Graduation Dresses II

Of course my thoughts on graduation dresses could not all be expressed in just one post. I do love to overanalyze things and this is a topic that has occupied my thoughts for quite some time now (in between, 'Why oh why, is paper writing so hard? It should've gotten easier after four years...'). So here are some more of my thoughts:
Usually the saying goes, 'when all else fails, turn to the LBD.' I think graduation is the exception, because it would just be so...black! But if you must, I think these black dresses with some prints and patterns would be a great option to offset the blackness (left: Donna Ricco, right: Cynthia Steffe). I actually quite like the Cynthia Steffe. The cutting is simple and the pattern is subtle but interesting.
In the case for graduation, I think the saying should be, 'when all else fails, turn to the white dress.' Here we have a very classic white dress from Theory (left). Maybe you can add personality to it with some accessories? The other day, I saw graduation pictures of people with pearl necklaces and matching earrings, and it looked very elegant. For a bit more fun, this dress from Carmen Marc Valvo (right) is cute.
Of course, all else has not failed yet. You might want to go to the other extreme and go for bright florals. That would definitely brighten up the gown. The thing about graduation dresses, is that they should be daytime, but not too casual, maintaining a bit of modesty and decorum.
That is a hard line to balance. You'd notice that I haven't picked anything too revealing nor too casual so far. The trick for floral dresses is to choose one with a clean cutting so it won't look too much.
You can also take a book from my page (I think I've decided on wearing my purple Marc by MJ dress from the last post) and go for a dress with a simple cutting but a bold color. I LOVE the simple yet elegant cutting of the blue Burberry dress (left), even though this blue is not my best color. My best color is of course, purple, like this purple on the Rory Beca dress (right).
I know I said nothing too low cut, but if you can carry it off, I LOVE this purple Nanette Lepore dress (left). The details are just so feminine and PRETTY. On the opposite end, there is this bolder block dress (right), from Theory. Whichever one suits your personality better.
Another great summer color (especially for SS08 as it is THE color) to think about is yellow. It is summery, refreshing, not too girly nor too dark and just super fun. There is this simple one from Vince (left). But personally I ADORE this yellow block dress from T Tahari (right). My friend got this (and I hope she keeps it!). The cutting is simple and elegant, and the block colors highlight the cutting of the dress, making it even more flattering for the wearer. Come to think of it, I want a yellow dress like this too!

  3. The Theory colour block is so crisp looking, and I love the two you picked from Burberry and Rory Beca! The best thing about these is that you'll be able to wear all through the summer, and they would look great with some black tights in the fall. Nice choices!

  5. I LOVE the dress that is next to the white Theory dress. The white one with the black pattern creeping up the skirt and the black belt. It says adult but playful and not bridesmaid.

  6. Graduation means sitting for a very long time in an uncomfortable chair, perhaps on a soggy lawn, in the hot sun or rain, unless yours is indoors, but you still need to plan for comfort. There is a photographer to snap your picture during the ceremony so you need to think about what the neckline will look like. No tshirts guys!

  7. If it's allowed, consider that fashion essential, a small fanny pack, or some type of small bag to wear under your gown to hold your camera, phone, gloss, and snacks, or whatever else you might need. A college graduation I attended recently lasted four hours!

  11. I definitely think that you can never go wrong with a white dress. Our highschool's graduation actually required all the girls to wear white dresses and all the boys to be in blazers. J.Crew has a lovely selection of cleancut but summery white dresses.

  12. We've been told to wear something with buttons for graduation so that they can attach the hood, so I was just going to go with a shirt, so with a dress would the hood then sit funnily over the gown?!

  13. anon 4:23--congrats! yes we found out the hood doesnt sit right unless it is attached in front, my daughter attached hers to the zipper pull on her gown because she didnt have any buttons to attach it to. the masters' hood was not really a hood but a scarf or stole that covers the neck in front and drapes over the shoulders and down the back of the gown. it would pull up across the neck too high if not attached in front. hope this helps...

  16. Just a thought, floral motif is coming back isnt it? Especially in summer dresses and not only in western countries, but asian countries as well. When was the last time it was huge?

  17. I love the pink floral dress! I too, have been told to wear a shirt with buttons so that I can attach the hood to it, but I am definitely going to wear a pretty dress and bring some pins instead tee-hee! Can't wait!!

So cute. I like the idea of brighter colors or white over black/grey for a graduation. It's supposed to be a cebration! I also like that purple/pinkish dress.

  26. I also love the purple Nanette Lepore dress! Great for an outdoor event this summer, when lace and bright colors are so in!

  31. Graduation dresses can be tricky. I know I searched high and low to find my perfect dress for graduation a few years ago. I agree that a dress with a simple cutting but a bold color is perfect.

I found a few simple, but still elegant dresses on shopgoldyn.com. I especially like the ADAM tuxedo dress in white.

  33. From a guys perspective I like the yellow dress towards the bottom.

I myself work in the silk tie business and yellow is considered a warm and cheerful color. In men's fashion, in particular neckties, this color is reserved for the spring. It matches well with other light colors such as tea greens, most light blues, and coral red.
