On search for the perfect lip balm

I know winter is almost over, but I still haven't found my perfect lip balm -and certainly not from the lack of trying! I have tried more than five lip balms (which is def more than what my lips need,) but I'm still not satisfied with any of them. Although I do admit I got most of my lip balms for free, one way or another, and only one lip balm was actually purchased personally.

Vaseline Lip Therapy, Cherry - This is the one I've been using ever since I bought it in Japan last August. It certainly does do all that lip protecting thing it's supposed to. My only complaint is that it's got an annoying texture, like the balm on the upper and lower lip stick together. Oh and while lip balms don't necessarily need to be shiny, if they're going to act like lip gloss (annoyingly sticky that is,) then it should at least look good.

Biotherm Moisturizing Balm Protective Lip Care -I think Biotherm has changed the package since I got mine because mine doesn't look like this photo (which is the only lip balm that can be currently found on the Biotherm website.) The one I have is a white tube. The 'lip balm' inside is sort of like a white cream, which is super annoying because after application, it forms a white layer on your lips! AND it didn't even feel moisturising. Thank goodness my dad got this for free from the plane!

Ren Skincare Acacia Blossom Lip Honey -Another freebie from the plane, this time from my mum. This so-called lip balm is like a chunk of hard wax. I literally have to use my nails to scrape some 'balm' from the jar onto my lips and spread it out. After a long bit of heating, the chunk of 'Lip Honey' does melt -and when it does, it's fantastic -but when it cools down afterwards, it's hard and annoying to use again.

Body Shop Born Lippy Lip Balm -My friend gave this to me as a present, (yes I am extremely cheap and hardly ever buy myself lip balm.) When I was younger I loved the smell. But now that I'm older, the smell really irritates me because it makes the water in my water bottle taste funny.

Eve Lom Kiss Mix -I don't actually own this, but a facial lady once put it on me at the end of my Eve Lom facial (which was totally useless btw.) Eve Lom Kiss Mix is mega shiny, and it gives the lips a lovely tingly feeling. I haven't used it enough to comment on how lip-protecting it is, but at 12.5 pounds per jar, I probably won't be running to buy it!

So if there is a lip balm that you think is uber fantastic, let me know please!!

i'm using l'occitane's shea butter. i bought it in the 8ml traveller's size on the plane. its really useful because you can use it as a lip balm and as a moisturiser on really dry skin.

neutrogena makes one that's pretty amazing. it feels good, goes on pretty clear, and adds a tad of shine. blistex's "silk and shine" is good too.

I used to use Kiehl's lip balm # 1 as it does a good job of moisturizing your lips. Too bad it has a horrendous taste. Then I found C.O. Bigelow's Mentha Lip Shine and I LOVE this product. It's mint-infused, ultra shiny, really moisturizing, and has a sweet taste to it!

Burt's Bees Beeswax Lipbalm. I swear by that stuff. I bought mine at Borders (I know...it's weird to find a lip balm at a bookstore). I think they also have it in Trader Joe's. You can also buy it online at www.burtsbees.com.

I've tried so many over the years but now I only use Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream for lips. I have about 5 tubes stashed in various places so I'm never without!! You can get it with tints as well, but i haven't tried those yet...

cruelandpretty: I use the Neutrogrena lip moisturizer too! It does the job, isn't sticky, has a bit of a clear shine AND its affordable-which is a very good thing since I tend to lose them a lot. Oh and it has SPF as well. I highly recommend it.

i use blistex... but the kind that comes in a little jar.. it's not all that pretty but it makes your lips tingle and i swear it makes my lips plump.. but that could just be in my head... however it's quite awesome for chapped lip...

I've been using Carmex for more than a decade (wow, that makes me sound old). That makes me think I'm addicted. But on the upside, it works well as a lasting moisturizer without being irritatingly sticky or wet, plus it's got SPF 15 in it. And it's only like US$1 a tube (I buy it in an twist applicator form that works like a lipstick--very easy).

Over the years i have tried every (EVERY!) damn lip balm I could get my lips to smooch... After years of hands on (or lips on!) research I am 100% convinced that beeswax is the key ingredient- anything with beeswax will make your lips silky smooth for hours... "Labello: Milk and Honey" is my current favourite- I have to get it sent over from Europe as they don't sell it in Australia BUT its sooo worth it!

Victoria's Secret Balmy Nights is good. It leaves a just licked your lips shine, not an overly shiny shine. I prefer not too shiny. Also, I find with some lip balms that after a few minutes/hours you get "white stuff" on the inner part of your lips, visible when you open your mouth. It is SO annoying, but I don't get that with Balmy Nights. So that is what I recommend. Good luck getting it though, I'm in Canada and we don't have Victoria's Secret and they don't sell it online or through the catalogue, so I have to request it when someone visits the States, and it is almost always sold out. Boo.

rosebud salve, you can use it for nearly anything! it leaves a pretty shine on your lips (short of juicy tube-shine, though) and it's tinted pink. only downside is that the texture isn't great... you supposed to be able to use it for dry skin, but makes your skin a little gooey-ish. DEF worth buying, though, for only $5.50 at sephora.

I have to agree with the others: Smith's Rosebud Salve works wonders! I find that is also mouisturizes my dry patches when i have an allergic reaction to new make-up, and it also helps calm those deeeeeep zits. one thing that may piss you off is the smell, which is the "old lady" kind of roses. but i love anything old-ladyish, so it's a plus for me.

Burts Bee's is what I use. I like it because it doesnt leave too much of a shine when I dont want it, and I can easily apply other lip gloss over it.

laura mercier's lip balm ($20) is fantastic: very smooth, long lasting, slightly visible bc it's a definite shine, but definitely not sticky in any way.

Clinque has this
"Colour Surge Butter Shine Lipstick" it's not really a lib BALM as you can see, but it does do wonders for my lips! Sometime in January I had a lip crisis (my lips were cracked beyond belief <-- no amount of water or balm could sooth them?!) and the lady at the counter recommended this lipstick for my winter formal, by the evening my lips were better than they had been in weeks! I like this lipstick because it goes on really smooth, it has the shine of a gloss (but isnt sticky at all!), and of course it mends my damaged lips. It's about $18 Canadian a tube, but IMO, definitely worth it as it's not only a balm, a gloss, but gives a "my lips but better" tinge of colour. :)

hello! it's humid where i'm from, but i do get dry lips. when i do, i use mentholatum's LipIce Grape flavour, which is colourless and not oily. tastes great too! slightly minty and grape-ish. rather cheap too =) if you get really desperate though, why not try making one yourself? there're recipes, one fantastic one at notmartha.org that might be helpful so you can tweak it to your taste.

I'm convinced that anything that makes your lips tingle is actually an irritant to your skin. But if your lips tolerate it and you like it, good for you.

Me? I vouch for the super moisturizing and protecting abilities of Kiehl's and the laura mercier that others posted about. And also Dr Hauschka. My husband used to carry the bert's bee's constantly and then tried my Dr Hauschka and then never went back.

I have chronically chapped lips and have also tried almost every brand. C&C Bigelow is definitely my lip balm of choice, it comes in a basic moisturizing formula, a mint one, and also a wonderful exfoliating lip scrub that is much cheaper and more effective than the Benefit lip exfoliator/balm set. I would recommend all three since they work well, have pleasant scents and are only about $5 a pop in the states.

Blistex Herbal Answer!!!! It has a nice, light citrus-y fragrance and the perfect texture--not too sticky, not too hard, not too liquidy so it doesn't slide off. it glides smoothly on your lips (it's a stick--I prefer that to finger application) and feels so comforting. It has SPF 15 and is full of nourishing stuff--aloe, chamomile, jojoba, avocado, shea butter. Plus, it's so cheap I buy it in multiples and stick it all over my apartment and in various bags so my lips need never be uncomfortable!

Ooo yay, lots of suggestions.

The thing is, even when I'm in Hong Kong, (which is humid most of the time) I still need lip balm because air conditioning indoors makes my lips dry!

I was actually tihnking of trying the Kiehl's tinted lip balm, but my friend has it and she seems to have to reapply every hour!

a) burt's bees
b) blistex
or
c) my new favourite, the givenchy baby lips - the compact comes with a mirror, lip scrub, lip balm and two cute lip glosses not to mention lip brushes all in a tiny little box
(just don't take it clubbing cos you probably WILL lose it... and it's a bit expensive at 23pounds in debenhams)

I LOVE Prada's Shielding Balm SPF 15/Lip/Tint, they have them untinted, or lightly tinted. I love the chocolate tint (#5).

They're a little expensive, but I love them so much, I give them out as gifts to my girl friends.

I love their cute little package, and it has a soft scent that I LOVE! the texture is perfect, they're not sticky.

I'm a huge fan of L'Occitane's 100% shea butter. It comes in a little tin 0.26oz and like you I got it free on a flight courtsey of my dad. It is however £8 a tin in shops but it does last long. Otherwise nivea makes good value lip balm tubes.

Burt's Bees for sure, but I also love the Aveeno Lip Enhancer. It's not really a lip balm, but it keeps the lips shiny if you apply a lot and also intensely moisturized. Good luck!

I haven't been without Kiehl's #1 lip balm for 3 years now. I disagree with the earlier comment that it tastes weird (I've never noticed anyhow)... it's amazing: moisturing, clean, and makes your lips super-shiny in a pouty, sexy, "I'm not trying too hard" kind of way. It also comes in a convenient small pot making it perf for girls on the go-

The makers of the Rosebud Salve also make Rosebud Strawberry Lip Balm. I swear by this stuff. I've tried many a balm, and this is killer. I have like six of these stashed around my home, car, makeup bag, and office. Sephora usually has it in stock, and it's on their website.

I am also a huge fan of Burt's Bees, but I prefer the Lip Shimmer. It's a longer skinny tube. I like the color 'champagne'. I tried the one in the fat tube, chapstick size. However, I didn't realize when you put a bunch on.. it makes your lips look incredibly white. Doh!! But the Champagne Lip Shimmer rocks, I have at least 5 of them in my purse at all times. A few in my desk, my car and other places. It's an addiction.

hmm...I've got the REN lip honey and even through i don't have your problem of it being too hard, i don't find it "sinking in" too well...

i used to use kiehs #1, which feels fantastic on, but i know what you mean about the weird taste. the tinted ones are not so good, not as moisturising and does require lots of re-applications.

It's funny, but i find a lot of good quality lip glosses to be more moisturising for my lips, and plus they look better, so find one that's not too sticky and stick with that.

a good in between is Philosophy's Kiss Me Lip Balm. the smell is wonderful and it feels pretty damn great too

This is very important for a woman who want to be sexy. So i always recomend to
