To everyone-who-actually-enjoys-looking-at-glamorous-stars-in-gowns' relief, Oscar's wasn't cancelled. Stars went all out (in terms of the sizes of the gowns) this year as the Golden Globes ceremony was cancelled. This year, the main trend in the gowns were huge, black or red gowns, and empire dresses for the pregnant. The dresses were all pretty 'safe'. I'm going taking note of the dresses I liked here:
My favourite dress of the night was probably Cameron Diaz's Dior dress. Yes, it's not a particularly exciting dress, but I'm a fan of the fabric folds. It's simple, well-designed and pretty. And while it's arguable whether her makeup is too simple for Oscar's, I really like how she sticks to her natural-beauty style.
A trend seemed to be the long, simple dress + big necklace combo. Both Nicole Kidman (in Balenciaga) and Keri Russell (in Nina Ricci) looked very elegant. I thought Keri Russell's dress' colour looks really etheral on her, and the necklace is just a perfect match.
Black was one of the two popular colour choices, and huge gowns were equally popular. I thought the best was Hilary Swank's Atelier Versace gown, with Penelope Cruz's Chanel Couture coming in second.
The other popular colour choice was red. Katherine Heigl looked gorgeous as usual. However, I am getting a bit bored of her old Hollywood look, and her makeup seems a bit overloaded (-the blush).
Heidi Klum's vampy dress was comparatively interesting and she was equally gorgeous (in a slightly different way.)
The Marchesa girls: Anne Hathaway looked really pretty. I like how the dress is one-shouldered in an interesting way, especially the way the fabric looks like it falls and wraps around her arms so perfectly. As for Jessica Alba, she looked pretty (hard to imagine her not looking pretty), but she could probably have done better.
The two people who actually chose interesting dresses were Cate Blanchett, who wore Dries Van Noten and Marion Cotillard, who wore Jean Paul Gaultier. I love how the JPG isn't only shaped like a mermaid, but it also has silver 'scales' on it, and the dress didn't look like a costume. Not surprisingly, Marion Cotillard's dress was many critics' favourite. If you've read my thoughts above, then you'll probably notice that I wasn't overly enthusastic about the dresses. They're weren't bad, but just not stunning or surprising. Whose dress was YOUR favourite?

Where is Helen Mirren?? She looked amazing!
ReplyDeleteCam Diaz's dress was so wrinkled it was hard to get past that to appreciate anything else. I didn't like it at all.
My fav dress of the night was Jennifer Garner. Beautiful! Keisha Whitaker looked awesome as well.
Cameron and Heidi looked amazing! Loved the colors and the cuts of both dresses!
ReplyDeleteHeidi's Fantastic!!!
ReplyDeleteHelen Mirren
Cameron Diaz
thats it !
I hate Nicole's .

ReplyDeletedefinately the best dressed
I think Anne Hathaway look absolutely stunning. The red looks good on her, and I love how it drapes across her arm.
ReplyDeleteI want that dress. :)
hi! i'm going to paris in a few weeks and i don't know anything about shopping there. so i was wondering if someone could tell me where are the best places to shop and cheapest but good stuff you know? i really need some help. tks
ReplyDeleteLOVED Heidi Klum and Marion!
ReplyDeleteI love Cameron's dress too, and how she was loyal to her natural-make-up-style. Pe was amazing, and so do Hillary.
ReplyDeleteNice blog. Love the photos & articles! =) Great read!

ReplyDeleteKeri Russell's dress looks like a dirty slip. Nicole looks better than usual, although perhaps a bit matronly in that pose. Her dress is so simple and elegant though so it stands out.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite: Katherine Heigl. The fit was perfect and I loved the shoulder detail. I thought her hair, makeup and jewelry were beautiful compliments to the dress.
ReplyDeleteMy least favorite: Anne Hathaway. She looked fantastic but the dress was too much. Please, either the shoulder drape or the floral drape. But not both. I thought it looked like a Hawaiian lei.
Marion Cotillard hands down.
ReplyDeleteKatherine Heigl and Anne Hathaway looked amazing!!!
ReplyDeleteI thought Cameron Diaz's dress was pretty, but what's up with all the creasing and wrinking across the thighs?? Also, have you seen it from the back? More wrinkles-it definately wasn't made for sitting.
ReplyDeleteI thought Marion Cotillard looked beautiful. Heidi's dress, also, was stunning (not sure what Heidi was doing at the Oscars, as she's not in the movies or married to someone who is) is a really unique way.
Marion Cotillard was definitely my favorite! she looks like a goddess! second place is shared by:
ReplyDelete-Anne Hathaway, the color looked exceptionally good on her and she was one of the few women who actually looked dressed up.
-Penelope Cruz, she was working the black. gorgeous woman.
-Jennifer Garner, she isn't usually my favorite fashionista but the pictures aren't doing her justice here because on TV she looked exquisite (thanks to her necklace+hair+make-up)
-points to cate blanchett for not wearing the same thing as everyone else.
I don't know why everyone else looked like they were wearing the same thing, I got sickened by the over-used red. jessica alba was a disappointment, she raised the bar so high on her previous oscar attendances, so I expected more of her.
keri russel and cameron diaz both looked fresh and adorable even though their dresses aren't anything special.
the ones I HATED were:
-heidi klum: she looked like a she-vampire with small/asymmetrical/facing-different directions boobs. and i hate her hair.
-tilda swinton: she was just scary. she's wearing lanvin and that garbage bag is what she chose??? would it kill her to put on a dab of make-up, I mean COME ON it's the oscars.
Hi Carolina-
ReplyDeleteThere is so much more to Paris that shopping, but if you're so inclined...
The best window shopping is definately to be had along the Avenue Montaigne, where all the big couture shops are, from Dior to Chanel. The Champs-Elysees is OK (the LV megastore is there, and a huuuge Sephora), but it's more hype than anything, really. Thre's also a really unique "drugstore" called Publicis right up at the top of the street near the Arc de Triomphe that sells everything from art books to interesting mustards to Chloe baby clothing. The little streets off the Champs-Elysees are also full of interesting high-fashion stores. The area near the Place Vendome (where the Ritz is) is also good for window-shopping very expensive jewelry and watches.
A good place to shop vintage is Free ‘P’ Star, near the Centre Georges Pompidou. Google the address. It's a really interesting tiny vintage shop that's ridiculously cheap (my cousin found a cute dress for 2 euros!). There's also a store called Le Mouton à Cinq Pattes on Blvd St-Germain that sells designer stuff.
Another good place to actually buy affordable clothing is the Montparnasse area. There's a street (the name escapes me) with shops such as Zara, HM, and Etam. The Marais and Beaubourg districts, and rue Etienne-Marcel are also interesting to walk around and shop in. There's a cool store callen American Retro on the rue Etienne-Marcel.
The classics, of course, are the Galleries Lafayette at Blvd Haussman and La Samaritaine by the Seine. Colette is the place-of-the-moment, they have everything from kitschy books to Prada; it's near the Louvre.
Some other really Parisian places to shop include the Sheakspeare and Co book shop near Notre Dame cathedral, the bouquinistes along the Seine (for touristy and vintagey stuff), and definately the many covered passages (precursors of malls!) are great for curiosities.
I also really like the Ile Saint-Loius.
Hope this long-winded reply was useful! Feel free to email me (ledded@gmail.com) if you want to know more!
I loved how Keri Russell looked in her dress. I think she's so pretty naturally and that her inner beauty (not to sound cheesy) really shines through in this dress because it's not over the top. I also like it b/c it reminds me of the sea.
ReplyDeleteKatherine Heigl was my favorite but I agree about her makeup, It was a little bit too much. She looks stunning natural or with natural makeup.

I know Renee Z looked a lot like she had not eaten since last month, but I adored her silver beaded dress - not sure who it was by though?
ReplyDeleteI just can't get over how hideous that white monstrosity is on Mademoiselle Cotillard. Her bust looks like I don't know what? Styrofoam? Frozen blobs of whipped cream? Cumulonimbus clouds at 32,000 feet? Gack! C'est unbon or however you say BAD in French. Mal or something. Yes, I know I am ignorant of French, but I know that looks BAD. And the number next to her there, the purple dress on Miss Blanchett. What is that scarf thing? It's UGLY! And doesn't match! And I agree there is too much radioactive red! When you're out of ideas, wear red I guess.
ReplyDeleteI am not a big fan of Marion Cotillard's dress. Although I guess she deserves credit for creativity I think she looks like she is trying to bring back Disney's Ariel. It looks like her dress is made up of tons of shells that make clink together with each step she takes.
ReplyDeletehaha!! My friend JOnas Hallberg styled Cameron for the awards!!! love his work! ;)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Heidi Klum's dress. The interesting neckline and red colour look great on her.
ReplyDeleteI agree with one of the first comments, I did not care for all the folds and wrinkles on the bottom half of Cameron Diaz's dress. Great dress, but it looked unpressed and unfinished.
ReplyDeleteI did not like what Renee Z. wore either. Great dress, but I thought it was a poor choice for her.
Penelope Cruz, Helen Mirren, Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Garner, and Heidi Klum all looked great.
Katherine Heigl looked great as usual, but I wish she would choose a modern look once in a while.
And finally, I loved the dress Marion Cotillard wore. I thought it was one of the few risky and brave choices of the evening. I loved all the obvious detailing and handcrafting. The only problem is I feel her dress is one of those that looks better in person than print/tv. But my best of the night regardless.
you can see cate blanchett's undergarment line which is really tacky and the two sides of her bodice look like lopsided square burger buns from is it krystal? white castle? maybe both. hideous dress. they all look like they weren't sure if the oscars was really going to go off or not so why bother planning and then at the last minute grab some odd thing
ReplyDeleteMy favourite was Marion Cotillard, her gown was different and interesting and it made her look great, though I think it had to be seen in real life to appreciate all that couture worksmanship that went into it.
ReplyDeleteI also liked cameron diaz (lovely colour and construction) and cate blanchett (i do give her some concenssion for being pregnant) - dries van noten is such a refreshing choice!
A lot of people hated what tilda swinton wore and though it was not a remarkable dress, i kind of liked the fact that she follows her own way (no makeup for example, simple hairdo) - she does choose unusual but great designers from time to time. Nevertheless she cuts an interesting figure with her strange choices, her arty/intellectual airs and scottish upbringing.
Great actresses in their fashion clothings...

I heart Cameron Diaz.
ReplyDeleteNice blog anyway !!
Thumbs up!!
hhmm let me make a pick of my choice. I like the dress of Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz and Anne Hathaway
