Britain's Next Top Model

The cult of America's Next Top Model seems to be ever growing. A simple search online for "top models" yields results for Australia, Britain, Thailand and probably a lot more if I keep on searching. I recently managed to get my hands on a few episodes of Britain's Next Top Model, and I must say, they must not be very well funded! I was quite disappointed. Where to start. . .

YES, houses! While America's Next Top Model gets to live in a house in Beverly Hills, especially designed for them to resemble a department store with themed bedrooms. .

Britain's Next Top Model gets to live in a spacious and very simply but chic-ly designed apartment with one room as living quarters filled with metal bunk beds. Not exactly up to the ANTM's standards. Although I do understand the London is very cramped and all, I'd like to point out that when it was held in New York they stilled lived in very awesome places with funky designs and more rooms. Maybe its the British stlye, who knows?

The photoshoots didn't seem very well equipped either, with very cramped make shift work space and well. . utter chaos. Not quite the well organised chaos we are used to seeing on ANTM.

The photos itself were not very impressive either. The models usually all have a very united theme, wearing very similar clothes and posed behind very simple backgrounds. Not very exciting at all- as you can see from this model's expression.

This one has waaay too much intensity. She just looks downright mean. And I'm must say, this outfit does not look very flattering on her. She's definitely not doing anything for me. *yawns*

This is actually one of the most interesting photos they have. And the judges actually said it was good! For me, so used the ANTM, this photo lacks intensity and connection with the audience. Still not tempted to buy that outfit.

Speaking of which, the judges themselves are pretty dull as well. Their comments were repetitive, dull and so not funny. They need to find a balance between serious and fun. Otherwise, its just boring. As if the show itself was not dragging enough, they add another 40 minutes afterwards devoted to the evictee! And if that is still not enough to put you to sleep, they have another 20 minutes devoted to confessions. That ought to do the work. Although personally I've not needed to watch the confessions in order to fall asleep. The evictee story really does the trick ;).

It makes me wonder what the quality of the show in the other countries are like.

I watched it and didn't think it was too bad. It could be because I like English accents. I can't believe they already voted out the girl who I thought looked most model-like in photos though.

I just saw this last night and was struck by how poorly it was done as well -- they had all these "celeb" guys visiting them, from Coronation Street? That's like inviting Ridge from the Bold and the Beautiful onto the US version!

BNTM is not nearly as exciting or glamorous as ANTM - the only glam thing about it was watching Marie Helvin !!! As for Lisa Butcher trying to emulate Tyra Banks - well that will NEVER happen. The girls were 'seriously' bitchy with each other and some were just not model material at all. I was surprised by the choice of finalists actually - some clearly not cut out to be models. Can't wait to watch the next series of ANTM, sorry, but the British version is just... well... boring !! Hope Jennilee wins tho....

Hi, I love this show and watched the american and australian versions...i dont think that lisa butcher is as good as tyra! I think we could have come up with some much more origional challanges...just because we are not in America doesn't mean we have to suck! anyway i think Lucy should win...hopefull she will and i can't stand Edwina!!

hey, its hard for us Brits! ANTM is a lot better and Lisa Butcher is like a plank of wood (never even heard of her before BNTM) but its still addictive and the next best thing we have as a substitute for ANTM! don't be mean, us Brits can be just as stylish...
ps - LUCY WON!! :)

Just to say that I was not very happen about the decision made on this week British next top model. I sat on my sofa and watched and I really thought Edwina should have won it this about colour or is it about really winning. She was the star of the catwalk eveyone I spoke to was shook that this beautiful talented young lady did not won. Get your facts right.

I was extremely disapointed and suprised, that Lucy won the BNTM,as I realli thought Edwina was going to win, cause it is so
obvious that Edwina is the
'Queen of Catwalk' and i still do think she'll go Far!regardless of being let Down by the Judgess (and the Rest of BNTM production team!)who clearly only let Lucy win, cause she's blue eye and blonde. Regardless of not realli HAVING THE Stigma that Edwina has as A Rock Supermodel.
the truth is Edwina did not win because of her colour, and its realli Sad that shows like these dont show otherwise, once again it just demosnatrates that people from ethnic minorities will always have barriers in the western societies. Realli, when are these conflicts going to end?
once again, these types of shows will discourage people from ethnic minority not to take part, as they'll already know the results.
i for one will not watch the 2006,and i know with everyone else who aggress with me will probabli not.in particular, people from ethinc minorities.
So, you should realli re-question
of what your reali trying to achieve when making these type os shows?

I loved the show. It was a great contrast to the American version and if you look at the first series of ANTM it is a bit ropey.

BNTM are making a second series at the moment and they are looking for new girls to apply.

Why the hell bring up the racism card because Edwina didn't win? Is it to say that if she'd won, every white person would be like "its gotta be because of her black skin" not everything has a conspiracy behind it! and definatly not BNTM. ON another note, the show was pretty crap, why does england always suck at good things. and why does america always put us to shame! They could at least actually have a cool rolemodel as the hopst instead of lisa butcher-bloody plastic surgery advert! I think kate moss would be great as the host, even though she isn't a great role model-she's cool! haha anyway i still love the show!

I have to admitt, after seeing ANTM, Im a bit disappointed. Considering I live in England, so Im not being biased. Im not sure of all of there names yet, but I do know Anne. The judges seem to love her, aparently she has character. I agree she does but its not the right character, shes just plain weird looking. The first one to go was the prettiest (bar Lucy), despite the fact she looked a bit cutesy I think she could have worked. I really hope Anne goes. Or is she called Annie. I dont know, shes how much of an impression she had on me.

HEEEEEEEY! Just want to get my voice out, I think a few of us girls were disappointed after actually seeing ourselves on TV, although the show was predictable it was very raw, it was like watching a home video and a Kodak picture taken by your mum! however i have to be fair and be considerate that i can only assume the first show had to of been an experiment, and one which had a lower budget than usual! And lets face it whenever anyone ever does something for the first time its more than likely that you don’t get everything *right*. However this is why im firm in believing that this second series will be MUCH BETTER!
Also in response to the myspace comment was posted by Cassy, That IS my myspace (www.myspace.com/edwinadiva) and yes its the internet but it is no fake trust! Ill try and post a *real life* picture up there as well lol

Remember reality TV is not really reality!

I actually thought most of the models in BNTM looked far more healthy and diverse than those in ANTM. They had a mixture of sizes, shapes, and personalities, and some went quite far even though they weren't "traditional" catwalk model shape. Too many of the ANTM contestants look like Barbie clones to me. Anyway, I was really impressed with all of them, I wouldn't have been that brave at 20 years old or so. Well done Lucy!

At least Lisa and the other judges seemed to really care about the girls and their development. Tyra's come across as increasingly cruel during the last few seasons of ANTM. In ANTM you often see them breaking the girls down psychologically or emotionally, like when she eliminated both girls and then said "just kidding".

Still dont' understand why they bother with girls under 5'8".

Congrats Lucy, glad you won!

I definitely agree with you where you say the photos themselves weren't very impressive.
I have taken a look on the LivingTV Britain's Next Top Model galleries, and almost every photo from the shoot lacked intensity and shown a lack of excitement and life in the photos.

I'm a little confused here...yeah...it's not difficult ;) All the comments I have seen here so far refer to season one of BNTM so is no one apart from me watching season 2 ? Lisa Snowdon is much better as a host. Not quite a Tyra but I can't think of anyone who could match her in the UK at the moment.

The other thing I'd like to bring up is photographers. It seems to me after watching season 1 and three episodes of season 2 is that we see the girls doing some great poses on tv yet the photographs are mostly pretty much rubbish? The fashion industry ought to get a grip and get back in touch with the public because I'm pretty sure if you asked the public to choose one shot for each model it would not be the one's they show on tv.

Hello.
Just wanted to have my say.
I think that Judges and models on BNTM where brilliant. And not being funny they are the ones making the money from the programme and all the girls have had a life changing experiance. All the girl are gorgeous thats why they got picked.. so what if there pictures are "dull" thats how they where ment to come across. Not birght and bouncy.

I love all the "next top model" series.. i think that they open new poserbilitys for young girls..

Regarding Lisa Butcher - she won the first British Elle modelling competition back in 1987 (I remember it well as I was at uni at the time and used to buy Elle) and went on to be quite successful, though she was never really up there with top British models like Naomi or Kate.
But I guess they thought as she knew first hand what it was like to win a model contest and go on to do well, she'd be good. I didn't find her awful, but she wasn't all that charismatic either.
I only really know of Lisa Snowdon from her dating George Clooney. She's more lads mag than fashion so I'm not sure she's right for it either, though she's got more personality.

You americans are just jealous that we British have better tv programs than you (that isn't actually true but whatever). Don't insult BNTM it is fab. Lisa Butcher is great and, yeah the girls aren't so great but that's what makes the program interesting. Stop insulting our tv because you have nothing better to do. >:(

I think it's unfair when they give a girl an outfit & a set, the photographer says 'do this, do that', then the judges say 'what a boring picture, I don't like your leg/foot, skirt etc etc. Most of the time it's not the girls fault. On one series of ANTM they put a girl with big eyes & a large mouth in a horrible hairstyle & outfit, made her look like Olive Oyl, then tore the pics apart.

I totally agreed with what u've commented. BNTM lacks so much in the show itself. It has nothing much to offer to the viewers. Especially when it comes to e photo shot, the models all looked dull and boring. I don't see any meaning in this competition. Everything tat happens in BNTM is easily forgettable. The judges are atrocious, people from fashion industry shld know how to dress professionally. By looking at the way they dressed, it seems they don't respect the show. They shld know a difference btw a casual wear and a formal wear. They are all mixed with whatever tat doesn't match. The whole conset of e whole is very very disorganised. There shld not be any comparison btw ANTM and BNTM because with the stronger and larger crowd of viewers frm ANTM, it is already a winner. ANTM leaves the fans wanting more... sadly, BNTM didn't accomplish this mission. by counting the number of hits on ANTM and BNTM in youtube, the answer is pretty obvious. I hope the show develops and learn frm its mistake. There is always room for improvement... chao...

omg. ifyou actually think that it is that boring..dont watch it!
i personally love it, britain, america, australi wherever, its all the same!
all of the girls must have something special to actually get that far,and i dont see how people can say they were let down by the team, idont see how it is different from americas next top model...

I hated that they judged the models on their behavior in the house and not just on their performance. In ANTM Monique was a bitch but she wasnt eliminated or in the bottom two for those reasons. When they placed one of the girls in the botton two for her bad attitude towards the other contestants i was pissed.

And I really think Edwina should have won. She walked perfect to me. Lucy looked like and Abercrombie model, sure but she walked like a man trying to walk like a woman. like a stick was up her butt.

I am a professional, well educated adult female and I LOVE all the NTM series. Each reflects the individual characteristics of the society. I love watching the make overs, and the artistic flair captured in the photographs. I also become more beautiful through osmosis as I learn styling tips, watching the contestants.

As for comparisons/contrasts between the shows, Australia;s host is very cruel and the judges are callous. I found them quite unprofessional. The girls were incredibly aggressive, bitchy, and overly sexualized. I was shocked they were filmed bare chested. Yuck. I was rooting for Jessica. What an usual look. I thought she could easily be a screen siren, perhaps representing an aristocrat. One of the judges said she had an "expensive" niche look and I think that is entirely true. Her look wasn't off a typical glamorour girl so I didn't expect her to win, but that with her personality, spunk, and unique look will carry her far. You can't help but notice her face. Does anyone know if she is Jewish? She reminded me of a more elegant version of Anne Frank.

Canada had some interesting shoot, but lacked pizzazz and seemed woefully under budget. Not interesting. Mr. Jay even seemeed out of place there.

Britain was interesting. I loved the diversity of their contestants and that they brought on board, some like Marisa, who had great ambitions and intelligence. I am entirely glad Lucy won. As for her "lack of motivation," she seemed to be calm, poised, and to deliver each time. Calm, meticulous, engaging. She had a Martha Stewart-eseque quality about her. I am glad Lianna also won. She was a true professional. Interesting how evil the other women get to the woman who is their competition. I have often faced this on the job, especially from undeveloped women who rely on their beauty/ sex appeal to carry them through life. Whereas I am professional (also classically beautiful, but I don't flaunt my beauty/sex appeal). I also easily outperform on the job and am at the receiving end of mind games, abuse from other females who perceive me as competition. Rather than improve themselves, they resort to stupidity, mind games, bitchyness.

I love ANTM. This show truly is entertaining, and Tyra is the best host ever. I loved Nicole. She was the only winner I was rooting for and whom I believed deserved to win. She is model material

Other winners seemed to be chosen for strange reasons. I liked how contestatns who displayed poor attitudes, unprofesionalism, or who could not deliver in photographs were eliminated. In ANTM, girls with potential but who never delivered were kept on,for example, I could never understand their choices. They seemed to go on favoritism, or to the girl with the most compelling story (who would therefore be more marketable--not as a model, but as a "personality.") Eva has been the most successful ANTM yet, and yet she is not model material. She is an actress. Nicole is still going strong, but the others have just faded into oblivion.

I believe the show is really about profits for the fashion industry and show's creators. It is also geared at boosting profits for make up/fashion companies and at brain washing the female audience into thinking that with the right make up and clothes, they took can be "top model" material. Lets face it, the show is about transformation, and most contestants look pretty average. It is about selling a "fantasy," and a mentality.

Also, and finally, another question occurs to me....if they can build professional modeling campaigns around the average girl on the street, how do top models justify their paychecks? Do you really notice an ad or buy a product based on face recognition or its overall image (which any number of millions of individuals could help sell.)

I am a direhard fan of ANTM.Great, interesting show.

i do have to say britain's next top model isn't as catty/flamboyany and well organised as Americas, but we have way more diverse wannabe-models. And i have noticed in Americas that Tyra Banks comes off extremely fake in the judging and one to ones with the models.

I do agree Britain does need to work on its act, tidy it up. However, after skim reading a comment made on british humour i find that hilarious. The only funny character on America's next top model is Mr.J, someone please make him the man judge and not Tyra. She TRIES to be funny which is terrible, we enjoy naturally funny!
