way too 80's-bicycle-shorts thing to do. So instead of skinny jeans, I thought shorts would be a fun, refreshing alternative for summer, provided they're low/mid-waisted. Last summer I tried this look (long top over tiny shorts like Nicole Richie here) with a skirt because I wasn't bothered to find shorts. But with shorts everywhere now, it's definitely time to get a pair!
Lindsay Lohan is so rocking the shorts here.
And Hilary Duff looks so pretty and summery here with that girly top and micro black shorts. I love how her outfit is looks so casual but still pretty and put-together. (Plus, notice the matching baby blue camisole underneath and the Miu Miu Mary Janes.)
So onto my search for the perfect micro-shorts. I origianlly only wanted a black pair, but the Kate Moss denim shorts had a really great wash and design so I couldn't resist trying them on.
But after I finally got those four buttons buttoned (they look cool but oh-so-annoying to put on,) I realised how seriously short they were. I mean, I would like to move around in them and I just didn't feel comfortable. Not to mention we must remember that Kate Moss looks cool in them for obvious reasons.
Then I tried on these Top Shop shorts, but the back pockets were just really ugly.
I love this pair by the Top Shop Kate Moss line -love the row of buttons along the sides (which you can't really see in the photo). Unfortunately, the Oxford Circus shop ran out of Size 8's and the sizes run big for this design. I'm obviously fated not to own them.
Ugh, maybe I'll just settle for that boring pair I saw at Mango today. Afterall, the shorts are just going to be worn under my long tops and are hardly going to be visible -they don't have to be that perfect. Anyone tried out micro-shorts yet? How are you wearing them?

  1. hello,
i'm male but a fashion designer in singapore.
I think that high waisted shorts can be worn with a short sleeve shirt and tie, smart yet casual. why not give it a shot?

    cheers!

  4. I just wear the jean ones with a plain colored t-shirt and sandals. You would'nt think it would look good, but it actually does.

  5. I love my new shorts! They are perfect to dress up, and for the pool! The long tunic tops look great with them! Your right who cares what they are as long as they look great!

  6. I was trying some on at urban outfitters the other day...they have some cute patterned micro shorts. I personally hated them because it was impossible to figure out where the waistband should be on you, and anywhere you put it it bunches. Another problem I had with them was that I have a tiny waist but thicker legs, so 2's fit around my waist, but 4's fit around my legs.

    uughhh.

  7. this trend scares me. as well all know, if it becomes mainstream enough, there will be folks walking the streets who should not be donning micro-shorts.

  8. i own a pair of shorts from last year's pull and bear collection. they have the same wash and the same buttons, but they fit a little bit looser and longer, so don't give up, i think you can find the similar looking shorts in other stores...

  10. I just love your blog! You were super right about the short-shorts trend, they're popping up everywhere. I have even seen them in "non-trendy" stores like Abercrombie, for example. I always thought those jean Kate Moss shorts were longer, though. They sort of look "normal-length" on her. :)

  11. I love micro shorts, but I am cursed with larger legs no matter how skinny I am, and alas cannot wear them. What would you say the most flattering shorts for a naturally curvy body type would be?

  12. i'm from singapore and i wear short shorts all the time cos they're comfy and let my skin breathe! i recently got the kate moss denim ones you tried on too and they are obscenely short! the only reason i got them was cos i couldn't bear to put them back on the rack where all the crazy skinny fashion types were circling like vultures the night her collection opened here.
that was a S$90 fashion disaster!

  13. the "micro shorts" have definately been in fashion in australia for a couple of years (for obvious reasons - insanely hot summers and most of the population living near a beach). while i cant do the shorts justice (they do NOT suit my figure at all), girls live in them all summer (and even heading up to winter) long. i think they look best with casual tees and cute sandals (day look), or black shorts with a loose, pretty top and killer heels (night look).. probably looks best with a tan (fake of course, don't want to get skin cancer!)

  14. Awesome post, and awesome idea! I'm definitely going to try this out. Hey, I think I'm going to go with really thin american apparel-ish shorts. I am afraid that wearing something with a button and zip fly and pockets will make the tunic puff out and I don't have the figure to wear such an unflattering outline. :(

  18. I don't have the legs for microshorts. I love the way Kate Moss wore them with Wellies at the Glastonbury Festival. So cool. I can't see many others pulling it off though. They'd have to have legs like Cameron Diaz for it to really work. You run a very high risk of looking skanky too and I can see all the 14-year-olds in my town getting a whiff of this trend and that would not be pretty.

  20. I'm jealous of girls that can wear microshorts and look grate in them, butI'm not one of those, just can't imagine wearing them, it would be too scary.
But, I think you're right they look great in combination with long tunic tops, much better than leggings!

  21. I'm loving the black bubble mini-shorts I bought at Armani Exchange recently.

    Short, but not vulgar. Perfect.

  22. I was a bit weary of the shorts phenomenon at first due to the whole thigh-highlighting factor so i went with a cas pair of denim cut-off style - see lindsay lohan she looks great - for day and cheated the nighttime version of black short shorts by opting for a fabulous black mini skirt from guess that has just a hint of bubble shape to disguise my thigh.

  23. argh the micro shorts on the runway aren't even wearable... i hate seeing celebrities imitating that exact look because they look plain idiotic but i do like the variation versions of it =)
