Not So Glamorous

Just in case any one of you thought that these cheap plastic check Vuitton bags seen on their SS07 catwalk were cool. . . .

. . .and then got it into your head from this spread in the recent Teen Vogue that it was a great bag for this season, I did some first hand research while I was home for spring break. I'd like to point out that while they make it look really stylish and cool on the catwalk and in the photoshoots, the actual people who uses these bags are not so glamorous.
In fact, these bags are commonly used by street vendors as storage and for garbage disposal.

Seriously, I don't know where they get their ideas from.

you JUST realized that? they're probably the same things, just with the logo on them!

why would anyone buy one...

it was created to mock the street vendors that sold the LV fakes. it doesn't seem that much like a mockery to me because now its going to be really easy to make counterfeits.

i thought that people used those bags on canal street to hide their newly bought fake designer bags, so lv was making fun of the whole replica issue. haha. but i'm probably wrong.

I found it very annoying to see the "red-white-blue" bag on runway last year and one of my art professor uses it. I thought of bringing serval "RWB" bags from HK which is like US$1 and sell it for 10 bucks.
there was a blog from HK teaches people how to fake print the logo on the RWB.

Which goes to show...high fashion does not always mean high style, they're awful.

haha and that teenvogue photoshoot was done in hk. they could have done a better job of it in my opinion... it looked really poor.

Think I've seen those plastic bags in Chinatown or asian countries a lot. How much are people paying for the Vuitton bag? Unbelievable!

Wonder how much grocery bags can sell for if it's with Vuitton logo?!?! :-)

The bags (original, non-LV ones) are so useful. I used them to move everything out of my old dorm room to my flat.

The LV bags are NOT plastic, they are woven leather. When I first saw them, I didn't like them but the more I think about them... They are so surreal, that they become art to me. It's like a Duchamps installation.

Haha, this is such funny post, . But I actually like the bags, I think they're cool... even if the people not wearing them are that glamourous. :)

i like them. there shouldn't be a limit to what is stylish and what isn't simply based on who uses them. inspiration comes from all places. i didn't know it was done tongue in cheek tho. i just like them.

This will make it insanely easy to create knockoffs... maybe they should've hole punched them with 24 karat gold washers for the handles, so you could at least have some chance of telling the fakes from the real ones. I'm still waiting for the paper bag version that disintegrates in the rain, like a supermarket shopping bag.

this reminds me of the 'i love lucy' episode where lucy and ethel wear burlap sacks as dresses because a fashion designer made it for them. he he

those bags are so lame. They're worth like cents to be made and designers are going to charge some ridiculous price

Do you actually know anything about fashion, other than what you've read in magazines or seen on TV? When I studied fashion in London 6 years ago, we had to bring our portfolios, our mock-up garments, fabric samples, sheers, pattern masters etc... to the studios and home again every day. The easiest way to carry all this was and still is in a suitcase on wheels (lazy, annoying and hard to get up the stairs), or in a big, cheep, checked bag from the local market. With classic stylish clothes and high heals, it gave the bags a total new look. That is what fashion is about. Reinventing something. And it is exactly those people I studied with and others who were studying and carrying the same things all over Europe who are now the designers coming up with the trends that you comment on. And if you had acctually seen one of the Louis Vuitton bags, you would be aware that they are incredibly well made. They are not plastic. They are woven leather. Each one is a work of art. To weave leather that fine is near to impossible and that is why they come with the price tag and that is why they are "cool".

this is yet another terribly naive and idiotic post.

fashion has been taking inspiration from all walks of life for ages. who wore docs before they were cool?: postmen. and what about dickies? these were actual utility wear before they came out with a fashion line.

my god. i'm not even in fashion school and i know this stuff.

i can't believe you write for jane.

I disagree with you. A central idea of fashion is recreating images by disassociating them from their original use. So, it's pretty irrelevant who these bags were originally used by and their conceived level of "glamour". Now- this is not to say that these bags are “good”…because I don’t really think they are all that great. The size is particularly inconvenient and the logo looks stupid...my fundamental problem here is your closed-minded pseudo-“fashionista” attitude.

i think it's quite genius to take something mundane and ordinary and turn it into fashion...
i also find your elitist, shallow statements regarding the street vendors quite disturbing and i believe you owe them an apology for your disparaging remarks. ["the actual people who uses these bags are not so glamorous"]

Come on guys - everyone's entitled to an opinion...there's no need to have a go a someone for saying what they think - isn't that the whole point of a blog? To share what you believe?
I think the bags are funny in the sense that I am continually amazed by what the designers can make trendy! Who would've thought that those bags would EVER make the catwalk!

I was thinking THAT was EXACTLY where they got the inspirations from: since they are sorta like enemies (the fakes seller's favorite storage bags, LOL), why don't the high-ends decide to "cheapen up" a bit, play a joke, and make something close to that?? *How do you fake for this time now, suckers???? LOL*
