Goodbye Rochas

I'm in shock. I've been summing up the best FW06 collections in my head in the past few days and so far, my list consists of Balenciaga, Rochas and others yet to be decided. Rochas has one of THE top fashion designers, Olivier Theyskens as its creative director and even Anna Wintour loves him. Which is why yesterday's news came as a shock: (from telegraph.co.uk)

Proctor & Gamble, which owns Parisian fashion label, announced the closure of the house of Rochas. A statement from Parfums Rochas said: "After four years of support, Parfums Rochas has decided to cease further investment in the fashion house as it does not represent a core business for the company. Rochas fashion is a beautiful brand. However, we must make tough choices on where to focus our resources.”

(Pictures above and below are from the SS06 collection.)
“It is really very unfortunate,” said Anna Wintour. “It seems Proctor & Gamble was not the right company to capitalise on Theyskens’ design strengths and was not willing to go the extra distance to support him. If he’d been with LVMH or Gucci, it would have been a different story.

“He (Theyskens) is exceptionally talented and so brilliant at understanding that fashion success is not just beautiful ballgowns. He can do well-crafted, well-made suits and clothes that women really want to wear.”

I absolutely loved the Rochas FW06 collection (above), especially the gorgeous dresses at the end. The white dress is so angelic in an elegant way, and the black dress appears to be swirling around the model. The perfect word to describe this collection: divine.

The FW06 collection will make it to the stores as scheduled, but after that, it's goodbye.

The big question is of course, where will the CFDA 2006 International Award winner go. With Anna Wintour as his big supporter and three succcessful years of reviving Rochas under his belt, he's certainly got an excellent resume. Let's hope we see his designs again soon.

*Sigh* Now who's going to make those beautiful dresses Rochas was so brilliant at?

  2. i read about it on WWD on tuesday. i just couldnt believe it. *sob sob* i know their clothes are not so "commoner friendly" as in normal people cant really afford them but their designs are wearable and timeless. i just thought rochas wouldnt have to close down their business if they came out with an accessory line like other fashion houses. chanel/dior wouldnt have survived if it depended solely on their clothing line. i'll miss rochas very very much. its the end of an era, definitely. *more sobs*

  4. can't believe Rochas is actually closing down... That's very sad news. They have made such wonderful and amazing pieces of clothing and i bet their next collection would've been more amazing. Too bad that won't exist.

  8. I'm so sad! I heard about it yesterday, and i can't bear to think of how P&G could shut down such a famous and amazing fashion house. It's unfair, especially after Oliver's incredible FW06 collection. He's so talented. I'll be mourning the loss of this historic fashion house and it's amazing designer for a long time. Although there's no way Oliver Theyskens will be unemployed for long. He'd better not be, anyway.

  10. Hi, this is actually a response to your New York Restaurant dress code question on the Jane site (didn't have an acct and didn't feel like setting one up!). When they say "Jacket Required" they mean that only for the men in the party. In general in New York you can get away with wearing anything from ripped jeans to a ballgown to any restaurant, but if it is "jacket required" its probably a tad dressier. I would suggest just a cute summer dress for the ladies, but for the guys they should not wear jeans and should throw on a blazer. Hope that helps! Have a great trip! I miss the city so much! - former ny'er living in HK.

  15. I'm sure it will do his career no harm - look at the way Marc Jacobs went stratospheric after being fired for his Grunge look at Perry Ellis.

It's not like being fired, but it might cause a scramble for him to take over another fashion house.

  16. it's olivier, not oliver

  17. I think Theyskens, along with Ghesquiere and Stefano Pilati, is the most innovative designer of these last seasons. I am really sad about the decision to close Rochas (a great maison with a great history), but I am sure he will be able to show his genius somewhere else.

  18. I am simply horrified, this is not correct . What a talented young man! I am sure he will he will go quickly to another house. I am very happy that I do not use Crest. I will search out every product they make and will never purchase from them. Not in keeping with their product line, HA!!!!!! I am sorry that I am not able to really express on this forum my true feelings about this closure. I wish this very talented young man much continued success.

  19. I just saw the Rochas fall 2006 line at the Museam Of Fine Arts Boston yesterday, and it was one of my favorite collections. Rochas is a classy, origional brand that will take a chunk out of the fashion industry when it leaves.
