Dealing with Old Magazines

Recently I’ve been busy reorganising and packing all my stuff because my family is moving. So after I reorganised and threw away MANY things (like old stationary, letters, catalogues, documents etc.) I got to the magazines. The question is should I chuck them away also?

The old magazines I am talking about are mainly British Vogues from the past two years, Teen Vogues since it started and a few random issues of magazines I deem as ‘special’: the last ever issue of The Face, a few Japanese Seventeen (not that I know how to read Japanese), two thick September issues of US Vogue, the first ever issue of Chinese Vogue, and the Gemma-edited issue of Australian Vogue of course.

I’m usually not very sentimental about old things that I don’t use anymore. If something is totally useless and doesn’t represent a huge phase of my life, I would throw it out without thinking much. I am planning to keep the special issues of magazines and Teen Vogues, but I am still debating about the old British Vogues. I mean, it’s unlikely I’m going to be rereading those any time soon. But I’m really hesitant to get rid of them because the editorials (and some ads) are just SO pretty. Remember the July 2005 ones with Lily Cole? Sigh, the dilemmas a fashion editorial junkie faces…

I'm curious, do YOU usually keep your old magazines? For how long and which ones?

Btw, reorganising and throwing useless old things away is a lot fun and VERY satisfying. Do try it out!

I know what you mean about throwing things out! I just cannot keep everything for a long time. A packrat I am not!

Anyways, about the magazines...

I would tear out the pretty pictures and articles that interests me and throw away the magazine after that.

Anddd... if I like a magazine in its entirety, I'd keep it.

I keep mags for about 6 months unless they're special for some reason... When I do my magazine 'purge' I go through each one (takes hours!) and tear out the pictures I love and put them in an inspiration binder. I have a 2 inch thick binder filled with beautiful images and outfits that i love to look at. I highly reccomend this! It's so much more practical than keeping all the mags and so much less painful than throwing them all away!

Keep the ones with stunning covers or what you think may define our time now. I have a nice collection now of magazines from the 90's that are fun to look back on as a piece of fashion history, especially at that time w/ the age of the supermodels. But its all about the cover.

of course i'd keep them! I have a wall of magazine archives in my study and they are fabulous. I always refer back to them, those photoshoots and editorials are not meant to be thrown away! get yourself some pretty magazine boxes and save them!

Poor you! I always chuck them as soon as the new issue arrives, so I don't have to go through the get-rid-of-it-all process.

I'm with KatseyJ, I go through all of my mags once a month and cut out my favorites pictures and editorials and then I put them in my fashion binder. Then some of my classic mags I keep because as a whole the magazine was just so beautiful.

I have a question, which issue of Austrailian Vogue was Gemma edited? I love her so much and want to see if I can get it on back issue. Thank you.

I have scrapbooks of cuttings from fashion magazines dating from the 90s to the early 00's, at the height of my magazine hoarding phase. I do keep some copies which I really like or are specia editionsl - I have the 2005 Lily Cole issue too, as well as the Brit Vogue Gold issue from 2000.

YES omg keep them. magazines are such an impt part of fashion history. i agree its practical to tear out your fav editorials and ads but in a few years time reading the mags in its entirety always gives you interesting a fresh perspective on current trends and styles and really makes you appreciate how far (or not) things have come. show some magazine love!

i've pretty much kept all my magazines; however, i sometimes cut them up to make collages, tear out the pretty pages to post somewhere or stack them as a bit of room decor. you're right, clearing out junk is very satisfying! good luck with deciding what to do with your magazines!

I keep British/French Vogue and i-D etc but otherwise I throw them all out. I read British Vogue again and again and again! When I left London temporarily I put all my Vogues in a carboard box and put them into storage so that when I come back I can read them over.

By all means keep them! I still have a 1986 Vogue issue of Naomi Campbell. These are all part of our fashion evolution. Cheers!!!

I have a huge problem with that as well, though mine are a lot less special being magazines like B, COSMOgirl! Sugar and Bliss. Obviously keep the important ones, and for the others flip through them and see if there are any interesting articles you may want to come back to in a month or two. If not, chuck 'em!

i've kept pretty much all of mine, but i threw out the unimportant ones like cosmogirl and a few boring seventeeens. i keep all my vogues and teen vogues tho. but i definitly would recommqand tearing out all the ads/spreads u like and keeping them in a binder of sorts.

You should really keep them if you're even thinking about it.
You're probably gonna have a sudden urge to really see one of the lovely magazines you threw away.

And I loveee Lily Cole. Definately don't throw that one away. I drew the NARS ads that had her in it for art class. She really does have a unique face.

It's not that I don't want to keep the magazines, it's just that I have very limited space in my room and don't really have the space to put them. I am at the moment keeping the British Vogues until I totally run out of space.

If you're running out of space, get a magazine rack or some box files to keep them in and stick them on some shelves or underneath your bed if you have any space under there.

Ahh, I'm so attached to my magazines I can't ever think of throwing them (which will probably be bad for me later in life since it'll take so much room). I can't even rip pages out and put them on my wall - I'm such a mag junkie.

But anyways, take a look through all the magazines that you're "thinking" of throwing away. Scan through the images and the articles. If it's only for the images, just tear them out and keep them in a folder. If it's for the whole magazine itself then just keep it.

I throw all weeklies except Grazia, and keep most of my glossies and imports. I have six huge boxes on my bedroom floor at my parents house full of magazines, plus plenty more in a cupboard and in a big pile in my new house. I really need to throw them away!

I even still have back issues of Looks magazine (which folded 5 years ago).

I agree with many of the other people--i'd say get rid of the boring old issues and cut out favorite pictures/ads/spreads and put them in a notebook, that's what I've been doing.

I also want to thank the first commenter--your idea of putting covers and ads on your wall is a really good idea! I am going to do that when I move into my new place (haha, dorm) this fall!

I kept my old Vogues until I moved, when I realized that they are *way* to heavy to shlep around. I do keep my IDs though.

You may consider keeping the issues that are most special to you and donating the rest - I take my month-old issues to the gym regularly, and I've also donated to places like shelters for abused women or run-away teens... It's better than just chucking them and it solves your problem.

However, if you really want to get rid of them you can sell them to collectors. I did a small research a couple of weeks ago and the price range for past vogue issues is from $7.50 to 95$ !!! I just threw out a bunch of fashion magazines yesterday and somehow I'm starting to regret it. I would love to keep a part of fashion history with me, so I've started a scrapbook and will keep all my favorite covers and ads in it. Perhaps one day I'll pass it on to my daughter ;)

I chose to read all my Vogues again to keep the ones that I love. It's taken me months but it's a labour of love. I've thrown silly faddish issues on Reality Shows, swimsuits et al. But, for American Vogue, I keep editorials by Carine Roitfield that still look remarkably stylish. I fiercely regret throwing away my 1st Vogue, a gigantic 1996 Sept issue. The thing is, style is truly eternal, looking back at the issues devoted to Prada's 40s look (remember the tie-on fur necklets?) still inspire. Someday when you need new ideas, or wish to redecorate your room, your old Vogues might have the solution.

I kept all my Seventeen magazines from the early 90's thinking (at the time) that if I had a girl one day, she would like to read them and laugh at mommy's style. As I haven't "settled down" and instead became a fashion editor (funny the way the world works) I went back through the crate at my mom's house last Christmas. Overall the result was pretty boring. The layouts look really old now. Some of the ads are funny but my advice is to chuck the teen mags after you tear out everything you think you might want in a year.

I do NOT toss my US Vogues, though I do toss the UK copies after tearing out editorials and info I might want. Same with all other mags. I keep the informational stuff (new designers, cool shops, etc.) in one place and the picture content in a stack of growing folders. Go through the info stack from time to time as you'll see that info gets dated pretty quickly as well. Don't throw out the photos. You'll need them someday.

Find the room for the mags you want to keep (in your case UK Vogue). It's ONLY 12 issues a year...find somewhere to tuck them. The back of kitchen cabinets works for me until I get a larger flat. :-)

I'd say keep the Chinese Gemma issue too- it'll buy you an outfit in a couple of years time! I also have all the British Vogues from the last couple of years (every one since January 2004) and have even recently taken to buying old issues (I now have all the issues from 2000 including the collector's gold issue and all the issues from 1998). I think if you have the storing space somewhere, keep them. They are a great log of the ongoing history of fashion and I imagine looking back on them in years to come will be great. I, like you am a lesser collector of other international issues, when I can buy them and have a good number of US and French Vogues. I'm just a junkie. If you do have to get rid of them, don't throw them away, put them on eBay. There are a lot of people out there that love to get their hands on Vogues! It would be such a waste to just throw them out! Ben.x
