Short Hair

After having the same hairstyle for the last 5 years, I was ready for something new. At first, I thought I'd try a shorter hairstyle. Short short hair a la Sienna Miller and Kiera Knightley was suggested.

But as effortlessly chic as they look, it is just a little bit too daring for me. In the end, inspiration came in the form of . . SHOCK. . . Nicole Richie!

She's not exactly my fashion icon, but one must admit that she does look good with short layered kind of bob hairstyle (and her outfits are vastly improved thanks to Rachel Zoe). And the length is just perfect, since its short enough to be different but not so short as to be too shocking to my delicate constitution. There is also such flexibility, as her hair looks great natural, straight AND curly (although not everyone has a personal hairstylist at their disposal all the time).

Alas, Vince, my fabulous hairdresser at the Aveda salon London, made me see the error in my logic.

a) Her face shape is small and angular, so it does not suit all face shapes. I have an oval shaped face, so technically I should fit everything, but I'm still a bit skeptical about it. . .

b) But more importantly, she's blonde and has highlights, which gives the hairstyle texture and shape. If you, like me, are not blonde and have very defined highlights, then the haircut will just turn out to be a boring bob despite all the layerings. Such wisdom. (Note that Sienna and Kiera also has highlights to define their hairstyle)

In the end, Vince layered my hair a LOT, giving it more texture and movement, while keeping it long. Then, he straightened my hair with a flat iron. The end result was sleek and fun. And I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE my new hair style. Its different but still very me. Unfortunately, the difference is less prominent naturally. Now I'm actually considering permanently straightened so I can look sleek and fabulous everyday!

  2. I hate having my hair cut! I always have such high expectations, can't wait... and then it looks just the same, or totally different to what you asked for. The last time I had it cut... I had it dyed too, now I'm quite a vain person, but even I cannot see even a slight change in colour, THEY DYED MY HAIR THE SAME COLOUR!, and trimmed by a good few inches. Looks the same to me. No-one has commented on my hair being different... because it isn;t. The time before that (a long long time a go) I wanted in shoulder length - ish. i'd had it when I was younger and it looked awful because my hair is massively thicj, but now with ceramics etc surely it would look sleek and bob like.... it ended up chin length. And what can you do? When you realise they've gone too far THEY'VE ALREADY DONE IT!!! You can't stop them mid-attack.

You're lucky having a hairdresser to talk through options with you, I've always wanted one to say "You know what would look good with your face shape?" but they never do, they always ask what I want. But then rarely deliver.

  4. PICTURES!

I am a fan of the Nicole Richie hair myself, but how great for you that you have a hairstylist who knows what can and cannot be done?

    Now, show us some pictures!

  6. my friend had her hair permanently straightened in China a couple of years ago, and it's still in. It looks cute, but it kind of kills volume and make your hair look flat.

  7. Last summer I had Japanese straightening/thermal reconditioning done back home (in China). I loved it! I can't wait to get it redone again. You wake up with perfect hair (no flat-irons, no blowdryers, not even brushes!) everyday for the first 6-8 months or so, after that, your natural texture grows in, and by then the chemicals have slowly washed away the pin-straight effect. By then, it looks like a "natural" staight look.

  9. Straightening your hair frys it.
    Trust me.
I have two friends who did.
    It made their hair coarse.

  10. sarah-jean: will def tell u guys if I do decide on it. but i'm still hesistating because i do like the flexibility of going from curly to straight in a hair wash even though its a lot of trouble.

Anon1: i know how you feel. everytime one goes for a haircut we have to do so much preparation beforehand. and we dunt even know if it looks good on us beforehand. most of the time i just wish it were like on the makeovers in ANTM and they'd just tell u what hair you should have. thats why i loved vince.

Leila: the permanent killing of volume is also one of my concerns about getting it permanently straightened.

others: about the pic. maybe next time ;)

  11. Wow!! I never noticed how Nicole Ritchie's hair was so nice. I think you should get the hair cut if you haven't all ready. Hmmmm... you're making me consider to have my hair cut :-P

  12. a bit unrelated, but since u mentioned highlights, what is ur take on asian girls with highlighted or dyed hair? Would youi say it's trashy or do u think there's no reason to stick to the colour we were born with, just as brunettes are allowed to go blonde? being asian, my hair is naturally dark brown, but i've had light brown hair for about five years...some people say that's either over or trashy-looking, but i feel like that's the colour that goes with my personality...sorry to go OTT, but just wondering...

  13. That's great! Don't you love it when you get a great haircut?

  14. primrose: I think it depends on what color of highlights/ dyed hair you're talking about. On Asians, blonde looks pretty tacky, whereas brown is more acceptable (depending on the shade and hue.)

  15. i permanently straightened my hair last year and it lasted for a fantastically long time. sleek and shiny and absolutely manageable!

Its called the l'oreal Extenso treatment, if i'm not mistaken. Its a soft straightening technique, not the harsher, more artificially straight rebonding.

its very natural. you should definitely try it.

  16. I have short hair! It's longer than Sienna's - more like Keira's length. It was terrifying to get it cut, but I love it now, and I'm so glad I did it!

  19. I think both Sienna and Keira look better with longer hair - the short short just is really hard to pull off. I think you did the right thing!! Can we see some pics of this fabulous new hairdo?? :)

  20. hi BG,
My hair is VERY long, touches my bum. But im thinking to go for a haircut as the hairloss is thinning my hair alarmingly. Do u think layering it will be good to create more volume? I just dont know what to do with my hair. oh, and i cant cut them short cos the hubby likes em long. *Rolls eyes* :)

  21. I think I'm defintely more of a Nicole Richie fan than I am a Paris fan. I just wish their rivalry would be done and over with so they could be friends again, its so sad!

Someone posted a link to a funny video of Paris taking pictures of herself during a fashion show and thought I would share it with people too. Its at www.fashionways.com. It's hilarious!

  22. oh jeez. i absolutely hate getting my hair cut. i've always had it long and it's naturally straight. Recently i got my hair cut to look like Kirsten Dunst's hair like she had it in Elizabethtown, and I got a soft perm. I loved it the first week, but thats how long it lasted, a week. A permanent is suposed to be well, permanent. Now i'm going somewhere else it getting it all lopped off, Keira Knightly style. Wish me luck!
