A Survey on School Bags

Phew! Today's been a long day. After I did an awful presentation for my Employment Relations class, I had to help out at the signup stall of a society I am a committee member of. So while I was sitting there getting really bored because nobody was signing up, I was thinking about what to blog about today. Then it hit me: school bags and statistics!

Don't freak out. It's more serious than our typical post, but hey, do YOU ever notice what bags people at your campus or your workplace carry? I reckon that bags used in university are pretty similar to the ones used in offices because they serve a similar purpose: to carry paper around.

Back to the point, I was sitting on the main 'street' of my school campus and did a little survey. Basically I counted how many bags of a particular brand walked past the signup stall from 1:45pm to 2:15pm, which is the end of lunch hours. Just some extra information: I go to a London university which has a tiny campus and a high international ratio. Here are the results:

  1. 67 Guccis -THE most popular bag at my uni. Gucci has a large variety of monogram totes and large bags which are stylish and strong enough to put all the books in.

  2. 58 Longchamp -Loads of girls carry Longchamps. I personally don't like them but I can understand that they are practical and are available in many colours.

  3. 6 Louis Vuittons -Quite a few people, male and female carry Vuittons. The most popular one is the messenger bag. But only a few people managed to carry it in style!
  4. 3 Pradas and 3 Burberries -The Pradas are usually carried around by seriously stylish people. When I say Prada, there were both the classical nylon bags and the beautiful leather ones. Just to make this a fair survey, I must note that Pradas are usually harder to spot because Prada is just subtly stylish that way, so I may have missed a few. And well, Burberries are always a favourite among students.
  5. 1 Dior -There was this girl carrying around a Dior saddle bag on her shoulders and her books in her hand. So impractical!

Another reason I did this survey is because I'm thinking of buying a new school bag myself. Now I have a slightly better idea of what I want. Tell us what school bags the students at your school uses! I'd love to know!

Wow, you definitely have a very rich school population. I doubt you'd see one vuitton sitting on my campus all day, and even if u do, I'd doubt the authenticity of it. The most common brand seen here would be Coach. And maybe Prada if you're REALLY observant. I'm personally keeping my eye out for a classical looking Coach or Prada tote for school.

Yeah North Face backpacks are probably where it is at at the University of Chicago.

I see quite a bit of Coach and TONs of fake LV (I am guilty as charged there) but I have never seen Prada on campus ever.

I found a great cordovon leather moc croc at Filene's Basement of all places. It is huge, fits my laptop, and looks quite discretely fashionable

well.. i go to a boarding school, so its different for me, cause everything is near me all the time. i carry my samantha thavasa by nicky hilton star bag, and sometimes my balenciaga. i only put my wallet, cell phone, lip gloss and a few pens. i carry my folders and books around.
a few of my friends use burberry, LV and versace. other people use backpacks or the top shop recycle bags. a big NO,NO!!!
i say, a cute bag that you can carry on your shoulder... around A4 size. you really don't need a bag bigger than that.
hope you find a nice bag soon!

Tons of Aussie brands like Ripcurl and Crumpler.

And Japanese styles (cool and funky) are the most coveted.

this is in response to missy-j's post - yeah, singaporean students are not so fortunate and rich to carry branded bags. I can't imagine any uniform-wearing jc student carrying a logo tote to school. Would the school frown upon it?
Even in university (I was from NUS), there were very few logo bags. Only the rich brats could afford such bags.

On another topic, I'm thinking of getting a structured bag from Esprit, boxy-shaped with many compartments. Kinda military looking, very utility style as well. Any idea if it'll go out of fashion v soon? Or should I invest my money in a logo bag, but I only like LV for quality. Hmm..

what uni do you go to Harrods girl? I go to UCL and your bag survey sounds alot like the bags you find here! although the gucci's, lv's and prada's are usually only worn by VERY rich international students. Most typical students wear topshop bags etc....

Wow, this is pretty interesting, hearing what people from schools around the world carry!

I'm pretty sure the bags in my school aren't fake -most ppl here are perfectionists. And yup, def lots of Top Shop bags around, I just can't tell which high street shops the bags come from.

Anonymous: Totally agree with you -Top Shop recycle bags are a big no!

z_phyr: It depends what you plan to use the bag for. If you're planning to use it for a long time, then you should probably go for Vuitton.

chichi: Hey, I go to LSE. Think our schools are really near each other!

A lot of girls in my uni (i go to a private med school in Malaysia) carry sling bags, just big enough for a pencil case and a small file...I've seen one Prada, and a Dior saddle bag,and one girl actually had a Birkin, but with the *realness* of copies you never know...I alternate between a Gucci tote (much like the one you featured,guilty..so cliched!), a small Sportsac and a slouchy leather bag I got from Topshop..
Here in Malaysia its really hard to find nice stuff, so we usually end up heading south to Singapore or up to HK..you're so lucky to be in London!
Love your site!

most girls in medicine carry tod's or kate spade. i personally carry a 1996 LV cup bag. It's not a "look at me" kind of bag, but very subtly stylish. definitely helps when you don't want to get mugged on the tube.

Oh my God!!

At my campus (Germany) I saw one DKNY and one Gucci bag on students and one Vuitton at a teacher (but she is British anyways)... otherwise there are mostly Eastpack backpacks and one Jansport (mine)!

Germans are no fashion fanatics, you must know and the only reason, I carry the Jansport is that I studied in the US for about a year! ;)

A lot of people use plain old backpacks at my school. The really preppy kids have tote bags though. And if I don't need a lot of books I use my fake quilted Chanel tote-ish thing.

My favorite quote is the one from the girl in Lisbon who made her own bag. I love your creativity and your ability to escape from this completely rediculous obsession with brands! Is the bag attractive and useful or not? That should really be what matters...

In my opinion a brand is just a way to inform other people of how much money you spent on something or to try to seem "in the know." How "in the know" do you really have to be to figure out the top brand bags? How about a little inovation from the fashionista crowd?

I'm no longer a student but I teach at a private English School in Japan and they carry all types of bags...LV, Hermes, Prada, Gucci, Coach, Burberry, etc. You name it, one of my students probably has it. You know how it is in Japan.

Here at University of Toronto (downtown), people generally use the regular backpack (Roots, Eddie Bauer, Swiss, Jansport, etc). Some girls have one shoulder bags (Puma is pretty popular and Lululemon too). A lot of my classmates use huge and ugly dark blue backpacks that were donated by Apotex (a drug company) to all pharmacy students. Many of the medical students use nice blue bags that were donated by the Canadian Medical Association. I use a red, beige, and grey Roots backpack (which I had since grade 11, haha) and a Lululemon bag to hold my exercise things. I think the most expensive thing I saw (that I think may be real since a lot of things are fake here) was a Juicy bag, only because the price is more within the limit for students here.

I go to a private school in Canada. Like someone said before, there are a bunch of lululemon duffel bags. There are a couple LVs and Kate Spades, and some coach. Everyone else just carries a noname messenger bag (usually tan or beige), a biggish leather purse, or a big tote bag with a cute print.

I go to boarding school in england near london, and because my school is co-ed the idea is to appear as minimalist as possible , because lets be fair being bent double under our 9 english books is not attractive. Most girls along with myself (i admit) use totally unpractical large handbags from accessorize, monsoon and topshop, we then compress vital objects such as makeup bag, mobile, ipod, prep diary and pencil case into it.The small issue of our texts books is resolved by excessive use of lockers so that only maximum of 3 books are carried at one time.

I go to school at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Since it is a private school most of the kids are rich and hail from the Chicago suburbs. A lot of the girls carry around large LV, Kate Spade and Coach tote for their books. Most of the guys would carry their books in a North Face backpack.

Like a UofT student said, it's really hard to spot expensive totes and bags at my campus. Most carry backpacks, ranging from Jansport, Roots, Mountain Equipment, and others. The most popular bag at my school is tna. Actually tna bags have become more like a uniform here. Puma, lululemon, Guess, Juicy and LV follow tna.I never see anyone carrying Gucci or Prada or Chanel at my campus. I personally use athletic bags, they suit my needs more. I carry Lululemon, Puma, Reebok, targus laptop backpack, Paris Hilton, Guess, Banana Republic, and some other cute but noname bags.

I go to an American School In Singapore. Somebody recently wrote a school newspaper article sayint that one sided bags are bad for you back. It's true. So I know that one sided bags are in (I used to cary a Chanel one myself) but now i carry a prada back pack or a cute newspaper boy type bags. It's still not good for your back, but I think One sided bags are worse.

I go to a university in toronto,
canada and by far, the most popular bag is the tna/aritzia bag...omg, it seems like every other girl on campus has one! I'd say about 85%!

I was recently shopping for a bag myself and decided to go with this 100% cotton, navy blue messenger bag by puma.

It's quite unique (unlike most other puma bags) with a neat rope closure. I've got many complements on this bag so far and am super pleased with it =)

Very easy to carry too, for those days when I carry everything but the kitchen sink to school ;-).

I live in new york and most of the bags i c at my school are coach, north face, which are more popular among the guys, jansport, aeropostale, which i wear and abercrombie. I also see some victoria secret, nine west, another of which i wear, a few Lv n more. Its a big school so there are a lot of variety of different bags. Others jus wear some oversized unknown name brand.People (including me)buy or change bags frequently so you're lucky if u c them in the same bag the next month.

I go to a private school in England, but most people here carry regular high street brands like LOTS of Topshop, Accessorize, Monsoon, River Island, Oasis etc. I am looking for a new bag atm too. Most people have quite big handbags and manage to cram the odd book in with all the rest of the stuff they have to carry round (ipod, make-up, mobile, pens) and then we always carry our files/folders because otherwise your bag gets all big and sticks out.

I've categorized the ppl in my school into 3 categories. There's the impractical people, who carry around little tacky Baby Phat, Roca Wear or Apple Bottoms handbags. I personally don't like them, they're too flashy. Then there's the truly stylish (not to mention RICH) girls who carry real Coach, Dior or LV, etc. Then there's the girls inbetween who realize bags for school should be cute but still practical, and they normally have Roxy, Billabong, Puma, etc. For myself, my favorite school totes are my TokiDoki Lesportsac ones. They're cute, colorful, and make me unique since I'm the only girl who has them =)

I was thinking of getting one for that... I would only carry a binder, papers, and a lunch...) the quilted chanel bags, and I've seen one Louis Vuitton...
