The Hat For Summer 08

Hats are all the rage this summer. More specifically, straw hats are all the rage. The aim to look chilled-out-rock chic or festival chic. The nice thing about this S/S08 trend is that on the runway, any style of straw hats will do, whether the hat is the smaller fedora style, or larger floppy style. And most importantly, hats are so useful for the summer days out. Actually on any given day, I'd prefer not to have to wear a hat (-hat hair!) but since I've been travelling a bit, I really wanted something to protect my skin from the sun. Thus my sudden interest in the hat trend.
The most practical hat for shading my face from the sun would be one of these huge floppy hats. And I figure I would feel less idiotic wearing one this summer since it was on the runway and hey, even Blair wore it in Gossip Girl (-bad logic, I know.) But since it's not really possible for me to fit such a large, irregular shape into my suitcase, I decided against it.

The shape I wanted was one like the one Rachel Bilson was wearing. It looks so cool on her!

It looks a lot like this fedora from Urban Outfitters. Unfortunately, it seems to be only available in the US.

I tried on a similar one to the one Kristen Dunst is wearing in the photo from Top Shop, butI thought it looked way too much like a cowboy hat. I wanted to look festival chic, not like I thought Halloween had come early. Plus the sides were so short it didn't seem like it would actually shade my face from the sun.

So I ended up settling for this hat -it's part practical and part festival chic. And it fits perfectly into my suitcase. I've been really loving it on my holidays!

I also debated between straw colour and black. I thought black was even more versatile than straw colour. But in the end, I decided to get into the spirit of travelling and the current trend and opted for a straw-coloured one. (The straw-coloured hats must have been much more popular than the black ones because the Top Shop I went to only had one straw-coloured hat left, whereas there were still many black ones.)

Anyone else been having fun with this trend this summer?

  1. I'm liking the straw headgear! I have to confess i've been hankering after a Panama hat for ages now!

I've started wrapping a different ribbon each day around my own battered straw hat.

  3. interesting post about the shopping and decision process and i like what you chose. i think floppy hats look better at the beach and the fedora is so overdone. your classic hat would look great with shorts, a sundress, or even something more formal. i love hats but i have never worn them much but i would try this. thanks for the "tip" ;-)

  8. I like straw hats for the beach, but have hesitated because I don't know how I would pack one.

Why does the girl in the top photo have a mustache?

  9. I saw a really cool story when I was traveling. It seems there are these two women in Tucson who are creating some really cool jewelry out of old airplanes. The are dogtags like the ones worn by our soldiers. I bought two. They look really cool and the proceeds they raise go to a group that provides housing for families of troops so they can be with their loved one while he or she undergoes treatment for their injuries suffered in the war. Check out their blog at http:www.delpoypeace.blogspot.com or their website at www.deploypeace.com.

  11. i was kind of tinkering with it, but it's official - i MUST have one now. i'm gonna give both types (floppy and fedora) a chance and see which suits me better :} thanks for the inspiration!

  12. I searched for a hat. the fedora to be exact and each one I tried on made me look like I had taken a little boy's hat and put it on.

I am 5 10 and I guess all the hat they make are for petites

I opted out of the hats since they really just do not fit me.

I guess my head is to big.

  13. i'm not much of a hat person either. in fact, probably the only one i've ever owned was a cap with cartoon characters on it back in second grade or something.

  17. I love the hats, but I wish they would make more sizes. I'm very tall and have a large head, so hats tend to be too small so I miss out on the cute summer hats.

  24. READ ME WOMEN OF THE WORLD

HADLEY FREEMAN HAD THIS TO SAY ON THE MATTER OF HATS (she is the demi-god[des] of how to wear 'it' well)

Is it ever acceptable for a woman
    to wear a hat?
    Caroline Church, by email

No. Either you go down the traditional flower-pot route and end up resembling Hyacinth Bucket. Or you try to go all "jaunty" and "ironic", two states of being that are only mildly more annoying than the ho-ho-ho quotation marks in which they are sandwiched.

And let's discuss this latter peril for a moment, shall we?

Why oh why oh why (etc, etc) do women think that by wearing a hat they look kooky and individualistic - and yes, Sienna and Agyness, I am addressing this question to you (girls, call me on my usual number, we need to talk) - when, in fact, they look like what they are: Kate Moss 2004 wannabes and/or teenage Italian exchange students from 1989.

There is nothing wrong with Italian exchange students, of course. They are welcome to come over here and stand in a queue in front of Madame Tussauds all they like. But that doesn't mean I approved two decades ago of their headwear, or the way it has somehow inveigled itself into the mainstream-that-thinks-it-is-not-mainstream but actually-really-cutting-edge-but-is-totally-utterly-not.

OR, IN MY ADVICE, WEAR A CLOCHE HAT . . . FAR, FAR MORE COOL

  25. FOUND!!!!

I was looking for a new summer hat and came across a great online store, swell.com, that has a huge selection of straw fedoras and other trendy summer hats. If you were looking for similar styles to some of these they probably have what you want! My favorite is the Brixton Corsair since I have a little head and it's super feminine for a fedora.

  26. i'm probably in the vast minority here, but i don't see what's all that wrong with trucker caps still...as far as shielding you from the sun and keeping you cool, they're still the best to me. there are a couple of sites that have pretty neat ones...this one for example:

  27. Adding Some Color To Your Life
There are some women out there who only own two different colored handbags: one black and

the other white or beige. This is, in many ways, very sad! Black and any white tone are

great colors for bags, but what about adding a bit more brightness into your life? Exact

replica designer handbags can help you to do that. Many of the designer handbags that are

created have quite a bit of color to them, and every time the popular color of the season

changes, the color of the most popular handbags around changes too, giving you tons of

    variety to work with.
The Prada New Look Hobo Nappa Leather Striped Blue and Gold is a great bag to buy if you’re

looking for some color that isn’t too flashy or trashy. This imitation Prada bag has

beautiful blue and gold leather pulled together with detailed stitching, brass hardware with

the Prada logo, and a completely adjustable strap, making it easy to turn it from a shoulder

bag to a tote in the blink of an eye. Color is a wonderful thing, so this spring, add some

    to your life!.http://www.ereplicasupplier.com/
