Pull Yourself Up By Your Boot Straps

I own a pair of 2 year old Seychelles boots. They're absolutely brilliant in the sense of comfort, practicality and style. I'm so attached that I refuse to believe that the sole is slowly wearing away, that there is hardly any grip left, or that the zipper is removing itself from the actual boot.

But in these harsh winter months (HELLO, yesterday was frigid!) we need to make sure our feet are warm and that we don't slip (that is, if you are fortunate enough to live in a place with the joys of black ice, hail and snow... If not, I apologise for my not-applicable-to-life post).

Here are some boots that I found, sadly prices are much too high for my liking - then again, investing in a good pair of hardy boots is a good idea. Forget the heels and give me those rubber soles, please! Buckles are great on boots, they give them some character and add a little something to your outfit. &those Tory Burch boots with the bi-colour leather, how excellent.

I like to have boots that have zippers up the leg, they are more shapely and much easier to put on, especially when you want to tuck in your trousers.

And for all our sakes. Please DO NOT wear these, I beg you.

  1. Why do people hate Uggs? I don't.

  2. Yeah...They're practical and warm. And who cares if they get gross with snow and ice? I'd rather that happen to my uggs than a pair of leather boots...

  3. Uggs are absolutely heinous. People always speak in such glowing terms about how their ugliness is counteracted by their warmth and comfort. C'mon people: you don't leave the house in sweats and bunny slippers just because they are warm and comfortable, do you? Quit trying to creat a false dichotomy between Uggs and painfully pointy stilettos - there is a middle ground.

Also, completely unrelated: the logo on those Tory Burch boots is rather gawdy, isn't it? Her whole line seems to rely on it and I think that's a shame.

  4. those torys are rain boots, btw. they're insanely heavy as well.

i agree. i love my uggs. they're warm and they feel like walking on marshmellows. i don't understand people's aversion towards them..

  5. uggs, seychelles, tory burch - you're still lucky to have reasons to wear those boots. much as i would also like to, being in a tropical country makes it quite impractical to wearing those.

but still i love pointy stiletto boots. and won't stop in my hunt for the perfect pair. haha.

Actually, if I'm just going to the grocery, then yes. Yes I do. My Uggs are the warmest shoes that I have, and when it gets cold enough, I wear them, fashion be damned. What kills me are the people who wear them in 60 degree weather.

  7. LOL!!! The Uggs!!!!

    ps.
Anon, you're being sarcastic, right? Because Uggs, are leather. Suede is a type of animal skin. :)

    Good post E!

  8. i honestly don't' even think uggs are bad looking. they can be cute when the outfit is done right.

  9. Admittedly, I had a pair of wannabe Uggs when I was playing water polo in the winter-- but honestly, when you're jumping from the water to freezing cold air, Uggs are the warmest things to jam your feet into. As much as I love boots, they don't belong on the pool deck.

However, tell me what the practicality of wearing your PJ short shorts with Uggs are? Uh...no. As someone else said, might as well slap on your bunny slippers.

And oh, I totally agree with the gawdiness of the Tory Burch symbol-- it dates every shoe that comes from that line.

  11. I'm going to continue to wear my uggs because I live in Wisconsin. The other shoes are great for when I don't have to go outside... they'd be ruined

  12. I have a pair of uggs, I mostly wear them when the weather is all icky and I don't want to ruin a perfectly good pair of leather boots. Other than that I agree with them being rather atrocious. Especially when I see them worn with a denim mini skirt. I hate all that is Tory Burch. There is nothing I despise more than a clothing line built around an annoying label.

  13. Some people wear uggs with sweats tucked in. That's when I know that all hope is lost.

  14. I have no clue why anyone would actually be offended by someone wearing Uggs. They're rather bland. It must be something political.

  15. I love winter boots because they are so cosy and warm and I honestly think I have the perfect pair (though they're in their third winter now and the zipper is beginning to go...).

I'm personally not a fans of Uggs, I think they make your feet look like logs or half-melted ice-cream log cakes or something equally as unflattering. And, trust me, you can find equally as comfortable and warm boots that are much nicer for everyone to look at. And why on earth do people wear them in the summer. At least they're not as bad as crocs.

  16. I wish I had some Uggs right now! It's cold and snowy! I have Dolce Vita, Steve Madden, Naturalizers, Doc Martens, et al, but they are just not snow boots and Uggs are! So there! haha

  17. I love how anonymous said "it must be something political."

I like uggs to be honest. the more i see them the cuter they look.

  18. I actually love the Tory Burch symbol - and I usually avoid being a walking advertisement...

I will also join those of you who dislike (I don't hate them...) Uggs.

Uggs is the kind of fashion that wears you(I feel the same way about gladiator sandles, and Crocs).

Beyond being completely unflattering, they do not make sense as a winter boot if you live anywhere where it snows - but that is what they look like. You cannot wear suede in the snow without ruining it at $200 a pop...

  19. Uggs are a classic staple for cold frigid winters. I just wish they would make them with better soles. I am always slipping in mine.
But they do look ridiculous in LA.
Someone told me that Uggs first got popular with surfers in Australia.

    ReplyDelete
  20. It's true; I wouldn't slog through a snowbank in expensive Uggs although I know people do. I would wear them more for the cold. For tromping through snow something waterproof is definitely better and then all fashion bets are off!

That is also a good point about the fashion wearing you. I bought a pair of Crocs that I have virtually never worn! Because they are just so Croc-y! I don't think Uggs are quite so bad--I saw someone in line at the Walmart return counter wearing nice dark jeans tucked into dark brown boots and I had to check but indeed they were Uggs. It looked totally appropriate and I couldn't tell right away that they were authentic Uggs, just warm, cozy boots!

To each one, one's own! Good points, statements! I still want a pair, though, I think. At least my Croc boondoggle didnt't cost as much as Uggs!

  21. I live in Canada and I have gone years without boots because I refuse to wear Uggs. I almost gave in because they ARE very warm, but I just can't bring myself to wear them in public if I ever bought them.

I was shopping for some decent winter boots online yesterday and actually ordered two pairs (I don't know which ones I like better!) and they are both waterproof and lined. However they are patent leather... I don't know how I feel about the shininess? It's definitely not as classy-looking as normal leather and can look cheap/tacky, but they are the only leather boots that were waterproof. What do you guys think?

  22. Oh Ugg Boots are so ugly! I think the main problem with them is how, well this is the case in Britain anyway, so many fake ones are worn by really trampy girls; they've lost their appeal!

    ReplyDelete
  23. ummm ugg do indeed have suede, not leather-it's quite obvious and that is what the little card thing that comes with them says

  24. I am a Seychelles addict. I love their boots, flats, pumps...all of it!

Also, I do like Uggs for the comfort and warmth, but think they are highly unattractive.

    ReplyDelete
  25. i think uggs are more of an indoor shoe, something of a hardcore slipper, that's why they are ugly yet warm.

  26. You've got to be kidding about the Tory Burch boots; they're rather tacky, especially with her huge signature logo and that orange with the black! It's not Halloween. I like the Mark Nason boots. About the Uggs, they are definitely the most attractive cold-weather boots. I have looked for other sheepskin boots and all of the ones I've encountered are ten times uglier than Uggs. I have an awesome pair of BCBG leather boots that come up to just below the knee and they are no where nearly as warm as my Uggs, despite the fact that they're much more attractive. Some things I would never buy (i.e. Crocs--why does anyone need them?) but Uggs are necessary; there is no alternative to them. As long they're not being worn in the summer with denim shorts or skirts, Uggs are okay, albeit unattractive (but not unbearably so, like Crocs).

  27. I've been trying for years to like uggs, a few of my friends wear them and I just keep trying. But alas, even though Im in Canada and its winter, I just don't see the appeal in them. Same with crocs, I cringe every time I see someone wearing them. Even worse when they're brightly coloured. I love the Seychelle boots there, their website has some great looking products! So jealous!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I used to really hate uggs too, think they are ugly and completely styleless, but over the years they have grown on me. Now I even own a pair! :)
They keep my feet warm and cozy on cold winter days (which makes up more than half the year in canada hahaha), it's too bad they are not waterproof otherwise i'd wear them everyday!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh, I love boots! They're my new obsession this season; I've just gotten a great pair from Victoria's Secret (great catalogue store btw) and I've already worn them thrice in the last two weeks.
I'm not going to diss Uggs, because they are quite comfy without look too hideous (like sweats & slippers would), but I hate the idea of people considering them fashion when they clearly aren't. They are in the category of sweats, slippers, hoodies, etc, because everyone likes them for comfort.

I have these uggs. So you're telling me to go put on a pair of expensive boots just to look nice even though I live in Chicago and there's salt, snow, and ice everywhere? There comes a point when you just need to be practical!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Uggs are cute. They were originally made for surfers in australia, to keep their feet warm when they weren't in the water. They are -not- waterproof, and are not made for the snow. I do not own a pair of Uggs. I thought I would get Uggs this year for the winter, but I bought a pair of riding boots from shoemall instead. I have already received some great compliments on them. Why do you need to spend enormous amounts of money on your fashion? Go to zappos or something. You can get a much nicer looking shoe for alot less.

    ReplyDelete
  32. In Australia where Uggs were born, they are a staple part of the "uniform" of bogans (familiarise yourself with that term here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bogan).

Hence, I would not be caught DEAD wearing them no matter how cold it was. They are ugly and tacky.

  35. I'm sick of people using the faux-practical "I HAVE to wear Uggs because it's sooo cold outside" excuse. I live in Sask., Canada, where there is snow on the ground for almost six months of the year, and yet a stylish person around these parts wouldn't be caught dead wearing a pair of Uggs. There are plenty of gorgeous flat boots out there that don't require selling your soul (or sole!) to the heinous LA fashion gods of all things Uggs and Juicy Couture.

People wear them all the time here in freezing norway, and I hates it hates it hates it. And also those fu*king hideous crocs. What the h*ll?

Be that as it may, this thought needs a touch of arranging and exertion as you have to choose where to post(facebook, whatssapp, twitter, instagrame etc..)
