Elegant or Prom?

My mom recently came back from a wedding in Sydney and she got me a dress. On the phone she made it sound really fabulous, "it is a evening dress in a pale sea green color, that goes just below your knees with a matching shawl/scarf. Everyone, even your dad, thinks it is very elegant and gorgeous!" It never occurred to me that I'd want a pale green dress, but seeing as it IS Christmas, maybe it'll be just the thing for a Christmas party!
When I first laid eyes on it, my first reaction was PROM DRESS. The whole pastel color and the jewels at the bodice, with the length ....you got to admit, it's a bit prom like. If not prom like, then at least bridesmaid like. Or just... kind of old (esp with the matching shawl). Don't get me wrong. I love my mom for remembering me on her holiday and buying be stuff out of the blue. I DO know how lucky I am and I do appreciate the gesture. And as much as I am complaining now, I will probably end up wearing it. This is just not something I'd pick on my own... I'd probably pick something more vibrant with funkier jewels, more modern. As an economist, I'm always thinking about opportunity cost.

Having stared at it for quite some time now though, I'm starting to come around to it a bit. The pale sea green color and simple bodice design can be considered as goddess-like and elegant. And while it is not modern, I guess it is classic. I can't go too wrong in a classic dress, right?

The right pair of shoes would probably help.

I agree with Aromy. A spectacular pair of shoes would help immensely. Maybe a belt around the waist and a long cardi could make it a little more casual? I feel as if the scarf definitely adds to the "prom" feel of it...

i'd lose the shall, but the dress is definitely workable! With the right accessories, I think it has great potential :)

I also feel as if the length is kind of tricky....I can't wait to see what you do with it!

P.s. it definitely has that greek goddess feel ;) Athena'ish

i would def. lose the shawl and if you can...shorten it? the length is very prom like. other than that it's really cute.

Gorgeous! Reminds me of Marchesa. Your mom has great taste! I think it is quite sophisticated for a prom dress, but it could work for that and many other black tie type affairs - congrats!

I think it's gorgeous! Classy and elegant, it reminds me of something they'd wear in the 1920s.

Look at it as an blank canvas.

Hem or pin the bottom of the dress to make it appear like a bustier and let it trail (your own desired length) at the side to keep the goddess look in touch. Forget the scarf, layer on some dark black silver chains and pearls...Finish off with a legging jean (a faded grey or charcoal wash...like the ones from current/elliot) or leather skinnies. ;)

That would be my way.

I love the dress, very grecian. Just add lots of bangles to modernise the dress(and draw the attention away if you arent so keen on it). I agree, definately lose the shawl and statement heels would finish the look perfectly. : )Good Luck with it!

i think it's lovely! it's just the shawl that is detracting from the look as it's only appropriate for going to gala dinners etc. looks almost sass+bide from a few years ago back when mischa bardon was still cool! xx

I don't love the shawl - but you could make the dress work! I'd go with lots of metallic accents and a kickass pair of heels.

Is it dye-able? i feel like I would love it if you ditched the shawl and dyed it a deep jewel tone. As it is, the color and beading combination feel very mother-of-the-bride to me.

I def agree with the others about the shawl. Also, great idea to cut a bit off the length to make it less prom-like. A pretty trench and some bold heels: you're good to go! (No jeans!)

I think that kind of dress looks different on different body types.

Anyway, I'd love to see a picture of how you jazzed it up.

Personally, I dislike the dress. But, I'm sure that you'd be able to make it look less... old lady like. :)

I heard these luxury brands are planning to slash prices but it's so chaotic to brave the crowd in the stores. I checked out this site, Worldcharms.com and they offer handbags from Bottega Veneta, Dolce & Gabbana, Juicy Couture, etc. at about 40% off. Some brands up to 70% off!!!! I just don't know how much stock they have left.

Don't go hacking away at it just yet! If you get the right silver bangles (or ooooo, tight, spiraling silver bracelet), and one of those multi-banded headbands, then the length is PERFECT for Grecian goddess. Shorter would make it look definitively adolescent. Definitely use the shawl separately, and not as a shawl.

drop the shawl and wear it alone. i think it's a classic piece.

How about wear it over a black turtleneck with black tights? No? Um, have a tailor gather the shawl into ruffles and attach to the hem. Maybe not, that would be longer and more prommish. Um, does she have the receipt? I don't think this dress is working.... (It's not really that bad though!)

Remove the shawl and wear the highest highest heels.

I would also suggest altering it to make it go above the knee.

lose the shall, wear your hair down in lose waves, and with a headband - a jeweled one that goes accros your forehead, and I would say you're good to go. (along with the perfect pair of shoes of course)
You can work it girl!

p.s.
i also think that you should add a shot of color to the outfit. I would say a shot of a red with blue undertones (not orange undertones!!!!!) but, that might get a little cliche with Christmas upon us. But color would help too!

Don't cut the hem!
:)

The right hair and the right shoes will set off any outfit. Vintage or modern, if you have style you can pull off anything. That dress is classic, like you stated, just rock it out...but do it right.

great post ;)

it's incredible how many people spelt shaWl wrong :) anyway, like them i agree, ditch it. and a the over the knee length is such a mumsy look. again i agree with the whole shortening thing. as for accessorising...well anything (within reason) will work, but if it were me i'd want to steer clear of overdoing the grecian goddess thing, it (imo) seems a little over the top and unnecessary...the dress makes enough of a goddess statement alone, and any more would honestly be too much. i personally quite like the colour as it is, but sea green can wash people out a bit so i wouldn't od on any other pale colours. like others have said a bold pair of statement heels is just the trick. however love the suggestion of dying it a jewel colour. that dress in a vibrant purple or blue would be incredible, provided it were a little shorter. wow i've written a story. enjoy your dress...i'd love my mum to pick me up something glamourous from her holidays...! :D

Hi, to me it looks more like lingerie, but I think that's sexy :) With the proper jewelry it could look really elegant, but yes, you are right - it's not very modern...

I know a lot of people are suggesting that you cut this short so that it's more young, however, because it already has the length, you might consider keeping this in your repertoire as something to wear in a situation that calls for modesty. I personally think it would look adorable on top of a lacy collared shirt with puff sleeves -- very lolita!!

So this is just the kind of dress where I want some sexy jewelry to turn a so-so dress into something outstanding...you don't want to overdo it I agree on that, so forget the shawl and flash em your back with some jewelry there. Get a long necklace and add two pendents, front and back, or try out a bra barrette it should work with that kind of dress.

Hey, if you end up not wearing it, it could be a good Halloween costume. Think roman goddess!

I think that you should totally wear the dress because it's a very classic piece. the shawl makes it too promish though so ditch that. Also wear a pair of heels. The jewlery will make the dress. Because of the pretty v-neck neckling I say no necklace, i'm thinking that a pair of chandelier earrings and big ring. The jewelry can always make an outfit!

Totally either wear it greek goddess style (with forehead-headband) and loose wavy hair, or if you hem the dress, maybe try a bubble hem. It could be a really cute cocktail dress!
