Wedding Gifts

So next weekend, it is my first cousin's wedding in Sydney. He is the first in my "generation" to get married, so it's kind of big news. Unfortunately I cannot make it to his wedding because I can't take any days off and frankly, there didn't seem to be any point to fly 36 hours to and back for the weekend and spend 12 hours there (as much as I LOVE the excellent seafood in Sydney). So in my stead, I was thinking of sending them a gift. This is my wedding first wedding gift, so here are a few of my ideas (for a couple who has everything, and did not register in any stores- they really should!):
My first thought was to turn to Disney, because they absolutely ADORE Winne the Pooh. Unfortunately I googled up the story and it turns out that there is absolutely no romance in Winnie the Pooh (for maybe 5 seconds, I thought maybe Pooh and the Piglet were a couple, but the I realized that Piglet was a boy- as I'd originally thought), so it didn't seem appropriate to give them a Pooh snow globe. So I'm left with the two snow globes above- you can even personalize the plate! I'm thinking Cinderella, since Mickey and Minnie are an acquired taste. Unfortunately they don't sell these at the store and the delivery cost is the same as the actual globe!
So I tried looking for other super cute couply stuff to get. I quite like this block building photoframe (left). Very clean and meaningful of a relationship, no? And if cutesy is not their thing, there is always a simple personalized silver frame to fall back on (right).
If they actually needed more knick knack around the house, I thought these rabbit design kitchen ware were kind of cute (left). And I love these modern looking vases (right)!
And a bit outside the box, there is this cute pair of pillow cases with a bride and groom (left)! Isn't it adorable? Has anyone seen the pillow cases of a couple and it's connected with a string? That is super cute too. Or more practically, you can always get them stock certificate for shares in Tiffany or other companies. They apparently sell them framed on gift.com.

Maybe I'll go back to the globes. You'd think it should be easy to find super sweet couply gifts online....apparently not. Any other cute wedding gift ideas? What do people generally give to other people on their weddings? Tips on what to write inside the card would also be appreciated. Is it congratulations and best wishes? I remember vaguely on Gilmore Girls that it is congrats to the groom and best wishes to the bride?

Gilmore Girls immediately came to my mind, when Emily reprimanded Luke for telling her congrats. Since in our culture, it is the groom who proproses, and the bride who accepts or rejects his proposal, the groom is congratulated that he got accepted, and the bride is wished well with her choice of husbands.

"Congratulations and best wishes on your special day, I wish you every happiness in the future."

I'd go with the snow globes. Very sweet.

A few of my favorite gifts that we got where:

1. A set of Vintage toasting glasses with a bottle of champagne - the card read that the glasses where full of wonderful memories that would welcome the addition of ours. We use the glasses whenever something awesome happens in our lives.

2. A picnic basket with all the "stuff" in it. We've taken this with us on so many weekends.

3. An electric photo frame - we put our honeymoon photos in it when we got home and since then we've added all kinds of great pictures to it.

Hope it helps :-D

I adore the block photoframe, it is incredibly unique as well as not being a traditional wedding gift. I suppose, according to their combined "taste", the modern looking vases are wonderful, too.

i would suggest avoiding cutesy or knick knacks .. when i got married the best gifts were ones i could use for years to come. the modern vases perhaps, champagne or wine glasses, decanteur, or the stock certificate is a great idea.

a lot of people gave cutesy or knick knacks and over time they've mostly ended up in the closet .. like gilmore girls when lorelai puts all the gifts from her mother in the attic

my sister's go to wedding gift is champagne flutes from tiffany's. everyone loves that they're from tiffany's and they're not that expensive - you can get 2 for $50-60.

I alway feel like the best gift for a wedding is something that the couple will keep for a long time.... nice vases, champagne glasses, or if you can afford it crystal or silver or artwork. Practical gifts like a picnic basket are also nice if you know the couple will use them. You want to avoid anything knickknacky or not useful - they probably won't acutally use those pillowcases and the snowglobe will eventually get thrown in a closet or tossed away. Ditto on those housewares gifts everyone registers for - that espresso machine and the ice cream maker end up gathering dust in a drawer somewhere. I'd go for the vases or the stock certificate or something similarly enduring. When my friend got married I went to Macy's and looked in the crystal/silver wedding gift section for something i could afford. I ended up getting her a really beautiful glass vase that she diplays in her living room to this day.

Well some of my favorite gifts were those digital picture frames (you can even put pictures in beforehand if you have any) and candle sets. I also really wanted someone to preserve my bouquet and boutonniere for us.. they have those places where you like send it in and they use some chemical. It's cool. I didn't have time to arrange it myself, it was kind of last on my list, but I wish I had.

Personally I love the idea of something that can be personalised. Probably the photo frame would be my choice.

I'd like to add my voice advising AGAINST knick-knacky stuff like the snow globe. For our wedding we got a tacky 'couple' little sculpture that we had no idea what to do with.
Picture frames are always nice, as we (like all couples I'm sure) generated a lot of photos from our wedding and reception. Another way to go about it is to buy something sort of 'small' but really good quality. Gorgeous cloth napkins, for instance.
Good luck!

I second the Tiffany champagne flutes, or for a more contemporary style, these:

i think best gift for a couple who already has everything could be a dinner (for only two of them), spa-day or something hear warming = charity (Unicef, red cross etc.). Those never go out of style, and at least they wouldn't have to return it/ watch it for the next 10 years if they dislike the gift.

I think you should give them money (in a red envelope, of course!!). Especially since you're sending it to them, add a really nice card or something.

I guarantee you that is the best gift.

A snow globe is nice but it doesn't help people start their life together.

Oh yes! Money! I ♥ getting money as gifts for any occasion. even if it's $50. Especially for my Wedding. We now have a down payment for a home! Or maybe you can find out where they are having their honeymoon and book them a couples massage at their hotel.

I support the idea of giving them money, but if you really want to give something, I'd say give the vases. They're practical and pretty. One gathers a lot of random objects in ones life, this could be practical and whenever someone asks, they can say it was from you!

I second (or third?) the digital frame idea. That's one of my favorites from a list of wedding presents. I'd stay away from anything "couple-y" too. We got a Lladro bride and groom figurine. We figured it would get dated in a couple years and no longer worthy of display so we traded it for a nymph. =) Cash is always good too, can't go wrong with that. I think vases are useful, but only if you know they'd appreciate modern stuff. Maybe they're into antiques? Speaking of which, I had a friend who would scour antique stores for old silver and purchase that as a wedding present.
Have fun shopping for a present!

Seriously, don't give them some knick knack like a snowglobe for a wedding present! As a recent bride myself, I can say that our most appreciated presents will be useful for a long time, like very nice pots and pans, china, crystal, etc. Anything kitsch really isn't appropriate. Our most loved presents, however, are ones that our talented friends made us, like pottery and carvings.

Seriously? That's what you're considering for a wedding gift? Please stick to fashion. Your taste in other items is tacky.

I completely agree with gigi, small things with good quality are a good gift and also will be easier to ship. Cloth napkins are a great idea. If you must get something humorous, I suppose you could get Alessi things. Useful + cute. I don't know anybody who wouldn't be happy to see those. If I was getting married I wouldn't want snowglobes that didn't go with my decor.

I'd like to add my voice to the chorus begging you NOT to buy them some tacky little cute thing. We got all sorts of well-meaning gifts that were so far from our tastes that they just went straight to the Goodwill shop. Get them something simple and classic. Money totally counts as simple and classic, and a wedding is almost the only occasion where it's not sort of tacky to give money.

Best wedding gifts aren't the ones that you spend most on, but whether they match the recipients personality and come from your heart. For example during my colleagues wedding I gifted 1BIL runescape gold to the couple and they were so happy to receive it, so they could play the game together.
