US Vogue's New Favourite Models
Every fashion-lover out there has been so excited to hear that the May's US Vogue cover will finally feature models instead of celebrities. And here it is: Lily Donaldson, Hilary Rhoda, Doutzen Kroes, Sasha Pivovarova, Caroline Trentini, Raquel Zimmermann, Jessica Stam, Chanel Iman, Coco Rocha and Agyness Deyn, all wearing Gap's Designer Edition white shirts.
First off, I have to admit I'm not a fan of the cover. I definitely prefer a model over a celebritity to be the covergirl of Vogue but there's something about this cover I just don't completely like. Maybe it's because it's a full-body shoot and you can't see the girls clearly, unlike the Sept04 cover, which was the previous cover of models and was beautiful. Or maybe because the editors didn't feel that a cover with only one or a few models would be a strong enough cover, (which they're probably right and it's just sad how few Americans appreciate covers of models for a fashion magazine.)
Anyways, I suppose this is better than no models' cover. Thankfully, the article inside, called Hit Girls, is a great article that manages to talk about each of the ten models. I certainly love the models who I already liked before more now, such as Lily D. (who always looks great on the runway and I love her sophisticated British looks,) and Stam. (The pic above is of Lily D. and Trentini.)
This is obviously not an interesting pose, but it's my favourite shot in this editorial because of the clothes, colours, Stam and just. Stam is one of my top 5 favourite model -her eyes are SO stunning.
My favourite of the ten is Sasha. She's sometimes a bit awkward on the runway but her editorials are usually amazing, especially the edgy ones -she does the sophisticated, dark look and young, angsty look really well. I have her editorials as my desktop wallpaper a lot!
Ah Raquel. She's one of this season's star as many big brands have her in their ads, like Fendi. I have to say I didn't like her at first (in last season's Louis Vuitton ads,) but she was perfect in the new Fendi ads.
I have to admit I've never noticed that much about Doutzen, but she's certainly got some really good contracts, including some 'mass brands' like L'Oreal.
Coco Rocha aboslutely rocked the Balenciaga ads. But other than that, I don't notice much of her.
And now onto two who I don't think really belong with the group (or I just don't like them): Aggy and Iman. OK, so Aggy supposedly has a lot of personality and has got a more unique feel. And she wears spunky outfits herself, but so what? I just really don't like her. As for Iman, who you cannot have missed because she's Teen Vogue's new star, I'm just not liking her much. I mean, I really remember in the Teen Vogue interview, she's like, have you heard of Chanel, the brand? Umm, ya. And I guess I just don't get her appeal in general. At the moment, I just of her as Vogue's new Liya (who I think is gorgeous.)
I totally respect Vogue's editors' choices, but I just want to know how did the editors decide not to include Freja, Natasha Poly or Du Juan?

Sasha Pivovarova, Caroline Trentini, and Stam are hardly the "next" top models. They have been around for ages and have quite a few runway shows and campaigns under their belts. Adyness Deyn, Coco Rocha, and Chanel Iman are right on the spot; they will be huge (although I really don't like Chanel and her smirk).
The cover looks weirdly positioned, and I really don't like the models' makeup.
Although hardly a next top model, but I miss Daria.
I wanted to see Daria and Du Juan!
I would have loved to see an Asian model like Du Juan or Hye Park on the cover! But I do love Hilary Rhoda :)
Hye Park or Du Juan SHOULD have been on that cover..its dissappointing that they didnt use an asian model..and Du Juan deserves it. and its almost sad to say that they only used chanel cause of her race. to fill the quota' b/c compared to the other girls on that cover she hasnt worked as much as them..
I do agree that this US cover's a bit of a disappointment compared to the last one. I bet you tho' one of the reasons they went with the FULL body shot is to get a good look at those Gap blouses (thinly veiled product placement?) Food for thought.
Aside from that, I am disappointed that they didn't have more then ONE girl of color making it in Vogue, a bit sad I think... (didn't some fashion magazines hype up the asian models making the scene? Where;s's that?)
I love all the shades of blue on the cover.
I wish they'd photographed Raquel Zimmerman in a better outfit. She's such a clasically beautiful girl, but she looks like a twelve year old in that.
I think they probably left off Natahsa Poly because she really has been around a while - longer that Raquel, Caroline and Stam... and hasn't made such a big impact (although she's carved out a great career she hasn't ever had a 'buzz' around her).
And Anon #2 and 3 Daria was on the Sept 04 cover
Caroline, Stam, Sasha and Lily D. have been around for AAAGES (well, in model times anyway). Chanel Iman is NOT on their level, not even CLOSE.
I personally love Doutzen, i think she is so beautiful. Caroline is also one of my faves, very quirky and cute.
I am not too big a fan of Sasha.. she just looks like a Russian Gemma Ward. And I really do not like Agyness AT ALL. Her look just doesnt do it for me.
Where is Heather Marks? How can they put Chanel Iman over HEATHER MARKS? Freja? Irina? Natasha Poly? Lisa Cant? If they wanted someone 'new' they could have put Vlada in.
Hmm. I don't know. Not happy. They should have either gone with more established girls (and not called the article 'next top model') or have completely new girls and not include the more seasoned models.
if they included aggy, they should have included iekeliene.
I actually like the cover. I think that it's good that they are not putting the same faces that we have already seen since it's not everyday that models are on covers anymore.
I thinks that it's stupid to compare the models with other models like Sasha looking like a Russian Gimma Ward. Point is she's not Gemma. Or even to say that Chanel is the new Liya seeing that she doesn't look anything like her. I feel there's not enough differences in culture in the fashion world and if Vogue wanted to mix it up a little then they should.
Totally agree about Aggy. I mean she is a cute girl I suppose but looks far too pedestrian to be on the cover of Vogue...oops.
As for Iman, she is a beautiful girl. And it is nice to see at least one woman of color.
Mimi: You're right - it's a crime that Iekeliene isn't included. I kind of wish they'd picked Julia Dunstall, too.
I pretty much like all of these models, but they are definitely a mix of "new" and "established". Probably a better shoot of top models right now was in Harper's Bazaar a couple months ago, the one featuring Freja, Stam, Irina, and Gemma.
Still, there's finally some models on the cover. (UK Vogue is much better about that.)

aggy looks kind of odd in some pictures, but have you seen her dior homme pictures? they are seriously striking:

so amazing!
That cover looks like a typical Vanity Fair type of photo spread.
whew! i thought i'm the only one who doesn't think chanel is the next top model. c'mon... chanel? iman? originality pls... peace :)
this cover is a disappointment
there's such lack of impact n i just find the setup kind of boring.
I really wish an asian model appeared on the cover.. but I guess we're still working on showing the beauty of all ethnicities.
I also dislike Chanel Iman. I'm not sure why. Maybe her smirk or just her Teen Vogue interview which made me very annoyed. Yes, we know what Chanel the brand is. :/
the cover is alright, but i'm really not impressed. that being said, i don't mind at all when vogue doesn't put models on the cover. i love fashion, but at least most actresses are famous for having talent, not just taking a pretty picture.
The new Vogue cover resembles the first Vogue supermodel cover featuring Cindy, Naomi, Linda, Christie, etc.
I remember there were ladders involved.
Chanel Iman's mom is half-Korean so she covers the token Black/Asian model.
Seriously, definitely Hye Park and/or Du Juan should've been included. It's a major slap in the face to exclude these two especially when they have been the only Asian models, after the redoubtable Anna Bayle, to hit it really big in the modelling circuit in recent memory.
Shame, shame, shame Anna!
P
I can't stand Chanel Iman. AT ALL.
I really wanted Du Juan though, she's gorgeous.
chanel iman is fab!!!!!! the rest? whatever!
I completely aggree about Aggy and Chanel Iman being completely out of place amongst the other top-notch girls! Don't get me wrong, I think Chanel Iman is a beautiful girl, but I just don't think she's at the same Calibur as Doutzen Kroes and Jessica Stam!
I could not believe Gemma Ward, Heather Marks, Freja Beha, Lily Cole, or Cyntia Dicker did not get chosen over those two...it was a dissappointment.
But I am so glad there are models on the cover of my new Vogue, I can hardly complain!!
Hye Park is a pretty girl but she has one facial expression. Seriously. I don't see a long shelf life for her. She'll be old news in 5 years' time.
So much love for Chanel Iman! I wish they wouldve put Du Juan up there too though.
In the article, Jonathan Van Meter goes on and on about how different each girl's look is--- but if you ask me, Lily and Caroline look like identical twins! Like little VOGUE bookends. The art director, at the very least, could have swapped one of them out for Chanel Iman. Not that I'm her biggest fan after reading the article, but I would have liked to have seen some color on the cover besides blue.
It is so sad how much we are all so ignorant about race. Is so amazing how everyone "automatically" assumes that Chanel is a token, because she is black. It underscores the fact that black people are beautiful and are equally able to succeed in the modelling world. Give Chanel a break. The girl only came in last year and already has walked for the creme-de-la-creme within a short period of time. That is AWESOME. Chanel is STUNNING and yes, she may be new compared 2 Trentini, Doutzen but give her time. Go se who Chanel has worked for--everyone. She accomplished such success within months, in an industry that is almost WHITE. All the designers are going crazy for her. My God u guys are SO damn racist, if that's how i should put it. Is to sad years after the civil rights, black people CANNOT advance or succeed in this country w/o some white person crying affirmative action. Everyone is talkin about how all the white girls are pretty and how Channel, the only black girl is NOT pretty or not up 2 par with the other girls. Gimme a break. Am sure the same people who make such comments will not even see this as a race thing. The girl is very unique, beautiful and u all are HATERS. My God. It is amazing how we treat models of color. The media has done enuf of that. Such a shame. I just cannot believe what i have read here and in other blogs about this particular cover and HOW everyone is HATING on Chanel. I like the other girls, they are all unique. Beauty does not have 2 white all the time.
If you had read the post DIRECTLY above yours, I was siding with you.... I wanted Chanel on the COVER not the fold out!! That is what I said about wanting to "see some color on the cover besides blue". I believe you read my posting wrong, and maybe others too.... try seeing the good things that people wrote and not just focusing on the bad!!!! We are all not haters so it's kind of odd to post such a blanket statement. A lot of people share your similar views if you keep yourself open to that!!
BRAZILIAN MODELS ROCKS!!!!
hahahaha
Lets get down to the facts
Caroline-Just plain ugly
Lily.D- gross without hair down
Hilary Rhoda - Classic but a bit man like at tiems
Doutzen-classic
Raquel-Beautiful but soemtiems looks bad
Chanel -Get her OUT
Aggy-great personality , funky
coco-great personality
jessica.S- nothing special at all.. can look pretty with styling
Sasha-the BEST!!!!
CINTIA DICKER PLEASE!
She's so stunning and deserves success. Beautiful and unique.
Chanel is a really d0wn t0 earth girl... excuse her if shes n0t perfect but wh0 is. s0me pe0ple just cant see pe0ple f0r their true beauty.Chanel Iman is still very y0ung and i think with a little more time and experience she will be the new Naomi Cambell... n0 n0t because she is black but because she is a very str0ng y0ung lady.
chanel is a pot head.
i think the only pretty ones are doutzen 'the dutch pride' kroes, sasha and i really love chanel. She's got something exotic that makes her very pretty. So to me it's very weird that the most people dislike her, but you know what they say: Every one's got it's own taste.
Wow, there is a great deal of useful data above!
