OK, so my problem is that I need a brilliant colour-protecting shampoo and conditioner. Sounds fairly simple, but with all the products available out there, I really need more information and opinion.
My first thought was to buy the Reflection line from Kerastase, (my favourite haircare brand). But I have heard that Kerastase shampoo is a bit 'thick' for summer and I'm concerned that it might not wash my hair thorough enough. On Friday, I only ended up buying a tiny travel pack for my trip to the US next week. But I got a bit curious so I already tried the shampoo this morning and my hair felt clean enough. Maybe I'll go buy this tomorrow.
Another colour-protecting line I am considering is the L'Oreal Professional Vitamino shampoo & conditioner. I have used another product line by this brand a long time ago, and even though I can't even remember which shampoo it was that I used, I remember liking this brand. Also, a lot of hair salons use this brand, so it must be somewhat good quality. But this brand is fairly expensive, and the MUA reviews didn't seem overly impressed (or disappointed), so I don't feel absolutely sure about this line.
And of course, how could I not mention a deep hair treatment. This is oddly the only product I don't have to waste any more time researching on. Since I'll be going to the US soon, I'll definately be buying Terax Crema. I've heard only positive things about it -it's supposed to make your hair super soft. Hopefully it will save my seriously dehydrated hair!
So if you have used any colour-protecting hair products, let me know which brand and product it is, and your opinion of it please!
the reflection line from keratase is anne hathaway's fave too. heh. i read that last night in an interview. she's got gorgeous hair, so i trust her.
ReplyDeleteI've had really good luck with Pureology's Serious Color Care line, shampoo & conditioner & then Pureology Serious Colour Care Power Dressing. My hair stylist uses it and she's never once tried to shove it on me, but I kept notice of what she used and I fell in love with the stuff.
ReplyDeleteI work at a high-end beauty salon in Connecticut... and in my opinion, yep go with Pureology... it's sulfate free so it won't strip the color, and also is 100% vegan with no animal produced ingredients, or animal testing/cruelty.
ReplyDeleteAs far as a conditioning treatment... terax is pretty average, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. There's a hair mask that's super hydrating and safe for color by the company Framesi... it comes in an olive colored tub and the specific line it's from starts with "Bio-"... let me see... Well, maybe it's not framesi. I know exactly where it is in the store and what it looks like but the name isn't coming to me... I'll get back to you, I work on Tuesday, haha!

Kerastase claimed that colour won't come out during shampooing. Actually I tried it last week. I had my hair highlighted in red. When I washed my hair with Kerastase, I still saw some pink colour water running out. I accepted it because last time when I washed my hair with other shampoo, I saw bright red colour water.
ReplyDeletei live in asia, so hair colouring is the norm here. personally i dig the reds, but browns and ash tends to be more common..
ReplyDeletegenerally, red is a colour that washes out really quickly.. only second to that of purple. do not even consider dyeing your hair purple, especially if you are asian or are very brunette, cos it will never show or will wash out in a week.
anyway, cos of the frequent washing out of red, i tend to dye my hair myself and save tons of money by doing it myself.
personally, the colour booster reds from loreal.. the COLOUR BOOSTER range.. they have a small tube that will boost the red such that your hair can absorb it.. but always buy the colour u want and not a shade lighter because the shade does come out.. unless u have virgin hair of course.
bcos i do it myself and don't get treatments from the hairdresser and dye my hair once a month. so that the red is well maintained (plus yes.. i can hop btwn the various reds..) you would have thought that my hair would have broken off by now.. but no, my hair is a healthy shoulderblade length with only a few drier ends which can be easily rectified by any hairdresser.
this is how i do it (plus i don't use very "good" brands.. instead i'm using it for the smell. heh)
after dyeing,
use the loreal shampoo which comes with the dye to take off the dye. just follow the box's instructions.
how to protect ur hair
1) immediately get any hair treatment. i use pantene. cos well it's cheap.. but heavy. so make sure it's well washed off. leave it in for 5 minutes. then wash off.
2) get an colour conditioner. i use the clairols herbal essences in rose hip for damaged hair or dyed hair. leave it in and then wash off.
by touching ur hair now, it should feel soft and not crack-ly or like dry grass....
3) dry your hair and blow dry and see ur colour emerge.. finish off with any leave in conditioner..
basically, my day to day regime is always that of clairols herbal essences (rose) shampoo and conditioner and once a week diy treatment..
personally, it's not the maintenance of colour that you should worry about.. but the quality of your hair and whether it stays in good shape.. cos u can always colour hair yourself.. and really.. after like a few dyes.. you realise that highlights will naturally emerge as well.. (wow that saved me 100 bucks)
I LOVE terax crema. Really makes a difference. The girls in my office this summer swears by it too!

ReplyDeleteMy mom's been dying her hair for a while now (at least 8 years, I think?) and it's still remarkably soft and shiny and the color doesn't leave her hair that quickly. She uses Biogenol shampoo (if that's the right spelling.. is that what those other people were trying to think of?) and some Modern Organic Product leave-in cucumber conditioner. It makes her hair soft and it smells really fresh, especially for summer, so that's what I'd recommend.

ReplyDeleteI have the L'oreal shampoo and conditioner pictured above. I really don't think it is worth the money. I have thick hair that is prone to being oily. The hair products are fair too 'heavy' and seem to really weigh my hair down. I will not be buying this again! Have you thought of trying Aveda? Their products are very reliable and smell absolutely beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI use Artec products to keep my color intact. I have platinum blonde hair and I hate nothing more than when it starts to fade to a yellow tone. To keep my hair the white blonde I use the blonde violet shampoo and it works wonders!
ReplyDeleteThey have a whole range of color depositing shampoos and conditioners. I used it for my "run lola run" red hair a few years backa nd it kept the color perfect until my next dye job - totally worth it!
I love John Frieda for color-protecting shampoos. Also, my stylists swears by Bumble & Bumble's. As for deep conditioners, I suggest Davines' NouNou Pak...it is a TRULY amazing hair mask. Seriously...it totally repaired my hair after coloring. If it's too heavy for you, just put it in during the shower and rinse out like a normal conditioner. Or you can try Infusion 23 Leave In Treatment...which is a cheap drugstore way to go. It works really, really well and my colorist has seen hair transform back into healthy, shiny hair after use.

I found that you can find shampoos and conditioners in bulk on Ebay for a fraction of the price (I saved about $80 last month on haircare alone).
I do love the freshness and scent of the Kerastase range, though I wouldn't recommend the cheap store brands like Pantene - you get what you pay for there.
I have long thick hair so i have to use more product than some people so i always opt for the cheaper option of garnier fructise or however you spell it.. and i think it works great... but i also have some bumble and bumble "deep" i use for like a week after i dye it until its not so damaged.. hope that helps!
ReplyDelete@ Anonymous (4:39 am), I too have long thick (brown) hair. I used to use Garnier Fructis, but after awhile I felt that it dried out my hair. (Same with the John Frieda Brunette line.) It may be cheap, but for the most part, I stick with Pantene (moisturizing) and I think it does a great job. I should note that every few months, I switch to a different shampoo & conditioner to give my hair a break. I think this helps.

Thanks for everyone's help! I ended up buying the Kerastase shampoo, but I'll probably just use whatever conditioner I have at home, (the Kerastase Reflection conditioner is apparently being updated so it wasn't available.)

ReplyDeleteMy hair is cut short,colored, relaxed and I'm African American, so moisture is always a concern for me. I'm not too bad off because my sister is a stylist and she pretty much tells me what I should and should not use, and she does all the cutting and coloring, so it's healthy. BUT, I have just discovered TERAX Miele, (www.sephora.com)it smells rather peculiar but it's nice,just a little bit goes a long way, and my hair feels great. To Condition it, I use Organic Root Simulator: Olive Oil Conditioner, then after washing I use the same brand Olive Oil Moisturizer(www.cvs.com). Then my hair is back in business, I have moisture, shine, and my hair isn't heavy.

Does anyone know how to wash hair dye OUT of your hair? I had my hair dyed red a long time ago, it was supposed to last for 6 weeks but it ended up lasting for 6 months. It's probably because my natural color is a very pale blonde. I like my natural color, so I don't want to dye it again because it will never look excatly like like it was. Now my hair is some kind of see-through red color with platinum blonde parts...
