Packing Troubles

Normally I am a brilliant packer. This is not because I’m a super-organised person, but simply because I’ve had loads of practice. One of my very few talents is that I’m very good at packing only the necessary things, and not packing the ‘what if I need it’ things. So here I am, packing to go to the States tomorrow and I’m actually having trouble!

You see, the problem is that I have to pack for three places and too many different activities. I’ll be going to New York, Boston and San Francisco, so that means I’m going to need:

- Nice clothes, shoes and bag for nice dinners in NY.- Sneakers to tour colleges (for my sister). You didn’t think I was going to walk around colleges in heels, did you?- Pretty, comfortable shoes (like low wedges, low-heel sandals or kitten heels) to visit pretty, indoor places, like shops and museums.
- About 10 outfits, since I can wash some of them in San Francisco at my aunt’s house.
- A travel set, which needs to be big enough for 2 weeks, of oh-so-important colour-protecting shampoo and conditioner.

-See the Jane blog about my skincare products.

Oh my gosh, I don’t think I’ve ever brought more than 2 pairs of shoes when I travel. Nor have I ever brought that many beauty products. This is going to be seriously a lot of hassle. Hmm, I think blogging this down actually helped me get a clearer picture of what to pack. Now I have to go do the actual packing. And I still haven’t finished my list of what-to-buy yet!

I'm one of those what-if packers. It takes me a handbag and a large suitcase to pack for four days! Don't get me started on how much I pack when it's a skiing holiday. Not only are there millions of clothes to layer up to keep me warm, there's the scarves, gloves, the helmet and those HUGE ski jackets and sallopets (or however you spell it)

Oh please share your "what-to-buy-in-Usa-list"! Am, going there myself soon and need inspiration, especially interested in skincare- and beauty products that are not available in Europe...

Thanks!

Ballet flats are a good idea, but I surprisingly don't own any. I only have ballet low wedges.

My US To-buy list so far consists of Bare Essentials (for me and BG), Stila duo blush, Terax Crema and magazines. I really can't think of much myself!

you sound like me when i go over to Europe! Boston is BEAUTIFUL right now so pack for simplicity. You definately don't need to pack too much clothing. I was in Boston about a month ago and walked everywhere in flip flops for god sakes! Granted, it was hot and I don't really care but don't stress. No one really pays attention to what you are wearing.

i live in boston- here and new york, prepare for heat and rain! you *cannot* wear heels in boston, because of our cobblestoned and bricked sidewalks. the toes and heels will be scraped up and ruined after about an hour of walking. be weary of sandals in the heat, too- you will get blisters. remember that in the northeast, it gets very, very humid, so prepare for stickiness and frizzy hair. drink plenty of water and do not get on the subway on a day that the red sox are in town! you will not have a pleasant experience.

2 weeks, omg, it'd be such a pain to pack! when i go away for 3 days i pack maybe 2 jeans, 4 tops, a jacket and thats pretty much it (well and probably a scarf also depends on what time of the year it is). i'd carry a tote that looks great with most of the stuff i bring with me (so i dont need to pack more bags). well if you are going to fancy dinners and stuff, pack a clutch also cos it doesnt take up too much space and it looks great with your little evening number :)

i put my skincare in those travel-size jars and fit them all in one Agnes b toiletries bag. i'll also take another toiletries bag with me that consists of contact lenses, cleanser, exfoliator, toothbrush/paste, shower gel, shampoo & conditioner- all in travel size. and of course i'll never forget my beloved Bobbi Brown makeup case thats filled with all the makeup i need!

oh, and last but not least, my straightening iron too! plus a can of travel-size hairspray and im good to go! it sounds like a lot but it actually isnt because most of the stuff is in travel size :):)

for a 2-week trip i guess you can just bring 8-10 tops, 2 dresses, 3 pairs of jeans/shorts/capris, 3 pairs of shoes (flats, heels & not-so-high heels) - just pick the type of clothes that allows you to mix and match a little. thats how i would pack hehe :P

Hi,

pack something convertable like the rachel pally full tie tube dress-- you can wear it as a skirt or many styles as a dress. also, sue london ballet flats, basics like camis, a short, a denim jean, and slacks, and a nice top. . . don't overpack or you'll have no shopping space!

When you're in NYC, check out hot new West Village boutique Castor & Pollux (http://newyorkmetro.com/listings/beauty/castor-and-pollux/index.html)—lots of great indie brands and overall gorgeousness!

I'm a serious what-if-I-need-it packer. Going to New York, I could only bring one luggage piece... and I stuffed it (it was only a four day trip). When I came back I had no place to pack my new buys! Luckily, my dad had space in his luggage that I could use.

Do what my dad did- pack necessities, and buy the rest. If you're in need of a new dress, heels, make-up, leave yours at home and just buy it. That way your luggage will only be full the way back. Plus it gives you an excuse to shop :)

I think the shoe dilemma is my worst issue when packing. I always feel ok pack ing comfortable walking sandals (unless it's January) and a pair of dressy shoes, but the attractive walking shoe dilemma is the most difficult of all, especially when there's a LOT of walking involved. I'm curious to see what you decide.

Oh yay, hopefully my shoe-packing skills will be put to good use for someone else! My advice: Pack one pair of heels that matches all dressy outfits for any nice dinners, etc. Pack one pair of very comfortable, but pretty flats that will work for college tours/ museums, etc. (Forgo the sneakers...esp. if you're only going to be using them for one purpose.) Finally, one pair of sandals - something that can be dressed down or up.

Harrod's Girl, what if you get one of those gel insoles for your low wedges? That way you'll get cute and comfort at the same time. Not sure if your shoes have enough room for that, but at least you don't have to go buy ballet flats (though you'd have a good excuse to do it).

I live in San Francisco, and the weather is really beautiful right now! You picked a good time!

Do you really need sneakers? If you're used to wearing heels a lot it seems like you could get by with your low wedges for touring colleges.

What about thong sandals? They're so easy to pack and so comfortable. If you don't have a good pair, I highly reccomend Rainbow sandals. They're made in Southern California and are guaranteed for life. It's a smaller company, but you can find them at Nordstrom.

You should also check out the Forever 21 at Powell and Market while you're here. Brace yourself though, because it is a shopping experience all it's own. You can find some really cute and trendy items, but the quality is pretty shady. It's great for things you will only wear a few times. You have to really hunt for the good stuff, but it's there! (i feel so clever pairing my F21 tops with $200 jeans and a LV handbag! hehe)

Have a great trip!

I must admit, last time I was in SF, I spent excessive time in the Haight-Ashbury area because of all the adorable shoe stores! I highly recommend it, the neighborhood has gone all upscale and dear Lord, did I love the shoes. Great places to eat, too.
