FW08 Winter Hats

Besides the classic newsboy cap, the beanie and the beret, the latest winter hat twist to hit the scene this season are these half hoodies.
I first caught sight of them at Marc by MJ (left) and I thought, "whoa it looks like an oversized turtle neck- without the shirt part," and I didn't know what to think of it. In fact, to be honest I still don't. I thought maybe it is an Marc by MJ abberation and I should just ignore it. But no. It seems to be creeping up a lot more lately on both Shop Bop and Barneys. I mean, it's kind of neat in that it is like attachable hoodie you can put on any outfit you want and it serves as both a scarf and a hat. And with the looser kinds, I guess it does look a bit cool (or not as weird as I initially thought it was). But I think the show a little fringe rule applies here too (I can see myself burrow inside the hood, if I ever got this, with a dark hole as my face). What is everyone's consensus on these?
While I am undecided about the loose hoodies above, I am however very decided about these tighter hoodies. I don't like them. It looks like those ski masks people put over their heads, where you can only see their eyes, except here they widened the hole a bit so you can breathe. It just looks weird- especially as an accessory to an outfit it is not part of. If the model doesn't look that great in this... what are our chances?
Other hats of note. I just couldn't resist putting up this Sophia Costa floral knit beret (left). Even though at this point I have to admit that I am not a beret girl, I must say I love this hat. It just looks so artistic and pretty. I can totally see this on Gossip Girl. And speaking of morphing hat and scarf, I thought I'd throw in this Eugenia Kim combo (right). I think it works! Especially since the design is so simple but feminine. I imagine it would be very convenient to just grab this before you head out the door into the winter cold!
And for something a bit more conventional, I am in love with these two winter hats. The first one is a newsboy cap (left) with a twist, literally. The cap is designed to be on the side. Then there is this Mischa Lampert hat (right) which is simply adorable. Especially with the furry balls at the end. It's so festive! Plus, your ears will definitely be warm!

I'm not convined about the hoodies, but the last two are nice.

Where I live, yeah, it works--beats wrapping a scarf around your head, and it solves the problem of wanting to take your hat off but nowhere to put it, just scrunch it down around your neck for extra warmth.

I agree the small helmet-like hats are odd, but the larger ones remind me of something medieval, which I think is rather cool.

Have yet to try them, but I think I definitely would.

Oh my, I've never seen anyone wearing one of those hoods. I feel like they'd be hard to pull off.

In the 80's as a child I had these in loads of colours as they were very trendy then and called "snoods" everyone could knit them and my mum churned them out in so many colours. You took me back to my happy days thank you

I think the hoods are kinda creative. They remind me of suri's. I think they might be nice with a coat that does not have a hood. On the other hand, hoods usually don't stay up, so I'm wondering how practical this look is...

As for the last two hats, I do not like newboy with a twist hat. The newsboy looks less like a newsboy and more like a knitted bonnet to me - yuck.

Interesting hat alternatives though!

i've lived in malaysia for 13 years of my life before moving to nz and malaysia has a lot of muslims. and muslim women wear headscarfs that look like the hats in the pictures. except these are knit and muslim women use silk scarves but the concept is pretty much the same. i think i'd rather wear a cap and a scarf separate. hehe :D

The last 2 are just adorable. I imagine the hoods would be so comfy and cozy in a very cold country, but without a blizzard going on they might look a bit ridiculous, the look reminds me of a snail peeking its head through its shell.

i LOVE the first ones - are they called "snoods" or is that something else? and I really like the hat/ long scarf combo....it all reminds me of a hood thing i have kicking around somewhere...might need to dig that out!

the first couple of half hoodies might be a little hard to pull off. they're neither hoods nor scarves and sort of end at an odd point across the chest. i just found some great mini hooded cloaks that are like scarves that I posted about ;p they might be easier on the eyes...
really like the winter hats though!

Those marc head covers are questionable. I say, if you WANT to look like a medieval knight, good for you. Just make sure you are able to save yourself from the fashion dragon when the time comes to defend your designer honour.
The marc head covers will probably end up being the next Birkenstocks or Crocs. Ugly but efficient.

The last two sets of hats are sensible AND style appropriate.

I am undecided about this style of hat/scarf as well. However, I do feel it's quite unique and would be very warm considering I live in such a cold climate (Canada). I work in Retail and have never seen anything like this before so it is original to me!

Those half hoodies are used to be called balaclavas. I remember buying a few from Filippa K a few winters ago. And if I'm not wrong, Alexander McQueen used used them in his Fall 2007 show. For men that is...

They're really comfy and works well just as a scarf too.
