Forever 21 Summer Dresses

Now that SS08 is upon us (or at least it SHOULD be- I don't understand why it is still so cold!), I really want a very bright and colorful summer dress. Nothing too fancy. Just a simple, colorful jersey dress that I can wear casually to class or whatnot. Preferably a cheap one. What better place to look for one then Forever 21? And so, the other day, I went into the new store on Mag Mile (the one that replaced Virgin Records) to look for one.
At first, I was thrilled. They had lots of simple jersey dresses in a range of super bright colors at really cheap prices (i.e. $10-20)- exactly what I was looking for! So I grabbed as many as my arms can support and went to try them on in the changing room.

NONE of the dresses I tried fit me. I am not by all means, looking for something that fits me perfectly- just something that fits me decently. But still, NOTHING did. I tried on the two dresses above. I know that its a bit low cut, but I figured I can adjust it and maybe wear a lacey spaghetti strap underneath. Unfortunately the chest bit was too loose.
Ok, I can accept that maybe those dresses won't fit me because I have no chest and it will probably fit others better. But then I tried these two above, which really shouldn't require too much of a chest, and they STILL didn't fit. For the yellow one (left), I think the back was too loose. And for the red one (right), it was the chest again. Is it too much to ask for a simple (spaghetti strapped perhaps?), bright, cheap jersey dress that fits ok? How hard can it be?

Maybe, I am just
deformed.

I've had similar problems with Forever21. However, I did try Heritage 1981 (which I believe is the same company) with different results. I bought a sundress for about 20 USD that fit perfectly, and it wasn't super low-cut, either!

i have similar problems with those dresses at f21, so you are not deformed. since the dresses are so cute and extremely affordable, i buy them anyway and spend a few extra bucks to have them altered to fit my frame. I too am on the flat side, so you can have it personally altered to your liking! =)

I do the altering thing, too! Haha. I usually just have the straps shortened or put some smocking at the back or perhaps use a ribbon or something.

Trust me, it's not you. I tried on all the above dresses with the same results. I think they just need to hire better designers...

I have similar problems with my summer dresses. The spaghetti straps are far too loose, because I think they make these dresses nowadays for someone with shoulders a mile wide. The other problem is the torso - being on the short side, for me this means a dropped waistline, which isn't always a good thing.

However, I did make a couple of alterations myself, so if you're willing to muck around a little, you could do that too, if you're fond of the dresses you found. Otherwise, don't give up and keep looking!! There is a perfect summer dress with spaghetti straps somewhere out there for you!

I'm lucky that altering is very cheap here ($3-$5 at the most) because I get 90% of the stuff I buy altered. That includes length of jeans, taking in dresses, shortening straps, slashing long dresses into minis and even buying things 2 sizes too big and have them fit for my size. I too am pretty much flat, so my advice would be take in a little from below the armpits, sew from the inside and voila, you can do it yourself.
Btw, topshop always has the best(perfect) fit in dresses for a petite, slightly curvy, 32B girl like me. But their skinny pants never work.

I love the new Mag Mile XXI. I go there after work sometimes. But it's intimidating! SO FREAKING HUGE!

I think through the years, F21 has changed their sizing to better suit taller Americans who also have bigger frames. F21 used to suit me better, being your typical eastern Asian with a petite frame. Therefore, F21 usually doesn't fit me anymore either. It really sucks, but I think most clothing stores in the US cater to the bigger framed westerners because they are the majority of consumers. =(

I have the one thats on the top right along with three other simple spaghetti top dresses and one short-sleeves cotton dress. they all fit wonderfully. the problem is the quality. 3/5 dresses have been broken in some way by the first time I've worn them. They're so cheap though, so they're pretty much meant for a few times wear and tear.

F21 can be captivating with the bright lights and bright clothes but don't waste your time with cheap stores when you KNOW what you want.

Forever21 are great for disposal pieces. Look for something with a square neck which will give the appearance of substance in the chest area.

I despise F21 for that reason. Their clothes are so cheaply made and never fit properly. For basics I would definitely try somewhere else. In my opinion F21 is only good for super trendy items that will get tossed a month later.

wow i am the exact opposite. I have to buy a couple sizes up and then get the torso taken in because the chest area isn't large enough. i wish i was flatter because clothes look 10x better are girls that are tiny in that area :( plus u don't get stares from perverts if your wearing a plain v-neck t-shirt...

Girls and teens want to look sharp and fashion forward. Latest Fashion Trends change every season, but there are certain basic items of girl’s clothes that everyone wants in their wardrobe. Key pieces can be combined to create many different looks. While denim jeans are a staple in most wardrobes, the style of jeans changes regularly. http://fashiontrendsupermodelingnewdesigners.blogspot.com

I find myself in the same predicament with F21 in the past (and I don't even shop there often since I live in Canada!). I think they're clothes aren't very well made and sort of just made for one size and I bet they change the sizes just a tiny bit and call it a medium or large. Plus since money's the only thing on their mind, they don't care really how it fits. Oh well, you can't really beat the prices. You just have to wait until you get lucky and find something good haha.

Forever 21 doesn't fit unless you have some length or substantial curves (I don't mean big, I mean just a chest and more than a little hippage). At least that's what I've found!!

I have the same problem...except reverse. Everything that fits me perfectly elsewhere is WAY too tight around the girls.

Manufacturers should know by now that people are not evenly proportioned like barbie dolls! Or mannikins.

You are not deformed! You just need to try a different fabric, cut and some pattern. Problem is, jersey dresses are very hard to pull off. I am surprised noone mentioned that. I mean, it is comfy and flowy, but it also, like any plain fabric without pattern will make our broblem areas more visible. Do not give up on Forever21, though. I go there every couple of weeks... I am a F21 addict :) ... however, I always find something that fits me as good as if it were made just for me! The secret is to go out of your comfort zone. A lot of things there NEED to be tried on. A dress that looks iffy on a hanger might fit you so perfectly, everyone will think it was custom made. That is also true for funky patterns and unusual colors. I understand, that I spend literally hours there, and try on like 20 items, but that way I always have success. And! If you are careful and examine your clothing before you buy it, you lower the possibility of having a defected item by tenfold. All of the things I have bought there that way are still in my closet in great condition... except for those darn buttons!!!! :( I have to re-attach those every time, because 30% will fall off after a few try-ons.

Forever 21 has also been accused of stealing designs from high-end fashion brands. Recently, Designer Diane von Fürstenberg has filed a lawsuit against Forever 21 for duplicating her dress designs.

You're not deformed, the dress sizing varies so much with forever21s dresses. It's not you its the way the dress is cut. I have ordered several summer dresses from their website and sometimes I wear the small sometimes the medium.I am very short 4'10 and I am not very busty 34c but sometimes the chest is too small on the small and then the medium will fit me and then the length will be maybe an inch longer on the medium than the small, it's amazing when you have the same dress in two different sizes how much or how little they can vary in size. Now I just order the small and the medium in what ever styles I like and send back what doesn't fit.If the dress is really cute and maybe its a little too big I'll have it altered, most of my clothes need to be altered anyway because I am so short.Just keep trying different cuts and styles and you'll find something that fits you.

There is no such thing as being deformed, it's just that some of us are thinner than others, I think f21 is for very thin girls. I use to just walk in there and grab anything, size small and fit just perfect, now after a baby I got more lumps that f21 cant handle lmol!

I just recently spent 88 dollars at f21 because I needed new clothes for a new job. I thought their stuff was cute for a great price. Well, I won't be buying from them anymore...I wore white skirt with purple flowers yesterday and I got caught in the rain. The colors ran and now it is pink and purple. I haven't tried returning yet but I heard the sales associates aren't too understanding about that stuff. Now I'm nervous the other skirt and dress I have are going to do the same thing. Has anyone else had this problem?

I don't think Forever 21 dresses are made for women over 18, seriously. They're cute on the hanger, and you have to love the price point, but none of their dresses have fit me in years, and I'm not a big girl. Just doesn't make sense.
