Any Publicity = Good Publicity?

We've always been told that any publicity is good publicity. But really, who actually wants bad publicity? (Wait, I just remembered Spencer, the why-wouldn't-Heidi-dump-him and publicity-seeking a-hole from the Hills. Nevermind.) Remember back in Tom Ford's Gucci days, he supposedly freaked out when he saw Victoria Beckham wearing his designs. The story (as spread by numerous media and the book, Fashion Babylon) is that he called his Gucci's London PR to find out who had put Posh in the outfit. When the PR told him that Posh had bought it full price at the Gucci shop, he screeched, 'Well, somebody stop her!' Even though I'm indifferent to Tom Ford, one can't help but feel sorry for him. Afterall, which designer would want his designs to be worn by people who he deemed as eww?

I've always thought of Prada as a foward-thinking, intelligent and artsy-feeling brand. Which is why it must have been a sad, sad day for Miuccia Prada and her PR team to see her lovely design worn by the unstylish likes of Britney Spears. (Although props to Britney for looking better these days.) That pink handbag is totally mismatched with the dress and the cowboy hat just makes me think the dress is some bad mix of ethnic and Texas ranch wear. And does the dress even fit her properly in the first place? Poor Miuccia must be so traumatised! But then again, Miuccia thinks in mysterious ways -whoever knows what she thought of this?

In my mind, celebs like Nicole Richie, MKA Olsen, Mischa Barton, Kate Bosworth, Kiera Knightley and even Lindsay Lohan are excellent, positive PR. People like Paris Hilton are sort of neutral -some people love her style and some hate her style. As for Britney, well, she's sort of in the neutral to negative territory, isn't she? I suppose Miuccia can take comfort that Britney at least didn't flash her undergarments or private parts while in the dress. Now that's got to be a plus in Lalaland.

I have to say, I'm not a big fan of the dress. If I hadn't known it was Prada, I would have thought Britney pulled it out of some forsaken Value Village haunt.

i think good fashion is fashion that looks good on everyone. i know that's not always true (or maybe it's false most of the time?), but i dont know if that prada dress would've looked good on anyone. it might've been passed by unnoticed, but i really dont think it would've made the "best dressed" list either. all that aside, britney does look horrible in that dress!

I don't feel its my place to comment on the dress, if anyone else wants to thats perfectly ok. All I want to say is that for any design its important what kinds of accessories you match with it.

i am a prada fan, but that "dress" is hideous, and it's ten times more hideous on bs.

You can take the girl out of the trailor park...

I think it's an interesting dress, and someone much hipper and with smaller breasts could have pulled it off. The hat looks completely idiotic, as does the purse. But imagine a tall, leggy girl in opaque tights and wedges wearing this. It wouldn't look so bad. It's just a hard dress to pull off, and BS can't do it; she looks like a hick in almost everything these days, but hey at least there are no Uggs involved!

I'm reminded of this Chloe dress that Michelle Williams wore (http://www.tiffanyastone.com/images/chloe-dress-michellew.jpg) and got a lot of criticism for. It's also tough (especially the grannyish colours), and seems kind of big on her.

Ew, i completely agree. No offense to Prada, im not even a huge fan of this dress in the first place - but Britney just makes it look 100times more hideous. She really disgusts me.

And still, i don't see why Tom Ford made such a huge fuss out of Ms. Beckham wearing his clothes because she is a FASHION ICON!

And i totally agree about Spencer and Heidi. Somebody kill the both of them right now!

OH god the horror...
that's just wrong for someone like her to wear a dress like that. I think her music's fine, but her stylee, its horrendous. I mean it looks like a painted sack on her, she's a bustier girl so this dress really was a bad choice.
i give my heart out to tom ford, i mean you want your clothes to be worn by stylish and sophisticated people, not some skank like victoria.
but i disagree with your list of positive PR. I mean Lindsay Lohan? she has so many missteps in style like she's always TRYING tooo hard. and Paris hilton? she's a mess on heels, i mean she wears Uggs with sweats, that's one negative force to reckon with.

Britney should've put on the turban. It would've saved her the trouble of putting on a wig. I'm surprised Tom Ford thought Victoria Beckham would be bad publicity...but seriously, what SA is going to stop someone from buying something at full retail price? Commi$$ion!

it's hard to tell for sure from the small stills, but look how she's being "handled;" what a nightmare...

Yikes. BS does often scare me with her bad taste in clothing. It's too bad her little sis tries to be like her, too.

Another celebrity that designers should love is Reese Witherspoon. She is so classy and beautiful. That little yellow dress she wore recently was amazing!

so you're saying SOME clothes are only good for SOME people???

well i guess a lot of people would have to walk around naked...

i believe it's the person who make the clothing not the other way around!

britney doesn't seem to be able to pull anything off...

don't mind the dress, but i think that the cut is all wrong for miss b - the sleeveless frock isn't doing anything for her arms or chest

(and i totally agree with the above comment about britney being 'handled' - creepy!)

I think that the Prada dress itself is not the problem...just imagine some hip bohemian type girl wearing it with black ballet flats and a vintage handbag. Any dress would look bad when paired with accessories that look like they belong at Club Libby Lu.

although i'm not a big fan of the dress to begin with, the one britney is wearing is too small for her!
i think this is an example of bad publicity...seeing that, i have no desire to buy the dress
i feel bad for britney, she is probably a totally cool person...but the situations and rep she gets is so pitiful

I noticed the outfit too... I feel like it would be much better without the hat, the boots, and the tacky gold jewelry. And add some tights. I can't stand Britney always bare legged.

Poor Britney, I don't care what people say about her, she's still talented. Maybe with horrible fashion, but we've all got our strong points, haven't we? It's a little unfair to pinpoint Britney and then call Nicole, Mischa, Lindsay, etc. out as if they're all that great either. They may dress great, but how good is the publicity when the clothes is hanging from an almost nonexistent frame (a la Nicole) or on a freakish orange tan (a la lohan)? I know my bias for Britney is blaringly obvious, but I don't care. At least she's trying harder...Prada is better than an all jean ensemble, is it not?

And Tom Ford must be on drugs, Victoria Beckham is ridiculously great publicity, although i must admit, her boobs are looking a little unnaturally perky and her tan a bit too fake.

Oh, and I hate Spencer. But Heidi's to blame too cause you can't be in a bad relationship alone!

I want to be her fashion stylist for free and just improve her image. i don't thinks she's a bad person. She's just a weak person right now...

Have to agree, Britney just doesn't do this dress any justice at all. Money sure can't buy you style.

As for being negative press, you're probably right - very few people can actually move stock and Britney just isn't one of them these days. It's still brand awareness for Prada, but I don't suppose people will buy the dress because they saw it on the likes of Britney Spears.

I couldn't see what was coming next as I scrolled down the page, and I was dying laughing when I saw where the article was going! Poor Britney, she just can't look good anymore no matter how hard she tries! But in terms of PR, what do you think about celebs who get PR through advertising for other things? There's a really cool site that Vera Wang just did with HP (www.hp.com/vera) but it has nothing to do with selling her clothes, it just tells the story of how she came up with next season's theme. Good PR for Vera? Or for HP?

Yes Larissa. You got it. Some clothes are only good for some people. That being said, anyone can wear whatever they want. But everything on earth is not FLATTERING on every body type. Just the way it is. different clothing types are designed for different people. if you have short legs, drop waists aren't your friend. If you have big boobs, babydolls aren't your friend either.

I actually quite like this dress. But Brit's version is a little too small for her and her boobs appear squashed. Why, oh why doesn't she buy things in a size that fits her? She refuses to acknowledge that she's put on quite a few. Still trying to squeeze into sizes that just don't fit her and it makes her look even worse. This dress specifically pulls across the chest and paunches a little under the arms. She has big boobs! She should show them off in something that FLATTERS them. Sense of fashion also includes knowing what fits you. And she has no idea.....
