Body Worlds II
So this week, I finally went to see The Body Worlds II. I've been meaning to see it since January, but it has taken the fact that the exhibit was ending (THIS WEEKEND!) in Chicago to get me to finally book the tickets and go. And to think, its not even that far from where I live, seriously. Anyways, we booked tickets to see the Human Body imax and the exhibition because we thought it was all together. Not so. While the imax wasn't too bad, it wasn't quite what we were expecting- a detailed video of how they plastinate people. It was a video of how the human body works and it was cool in that they actually showed real videos of how a foetus is developed inside it's mother and how food is churned in the stomach and gall bladder splurts out bile in the small intestines. I've learnt in theory all these things, butI've never actually seen it happen. Oh and did you know that our hands were oringally a big blob of cells and the shape was formed as the cells degenerate? Sigh, I wish the cells at the tip of my fingers would've stayed, I'd have liked longer and leaner finger. But yeah, not exactly what we were hyping up for.
Anyway, the actual exhibit was quite fascinating. The bones, the brains, the real organs, the giant camel, the floating nerves and of course- the actual bodies. It was amazing the way they were preserved. You can even see the eyes and the eye lashes! Oh and there were interesting historical displays hanging around too. Like how Da Vinci used to dig up bodies in grave yards and dissected them to get a better sense of the body. And how Frogandard was quite the anatomist himself- and who knew from his gorgeous paintings?
My only slight concern with the exhibit was the artistic displays of the human body, which seemed kind of unneccesary. Its hard to remember sometimes that these were actually human beings. Especially when one see's displays like the drawer man, where chunks were cut and pulled out of the body like drawers and the spiral man, whose body was cut out like spirals. And the ballerina, football and yoga positions. . . I know it says its to show the muscles of the human body in action, but it felt more like they were placed like that for a better display. I'm aware that if they didn't do things like these, I probably wouldn't have found the exhibit quite as fascinating, but then this other part of me remembers that these are real. . . . .
And lastly, here is what your lungs look like if you smoke.
Overall, it was a great experience. The human body is truly amazing. If you haven't already, check out if they're coming to your area next on their site!

ewww *looking at the lungs going gross from smoke*
i wish people would stop smoking already.. dont they know they are making themselves SMELL and have yellow teeth? not an attractive look!
speaking of human bodies, have you seen poor allegra versace? my heart goes out to that poor, poor girl. she doesn't seem to have the proper support from her mother that she would desperately need.
but that's a WHOLE other issue.. in summary, everyone just try to stay as healthy as you can! you can have all the wonderful clothes and accessories in the world, but if you don't have a healthy body to wear it there is no point.
I saw body Words II when they were in Boston last year and loved it. I though that the way that they displayed the bodies were so artistic. This was difinately a lot more interesting than my Anatomy class I took. All I can say it that everyone if they have the chance should see Body Worlds. It was just so beautiful. I guess it makes you look at your body a little bit differently and somehow I came out loving my body in a whole different way.
I must say that the pregnant woman was a little bit sad to me. But I really enjoyed the yoga woman.
Ooo I want to see this! It all looks so fascinating.
I missed the chance to see this when it was in Toronto unfortunately....but it looks very interesting
Wasn't Casino Royale filmed on one of those exhibitions? Just reminds me of the movie...but I'd have hated to see the lungs in real life. That's just plain rough.
So cool, ive always wanted to go
no offense.. but gross.
Yuck! I guess somethings just aren't for me...
Creepy...I don't know if I agree with this exhibit.
Unfortunately I missed this exhibit when it was in town, but I really think that this is a great way to honour the complexity and intricacies of the body.
Ahh!! Those lungs! They look like asphalt. If only people could see what they're doing to their organs by smoking. Completely disgusting. I couldn't date a smoker. - Tanith
I would NOT want to be plastinated when I die.
I'm just gonna say it- this exhibit is the shit. I'm a science biology major and these 'plastinations' are so real, its well, unreal, you can see right down to the hypothalamus and pituitary glands. Love love love it.
you definately need to have a strong stomach for this stuff...my bf would love it since he's in medicine. i think i'd get grossed out in the first 5 minutes =/ still, i think there is one in dc and i'll try to take him to see it.
i had a non-body works question. i bought a low cut v-neck jersey dress from oldnavy over the weekend. unfortunately, it's a little too low cut in the front but it's a great dress so i bought it anyway. other than a cardigan, what could i wear (over or under) it to make it more modest? thanks!
h: try simply wearing a tank top or scoop neck cami underneath the dress in a color that is neutral or for more oomph try a contrasting color (perhaps neon?). hope this helps!
Ugh, the lungs...they look...ewww! But other than that...it looks really interesting
I think the whole idea of this makes me sick. All of those people were once alive. It really makes me mad that they are not identified. Human bodies should NOT be used for profit. They say it's to educate people, but they are making millions off of it.
SICK!
