SS06 Fashion Trend: Puffy Sleeves in the Shops

I didn't realise until reading your comments from yesterday's post that so many people didn't like the puffy sleeves trend! I have a round face myself and I don't think most puffy sleeve tops make my face rounder, although it does differ from top to top. Retailers must have known that huge puffy sleeve tops wouldn't sell well, so only tiny 'puffs' made it to the shops.

You might have recently noticed a lot of shirts that have sleeves like the one above. It's more 'scrunched' than 'puffed', but I think it's just a variation of the puffs.

This is what I mean by tiny puffs -they're basically just tops with slightly fatter sleeves. These two tops are from Forever 21.

And these tops are from Miss Selfridge. These two are definately more edgy than the Forever 21 tops.

Here are two other tops from Miss Selfridge. The puffy sleeves on the black and white striped top on the right is quite long, so it should be pretty flattering and easy to wear. As for the red and white flower one... well, you better have really toned arms.

Both tops from Anthropologie. The puffy sleeves look loose and comfortable to me, just like the rest of the tops, especially the black one. And just in case you didn't know, grey and black are very fashionable colours right now.

Yes, it's my beloved Marc by Marc Jacobs top again -remember I talked about it in the Empire Waist Tops post? The sleeves are slightly puffy like it would in a dress for dolls.

Another similar but more basic top by Marc by Marc Jacobs.

An oh-so-fashionable white, puffy sleeve Lux House Dress from Urban Outfitters. I like the Victorian ruffle design near the neckline because it blends couture style with street style so it's easy to wear!

An empire wasit dress by Derek Lam. It's pretty but for some odd reason, I just don't totally love it. Maybe it's the material; or maybe I can't think of where and when to wear it to. Anyways, this sleeves of this dress are examples of 'deflated puffs.'

A puffy sleeve printed top by Blumarine. The printed flowers are just a bit too much, but this is an excellent example of how puffy sleeves can look pretty in real life!

You probably noticed that for once, the high street versions of the puffy sleeve clothes look extremely different from the high end versions -talk about lost in translation!

  1. all the high street versions look cheap :( i cant pull off anything with puffy sleeves but i have to say the Blumarine one is so cute to look at! some people have the ability to make this kind of top look not only trendy but timeless as well. off the top of my head it is nicole kidman's Balenciaga wedding dress. its so frilly and the sleeves are so puffy but somehow our nicole just pulled it off with the greatest of ease. she makes it look so regal and timeless! i'd look like a giant doll (like, um, cabbage patch kid? lol) if i wore something even remotely like this.

the "deflated" puffs are good idea by the way if you like the regal-ness of the puffy sleeves but dont want to be OTT.

  2. I love puffy sleeves! They add a touch of regal class and girlyness to any boring tee. They are especially good for busty women, the sleeves equal out the boobies and create a very pretty silhouette.

  4. I love the small puffy sleeves. Especially the tops/dresses with polka dots and low scoop necks, no matter how over-done and outdated. Sad, really, as I have neither the figure, the boobs or the arms to carry them off.

  5. the puffiness is a nice bit of feminine fluff, kind of like a bubble skirt...i am enjoying these little extras as long as they are done classically, simply and sweetly...the one thing about some puffed sleeves that is a deal-breaker is if the the sleeve band is at all tight or restrictive, then it's a no go for me

  7. i love the puffy sleeve trend because it's so 40s and i love retro/vintage. It might not be the greatest for my broad-shouldered figure though (i hate shoulder pads and pray daily that they don't come back with the rest of the 80s far). That grey one from Anthropologie looks forgiving, though.

  8. I like several of the tops in this post.
I'm with you on the big sleeves not looking
right, I have a round face myself & must look
for things that don't add to my roundness.
    Good post, keep on bloggin'!

  9. now we're talking. see how this trend is already everywhere? i can't believe how people think puffy sleeves are too much when they probably already own a few tops in these styles themselves. totally agree with the comment about how they look vintage, and personally, i think vintage/40s and 50s retro can look timeless and classy on almost anyone. ;D

  15. The right forever 21 shirt looks like a semi-chick version of what my old school nurse would wear...But I love the first left Miss Selfridge top (I'm big into little metal rings, so easily classy). The grey shirt from Anthropologie is kinda cute. It's very wearable. The Urban Outfitters one is oh so cute, but unfortunately, not something that could be easily worn to high school!
