Beware of Acid Washed Jeans

This weekend, we went to Nordstroms to return my friend's AG Legend Jeans. She returned it not because she'd changed her mind or anything (she's had it for a few months now), but because it RIPPED! Yes, you read correctly, her $130+ jeans RIPPED when she was sitting down, and trust me, it's NOT because she didn't fit into it.

And the most amazing thing was, she was not the only one to have her $100+ pair of gorgeous jeans rip. The lady in front of us at the counter had the same problem with her newly bought and hadn't even washed Rock and Republic Jeans!

Clearly the ripping of the expensive jeans is not an uncommon phenomena. You'd think a pair of $100+ would not to rip at any time-imagine the potential embarassing moments! As it turns out, the lady at the counter explained to us that it ripped because of the huge amount of acid they'd used to create the acid washed effects on the jeans, which had weakened the material. My faith in $100+ jeans just dropped. Incidently, Nordstrom has excellent service, as they returned the money of my friend's jeans even though she'd already lost the receipt and the tags.

  1. I definately didn't know about how delicate those jeans are. And totally love the pocket of Rock & Republis jeans!

  2. Ugh... the horrors of shoddy fabric.

    That's why I stick with A.P.C.

  3. I wear my jeans to death, but I've never had a pair rip.
Glad she got her $ back.
You can't beat a great pair of jeans. I have a couple of favorites that I practically live in.

  4. The R&R are indeed fab.

I had similar problems with Seven jeans, including a shoddy zipper.

  6. so with jeans i guess you don't get what you pay for...that is a good point, jamie, that even old jeans are hard to rip, and these were brand new!

that's nice to know that nordstrom is so nice about returns--to drive to the store, buy something, take it home, and then have to drive back because something is wrong with it, and then be treated like dirt is not my idea of a good time--the stores should really compensate us for our time and expenses when they sell shoddy merchandise, but instead they just give us a hard time and make it seem like they are doing us a favor for all our trouble.../end rant

  7. I've had several pairs of expensive (over 100) jeans, and yet my favorite pair remains $11 jeans I got on clearance at Target. They're very simple, dark washed, longer bootcuts, and don't look like Target jeans at all. AND they hold up, amazingly well.

  8. I agree with anonymous that if they're flattering and stylish and you can get them for next to nothing that's the way to go. But if you don't have THEE pocket insignia on many a college campus, you are not considered part of the in crowd. Some things never change....

  9. I feel her pain. I had a pair of $165 Paper, Denim, & Cloth jeans rip in two places!! But, I loved the fit and look so much (and they were the last pair) I just had the dept store fix one of the rips and kept the other tear in the jeans, because it kind of looked intentional.

  10. Hey there,

found your blog after typing in "how do I wash diesel jeans" in google -- and although I figured that out, I was wondering if anyone knew what jeans had a "w" across both pockets, I saw a pair the other day and they were really cool looking --

    thanks!

  11. Hey, my name is Matt. I recently bought a pair of 100 dollar Paper Denim jeans in another state that I'm not going back to. It was at an Urban Outfitters. Thanfully, that store is in my city. I don't have the receipt anymore, but I do have the bag and tags. The jeans ripped in two places on the same knee, what should I do?

e-mailing me at judysarabbit@yahoo.com would be the best thing possible.

  12. I had a pair of AG Jeans that I just bought rip on me too at the knee! They were only 1 month old and a dark wash - not lightened by acid - even more surprising. I contact AG and they refused to do anything about it! I bought my pair of jeans on vacation too, on the opposite side of the coast. Their reponse to me was "We are the manufacturer and do not deal with consumer complaints". Infuriating!

  13. IT'S TRUE IT'S TRUE!
It has now happened to me twice!
In Miami I purchased a pair of these very Rock & Republics and tried them on at the store no problem. Went back to the hotel and put them on for a party. Did a squat and BOOM! Busted the butt right out of them! Funny but not really...
Months later found the same pair at Marshalls on sale (go figure!) and thought I'd try again. Got them a little looser this time. Came home. Squat test. SAME RESULT!

    I give up....

  16. I had a pair of Big Star jeans (like $70) that were almost 3 years old that ripped at the top of my inner thigh earlier this year. The jeans were so comfortable but I figured since they were on the cheap side, I got what I paid for.

But then a pair of James Cured jeans ($220) that were only 8 months old ripped in the same exact place! I've been wanting to go back to the store to see if they would at least give me a discount on another pair, but I'm kind of embarassed about it. I don't understand why it's happening all of a sudden.

The only reason I pay that much for jeans is because I'm expecting great quality and fit. Now I'm going to be nervous buying pairs in the future.

  18. I had the same EXACT problem with my 7 for all mankind jeans. They got really thin on the ass area. And they weren't acid washed. What's the deal? You spent enough money on them, you think you'd be getting your moneys worth?

  19. wow 3 1/2 years and stii getting comments, excellent blog post. Now my 2 cents. I am on my way to the 7 for all man kind store in Bellevue WA. The very first time I wore my new pair of $200 jeans the knee spilt all the way across! So am on my way to return them. Usually 7's have always treated me pretty well. Rocks are pretty solid except for the loss of one of the buttons. If you want absolute quality I highly recomend Versace Jeans! For a year and a half my pair if solid black Versace's still look as good as they were when they were new. At $500 a pair I would expect nothing less. Granted these jeans hardly see the light of day. After I do battle with the 7 store I will repost to let you know what happens........audie l
