Fancy Hair Accessories
I used to wonder why accessories stores would sell these fancy hair accessories as if they were popular hair accessories because I had imagined that they were only suitable for fancy daytime events, like for a wedding in a garden or an old-fashioned Sunday brunch, which I supposed not many people attended these days (esp young people.)
But ever since Gossip Girl, I have started seeing hairbands and other similar hair accessories in a different light. (OK, so the huge red bow with Blair's school uniform is a bit over the top, but the others are usually cute.)
So when I went into Accessorize (the UK version of a much better Claire's) last week, as soon as I saw those fancy hair stuff, I rushed over. The first one I held this red rolled sinemay one against my hair. I LOVED it! It was unexpectedly pretty and just so different from what I usually see on myself. Believe me, I've always thought these things were fussy and old-fashioned but I just loved the way the material formed pretty loops on my head.
So I went back to check the hair accessories on Gossip Girl and apparently my preconception that these hair accessories were for brunches weren't completely off -Blair wore one to the grand brunch hosted by Chuck's dad in Episode 102. The one Blair is wearing is so pretty! It's a simple, classic design without being boring.
Here's a similar one to the one Blair is wearing. It's the black version of the red one I tried on. I didn't think the black one looked that great on me because my hair is black -the red one totally stood out more.
Maybe it's the pokka dots, but this one definitely gives off a more dressed-up vibe. It really looks like the ones one would wear to a garden wedding, (where older ladies would wear those fancy hats! Wait, or is it at funerals?)
I couldn't resist including this pink feathers with beads accessory -it's so girly in a non-cutsy way.
This silver sequin and feather accessory looks young and trendy. Perhaps one can even wear it on a fun night out (complete with a 20's styled outfit)?
So yes, maybe I have been brainwashed by Gossip Girl, but if I had a themed party to go to, I would totally try one of these out! Happy Easter holidays people!Image Credits: http://www.youknowyouloveme.org/, http://www.accessorize.co.uk/

hi, love your blog, i've linked you xxx
i don't know so much about the accessories you posted. but i personally loveeeeeeeeee headbands with bows on them. i think though it's because i'm obsessed with dressing like blair! can't wait for the show to start up again!
Lovely..."trés féminin"...
I love Gossip Girl's fashion. Those hair accessories are amazing, though I'm still kind of doubting their everyday wearability!
It's important to add a little glamour to a gal's daily routine. They are just perfect to jazz up a gal's look. I would love to wear one of those hair pieces for Sunday Brunch at the Ritz.
I adore this post, I adore Blair!
I have worn ribbons and fancy hairbands recently to emulate Blair's fashion...shes's awesome!
I agree. I love Blair's hair accessories. I can't wait until Gossip Girl comes back on the air in April! =)
I loved Accessorize! Unfortunately they shutdown the store in my city so I'd have to go to another state to get anything from there now. :(
They do have some great stuff though, and I love the hair pieces, would make any outfit even more stylish!
I desperately wish I could find a store like that in Auckland, NZ! I have recently become obsessed with hair accessories since I cut my hair up to my shoulders, but it is incredibly difficult to find pretty, good quality headbands in this city without having to go gallivanting off to the edges of nowhere.
When I find some headbands they're either very cheaply made and could crack after one wear, or they're very expensive. Those fascinators you pictured - usually worn to horse races, by the way - are plentiful in Smith & Caughey's (a flashy department store in Auckland) but waaaay beyond my budget. Therefore, I am reduced to constantly reusing the same 2 headbands I have at the moment, making me very sad.
PS: I LOVE Blair's red bow headband! It looks fantastic against her dark hair and livens up her uniform.
as mint says, the hair accessories you featured are actually called fascinators and are typically worn to the races. notice that blair (from GG) wears much more toned down headbands and ribbons and not fascinators with all sorts of feathers in them.frankly, id think that anyone wearing any of those during the bright of day is a tad thick. much as i love this blog, i think your take on fascinators is hopelessly wrong this time round, harrods girl.
also, fascinators are not necessarily expensive. one can easily make one's own. last year for the melbourne races, friends and i made our own fascinators which cost us a fraction of the normal retail price and were individually styled to suit each of our dresses. that said, races fashions are one of the most exciting i reckon..think the ascot (british high society fashion) or any of the melbourne races (from derby day to the caufield cup and the melbourne cup itself) as an alternative fashion avenue.
Wonderful stuff. I was wondering if you might do a male segment. I started a blog recently and want to do a segment on the topic every once in a while. My blog is: www.2kungfu4u.blogspot.com if you want to check it out.
Gossip girl has just started here in Finland, this week they showed the first episode. The hair accesories have looked flirty to me a long time, but I have been too scared to even try one on. I'd be happy to see those on the streets.

oooo when do we get to see pictures with you wearing it? it's so cute!
i love accessorize but i wish they would cut down on the shitty bags and focus on big juicy coctail rings. their hair accessories are good but they're often overpriced for things with so low quality..
Hmm I think there's an Accessorize chain here in Australia - how strange..?
I love, love, love Blair's red headband in the first pic! It goes so well with her uniform even though they're completely different colours.

xx
u make me like hair accesories.
So lovely ^^
i like pink feather the most :)
so cute >_<
but i dont think i can wear it everyday in here...
Thanks for the clarification on Accessorize. The Claire's isn't a bad accessory store but I think it's targeting a younger age group. There is an "Accessory Store" at the mall that's a little bit more of an upgrade, though.
The whole hair accessory thing is a great way to show off individual style because not everyone is doing it.
HELP!
I fell in love with Blair's total outfit in this picture.. but specifically, the headband! Who is it by and where can I get it!?
if anyone knows the dress, that would be amazing too!

I think I'm in love with fascinators. I'm seriously thinking of how to get out of work early to go and look at them.
i seriously noticed the same exact thing when i was watching gossip girl yesterday. Blair always wears headbands. They're really cute i love them.
Harrods Girl, are girls in the UK actually wearing these on the street yet? I love them on Blair but haven't seen them in real life...here in the States the trend is pointing more towards hippie-ish bird feather bands --> http://www.amaterialworld.net/2008/03/you-know-those-feathered-hairclips-i.html
(sorry, I shouldn't be self-promoting, but I just wanted to link to the photos of the feathery things...)
shoot, I think the link is messy. anyway, it's the March 18 blog post.
Actually I don't wear accesories, but when i see something like this I want to have it, and it doesn't matter whether wear I it or not. Beautiful.
Love this look :)

Hmmm... I am a girly girl but I can't walk around the city looking like a wrapped present. I have long hair so I own a lot of accessories but I can't stick a feather in my hair and not mock it. I am hoping this is a bad phase and it will go out..
Stick with the basics. Save the feathers for Easter hats.

A girl can never have too many hair accessories(in my humble opinion!)
