Velvet Torch

All summer long, HG and I have been wondering- where does one go to buy nice cheap but chic dresses to go with all the dress trends that have been so popular recently. I mean, dresses aren't quite the cheapest thing on the menu.
So the other day when I was shopping at Nordstrom on my way to pick up a baby gift, I passed by the Juniors section and saw a number of cute dresses. Intrigued I took a closer look- and found some more really cute looking dresses at a REALLY cheap price ($50's)! Now I know the quality and cutting might not be the same, but since I have a slight frame anyway, I picked up a bunch and gave them a try- and was impressed to find that the fit was quite good- better than Forever 21! After much debating and taking photos of myself in the changing room (the lighting is so bad though), I finally settled on this silver shift dress. I thought it was simple and chic, perfect for dinner and a night out! I spent the longest time trying to decide between silver and gold too. I finally decided on silver because I thought it contrasted with my pale skin tone better and would match my grey boot, but now that I'm home I'm not too sure.....thoughts?
Anyway, that dress was by this brand called Velvet Torch. With a little googling, I found the rest of the collection on the Nordstrom website and thought- wow, not bad at all! These two are my favourite for fall. The black one with the bell sleeves is super cute. And the grey check one is prim and ladylike, with the neckline adding some fun to it.
Cute eyelet dresses. Though these were probably better for summer.
I love the simple cutting of the plain black dress (left). Its great for....all day. And the grey/black dress (right) is just the thing to wear going out during the day.
And then there are these adorable printed dresses.

Sigh, these are so cute! I can't wait to go back when it goes on sale and buy some more. Who knew shopping in the Juniors section could be so fruitful?

i'm going to be honest.. i think the first dress (the silver shift) is a bit of a fashion disaster. personally, i just dont like the shape or the colour.

the dresses i DO like in this post are the eyelet dresses... VERY CUTE!

I have to agree with Mimi, sorry. It doesn't seem to sit in the right places.

But I also love the eyelet dresses, particularly the yellower one.

i agree with mimi and lights out...the dress is very fashion victim-y. i think you might look much better with the black dress with the bell sleeves, and instead of black tights and grey boots (especially since you're petite, you don't want to "section-off" your body into different parts with diff. colors- it'll make you look shorter) maybe you could try black tights and a pair of black/colorful flats. you have nice calves and should be able to pull it off!

i'm sorry but i have to agree with everyone who dislike the metallic dress.. it's loose in an unflattering kind of way, and i only like metallics to accentuate outfits, a metallic dress with this cut looks kinda like a plastic bag.. but i really like the other dresses by the brand. especially #1 and #6. also here is a fabulous way to wear eyelet dresses in fall:

If i were you i would have done just what you did. The silver dress would be something different for my wardrobe. The other dresses are definitely cute and wearable... But being fashionable means pulling off most unusual type of garments and feeling confident about it. Being different is quite refreshing.

In short, I adore your silver dress!

I totally adore that silver dress! I would get it in gold, personally, because it brings out my pale skin (and it matches my gold Razr!)

that dress is neat, now I want to see what the gold looks like, that'd be my choice if I were getting one! I should check out Nordstroms...

like you said, it may be the horrible dressing room light, but the whole metallicness of the dress looks a little too....matrix for me. plus, the fabric catches the light in the wrong place and just makes you look wide.

I actually like the silver metallic dress. If worn right it would actually look amazing. i actually want a gold metallic dress (I have dark skin and gold looks fabulous against it) after seeing another girl in it at a party. It was too fashion victim-y at all. with that dress you don't need much accessories, a nice clutch, simple earrings and you're good.

Strictly speaking, I don't think it's a shift (at least not in that photo). I don't know, it seems a bit too long on you. I really like the colour and the shininess of the materian, and the neckline, but try it with lighter stockings perhaps, maybe some light grey (ribbed!!) ones? And some shoes that don't cut you off at the ankle...

Personally, I love the fuschia/black/cream printed dress at the bottom <3<3

honestly -- there are certain trends that can look tacky and cheap when bought inexpensively -- metallic is one of them.

I love your blog and think your style is spot-on, but in this instance, i have to agree with the first few posts -- that dress is a terrible cut, it looks cheap and trashy - and not in a good way.

I like the dress on you, if you have a lot of more basic dresses then this will really be a good addition to your wardrobe. And I like the tights and boots with it!! Don't mind the rest of them!

Oh and I love the black and white one at the bottom!

Wear Your Summer Dresses This Fall! Fashion tips from www.artfulwears.com

No one wants the Summer to end, but before you move all the Summer clothes out of your closet we think you should read this. Many of your Summer dresses can be transformed to fit into your Fall wardrobe. While they don’t necessarily ALL work for the Fall, many of them do.

Take for example the Red & Black Polka Dot Dress by Sugar Lips. It’s the perfect cool and comfortable Summer dress but easy to wear during the cooler months. Add a great pair of black tights and either a black velvet blazer or black cropped sweater, a great pair of heels or boots, and this dress just became all season. Not to mention, it can also be work appropriate. Double bonus!

Another great dress to give you options for fall is the Black Cotton Cocktail Dress by A To Z. A solid neutral dress gives you a few more options than a patterned dress. With this piece, you could put a great long sleeve tee underneath in either a color or a neutral. Layer a great jacket or cardigan over it. Again, with black you can play with color or pattern. Since this dress is solid you can add solid, patterned, or textured tights depending on your choices for your top. Layered with a jacket, cardigan, or long sleeve tee it’s work appropriate. If you want to dress it up, add a great belt.

We hope this helps you maximize your wardrobe! Visit www.artfulwears.com for more tips, tricks, and hot items!

if i'm just looking at the dress i think i like it. it is hard to pull off though, and i don't like the tights and the ankle boots. ankle boots can be tricky too, especially (IMO) if you don't have super skinny legs.
if you're going to pull it off, do it sans tights et ankle boots and just go with peep toep pumps as someone mentioned earler.

as someone with really pale skin, I would have gone with gold because gold warms up your skin tone :) But I love the dress.

such cute dresses. and I love the silver.
I wouldn't wear them with those boots, personally. Too much gray; and the shades are a bit off.

Other than that, silver is definitely the way to go.

I'd have to agree with those who don't like the metallic dress. It just seems so flashy, perhaps it's the fabric. But I can't see myself being able to wear that anywhere.

I do love the eyelet dresses. Altohugh, it is more fitting for summer.

I have my eye on the simple black dress. =)

girl. honestly.

the dress might be okay with black peep toe pumps.

other than that it could be a halloween costume.

the fit is horrible, your legs show you to be a skinny girl but that dress makes your hips look 4 feet wide.

I also dislike the silver dress. Wearing that dress creates some kind of "I came from the space"-feeling. It looks pretty ridiculous.
