Sampling Mascaras

If you have read my recent post in the Jane blog, then you'll know that I'm desperate for a new tube of mascara. I've got this habit: after I finish a product, I usually don't buy the same product. I either buy a (magazine or Makeup Alley) -recommended product, or try out new products on the market because you never know if there are better ones out there. So when BG and I were shopping yesterday, I tried out two mascaras which are quite new.
The first mascara was one by Shiseido Maquillage. I can't remember the exact name of the mascara and the official site is in Japanese so this is just from what the saleslady told us. The mascara had one one of those flat combs and it had a waterproof formula. It was supposedly a light, volume-enhancing mascara, although when pushed further, the saleslady also claimed that it was supposed to legnthen your lashes. She quickly curled my lashes and tried some on my lashes. The result? My lashes sort of clumped together and I looked like I had half the lashes I actaully had. Plus, they looked barely legnthened and only a bit volume-ised. I removed the mascara immediately and moved on.
The second mascara was the Projectionist by Estee Lauder, which I've been meaning to try out for awhile. I had my reservations because it was not available waterproof, but the 'High Definition Volume Mascara' ad looked so tempting so I had to give it a try. The saleslady curled my lashes, put on many coats of mascara base, and then many many coats of the Projectionist. She put on so many coats of mascara that my eyes literally teared up.
The result was kind of weird. It was obviously a good mascara as it did a decent job at lengthening and adding volume (I have high standards). And like the ad said, it certainly added 'drama' to my lashes -they looked very unnatural and coated up (thanks to the saleslady.) BG thought my lashes looked weird. I was unsure about the effects and it being non-waterproof so the saleslady said I should wait for a few hours. When I got home about two hours later, a tiny bit of mascara seemed to have already smudged around the outer bottom eyeline very slightly. So I guess that's a no.
The conclusion? Since I'm such a risk averse girl and practically every mascara smudges on me, it seems like I'm destined to stick with good-old-totally-waterproof Lancome. Oh well, I might as well try out the ever popular Defincils. What is your take on waterproof/ non-waterproof mascaras? Pls recommend me a dramatic, waterproof, smudge-free mascara if you know any!

  5. I have tried every mascara available in the market, but i always come back to NIVEA mascara (Stretch & Curl) it thikins your lashes and don't stick them together. I don't use the waterproof , but it's available if u wanna try it out.

I have all types of NIVEA mascaras and they are all good, for what ever look you want(long lashes, think, curled....u name it)

  6. diorshow is a really good mascara
you can try lancome fatale if you have lots of patience
and if you want something cheap, covergirl exactlash is actually really good too!

  7. Give Imju Fiberwig a try. There are little fibers that attach to your eyelashes. The formula is kind of dry, so your lashes won't be so soft, but the dryness does help to hold your curl (just don't curl after you've put on this mascara). And like Blinc's Kiss Me mascara, it comes off with a little bit of water and pressure. Some people have had trouble with a little flaking but I haven't.

  8. I can only wear waterproof mascara so I used to wear clinique's, until I came across this great waterproof mascara at The Body Shop. You should give it a try.

  9. Dior Show Waterproof is great...give it a try

its dramatic and it wont smudge unless u have it overnight.

  10. MaxFactor makes quite a few good ones...Volume Couture and Lash Perfection are my two favorites. (Both are reviewed on my blog.) Definicils is my department store standby...love that one too!

  11. I use Stila fiber optics mascara. I don't know if it's available in waterproof, but I love it. I have short, blonde lashes and mascara has always been an issue. This mascara changed my life. It has tiny little fibers which attach to your lashes and length/volumize them. You should try it! :)

  12. Chanel's waterproof mascara is FABULOUS. I highly suggest it.

  13. i love chanel's inimitable and bobby brown's waterproof mascara. typically mascara always smudges for me, but those two will last all day without running..

  14. i dont do waterproof, but i love rimmel mascara.ive tried a few different kinds by this brand-and i loved all of them...

    ReplyDelete
  15. Ooo, lots of suggestions- I'll have to check some of them out.

Hmm, I've tried Diorshow before and loved the results, but it smudged a bit at the end of the night.

  16. Never know which mascara to get...so this is interesting read!

  17. It doesn't matter too much what mascara it is as long as you know how to put it on well.

That said, I love Clinique mascara (forget the name atm) and MAC Pro Longlash. I like it when they dry out a little bit so that you can add many coats without big wet clumps.

  18. i've always had a problem getting a mascara that definitely makes my eyelashes volumized yet able to remain curled. i've tried a gazillion of mascaras and i've decided that lancome really is the best. you can pile on as much as you want and it still wouldn't cause your eyelashes to 'uncurl'. i would suggest lancome hypnose because it's no smudge, lasts the whole day, volumizes and helps to maintain the curl :)

  19. I wear Australis colourless mascara!! Its awesome coz it makes my eyelashes super shiny, long and thick without giving me the mess.

I don't get time to check my make up often so the clear-ness is great, and it also doesn't matter if I make a mistake :P

    Love your blog btw!

  20. diorshow.

scrape the edge of the wand on the tube a little bit, then apply. it's fantastic!

  21. I second benefit bad gal lash. I've never met another mascara i love half as much. it makes my lashes full and long and bold. it's wonderful.

  22. Definitely agree with the Diorshow raves. I have short, stick-straight Asian lashes and this mascara helps volumize and hold curl, for me anyway. Some people don't like the large brush, though.

    ReplyDelete
  23. i usually wear 2 mascaras at the same time ,, sometimes even 3 ...
n i swear THIS can make ya lashes look much fabulous + hold longer !!!

maybelline volume express + clinique lash power is a perfect match !!!

actually i think mascara is no need to buy a expensive one ...
it drys out so quickly in months anyway

  24. i love covergirl's lash exact

    ReplyDelete
  25. definitely give kiss me mascara a try. Perfectly smudge-free, h20-prooof! and i feel like it's good for my lashes. =)

    ReplyDelete
  26. like other people have been saying, blinc's kiss me and imju/dejavu's fiberwig mascara are the only ones easily available that are truly waterproof. that's because it's not paint, but rather rubber that's coating the lashes. absolutely no smearing/smudging.

for drama. it's kind of a tossup. i found blinc better at volumizing, but imjju/dejavu sooo much better at length and keeping my curl all day, which is why it's my hg.

both are available at sephora, but are about half the price in japan.

(p.s. these rubbery type of mascaras are better for your lashes because they don't need makeup solvent or even soap to remove.)
    =0)

  27. well i like bourjois yes to volume no to clumps, mine is not waterproof, but it doesn't smudge alot and it just looks cool

    ReplyDelete
  28. im currently using lancome's definicils and LOVE it cuz it doesnt clump and stays on all day long. the last mascara i used was "faux lash" by katie B. cosmetics. I was scared at first because she's some random girl just makin' mascara but it actually turned out great. no clumps, stayed on all day long, waterproof, LOTS of volume. im not sure it was the mascara or the fat brush that came with it but it was good and worth a try. check her stuff out at http://www.katiebco.com/. good luck and do report back what you find =)

  29. I love my Max Factor waterproof mascara, it's cheap and looks great, at least for me. I know shiseido is a really good brand, but the mascara seamed very different.

  30. Kanebos 38' mascara is the only one I can use now. Once I got used to that it doesn't melt (but comes off in pieces once you wash your face with warm water) and therefore is impossible to smudge, "normal" mascaras always bring unpleasant suprises. "What? My eyes teared from the cold wind, so now there are grey streaks on my cheeks?" I'm sticking with the Kanebo... :)

  31. kiss me by blinc is absolutely awesome. you must at least give it a try!

  32. I get stopped on the street with questions about my mascara: Clinique High Impact. I apply one coat, let dry while finishing rest of makeup, then a bit of touch ups. Viola! Perfectly groomed, long, unclumped lashes everytime.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Try Dior backstage mascara. They have a waterproof one. I love it. It adds so much volume and length.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I wear 2 different mascaras, both from Clinique. I first apply the normal one and then a coat of the waterproof one. This way I get the best of both worlds: huge lashes+waterproof.

    It really works.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I recently changed mascara thanks to my friend's recommendation. She suggested I try YSL. I bought YSL's waterproof mascara and I am lovin' it!!!
    Give it a go.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I try almost every mascara that comes out, but always ended up going back to Diorshow. It is simply the best. A make up artist I worked with taught me this great trick. To make your lashes fuller dust them with some loose face powder before applying mascara. It works!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I do my tips in defencils and my base and second coat on my tips in dior show non water proof, people stop me and ask if I am wearing fake eyelashes. and ps waterproof mascara is bad for your lashes

    ReplyDelete
  38. Definitely DiorShow - fantastic, but Max Factor Masterpiece also works really well. I find Benefit's Bad Gal clumps my lashes very badly together, but Get Bent is not as bad, and gives great lift and curve.
I've never had any mascara smudge while I'm out, as long I'm not rubbing it or getting my face wet.

  39. i got the projectionist in a goodie bag when i visited conde nast last year (don't know why-- a meeting with an alumni at gourmet got me mascara?) and when i tried it it FREAKED me out. i have long-ish lashes to begin with and when i got it on, suddenly, everything i saw had big, black stalactites in it. crazy! i stick to just plain old maybelline great lash. plain pure and simple for $5!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I use max factor 2000 calorie.. but one of my friend's use "Mac loudlash [I think that's the name]" and omg it REALLY volumizes her eye lashes! They're HUGE.. it's like she is wearing fake lashes. Kind of look like spider legs haah.

    ReplyDelete
  41. i alternate between lancome, estee lauder, clinique and maybelleine :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. i SWEAR by lancome definicils mascara. i've tried tons (maybelline, benefit, etc). but lancome is, by far, the best of the bunch.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I gotta say i will never try anything else but L'Oréal Voluminous Volume Building Mascara. This is the most wonderful mascara and not expensive at all. You can get a naturla long look wiht just a couple strokes. Or you can get the dramatic volume boosting eyes with a couple more stokes of the brush. I get it at target for 8 bucks. not abd at all. i will never waste more trying on expensive ones when i can get better results for cheeper. Any the have it available in 4 shades and waterproff too. I loke to buy the "blackest black" color. Love it!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Fasio Hyper Curl and Bourjois. So waterproof that you need cleansing oil to remove them :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. definitely fasio! either hypercurl (which i've yet to try) or power stay curl which can only be removed with oil or fasio's point makeup remover. so waterproof i went swimming in them and they survived!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I love Maybelline Full 'n Soft, just because it doesn't make my lashes feel hard and clumpy but does the job! And I use non-waterproof, but when I've (accidentally) slept in it it still doesn't smudge!!! Plus it's so cheap!
Also Clinique High Impact is very good...

  47. Waterproof Diorshow is the best

    ReplyDelete
  48. DIORSHOW

I also love trying new mascara, and have been disappointed over and over again. I don't have the waterproof version of Diorshow, but I haven't experienced much smudging at all.

There was a previous comment about the big brush, which I absolutely LOVE, since it separates all of my lashes, coating each one gloriously.

    ReplyDelete
  49. although i haven't tried particularly many, i've always like the maybelline great lash mascara. it's simple and the small brush allows me to reach all the corners of my eye.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Personally I use Benefit Badgal lash... It lengthens and volumizes to my liking, and I have pretty high standards, too. I used to have a huge problem with it smudging, but I found out that it was because I didn't wait long enough for all of the oily things on my face (foundation, concealer, and moisturizer) to set in and dry before putting on the mascara. That'll get rid of 85% of people's smudging problems with any mascara.... I have to encourage any one who has commented here saying they use waterproof mascara (I am assuming to prevent smudging) NOT to use waterproof mascara. It is VERY bad for your eyelashes- it dries them out. It should be reserved for funerals, weddings, and incredibly bad days such as when your boyfriend breaks up with you.

    ReplyDelete
  51. hey ya,

im currently using maybelline's unstoppable black and its surprisingly pretty gd! really lengthens and a tinge of volume. smudge a little during mid day.. just a little cotton bud tip will take them out. not bad for a drugstore brand! my gfs swears by dior/lancome though! :)

  52. I was reading your post on mascara and I can totally relate. I am very picky with mascaras because I want them to look natural at the same time open up my eyes to give me a fresh 'I'm Awake' look. I was getting my make-up done at the bobby brown counter and tried her mascara 'everything mascara'. I love it! With just one dip from the tube it coats both eye lashes to my liking. I definitly recommend it!

    ReplyDelete
  53. i am very picky about my mascara too, but i swear by FRESH mascara. It is amazing, and it works so well.

Keep up the good work on your blog. i love it!

  54. I just tried Max Factor Lash Perfection Waterproof Mascara in rich black and it is the BEST I have ever used. Lengthens and separates like none I've used before and I have tried many. Now I am trying to figure out how to get it off. It is certainly waterproof:-)

  55. i have tried katie b cosmetics' faux lash mascara and it is the best mascara i have ever used!! at first i was skeptical but i gave in and bought one. it is unbelievable how good her mascara is. it is really black and gives lots of volume. her mascara is also really good for girls whose lashes go straight when they put on mascara. faux lash mascara actually holds the curls so you don't have to recurl. truly her mascara is good!! you have to try it. the link is katiebco.com.
