SS06 Fashion Don't: Distress Jeans
In class today during an especially dry bit of the lecture, my eyes wandered around in an attempt to stay awake and landed on these ripped cropped jeans that this girl was wearing. And I thought, ugh. Not only is it ugly but its cold! I'm so glad that we're in the seasons of being ladylike and put together with the whole distressed jeans thing out the window. It is just one of the things about fashion that drives me NUTS!
Here is an especially good example of why I don't like it. What were the good people of True Religion thinking? This is just . . . *shudder*
Just a few more examples of ripped/distressed jeans that distresses me. This one by Dolce & Gabanna.
And this one by Elie Tahari. This one doesn't even look flattering on the model. Its like they're trying to be chic and sophisticated with the pointed heels and all, but the oh-so-carefully placed distress just completely ruins it.
And I use the word distressed here to include this monstrousity from Just Cavalli. And to match it with that top! Can we say tacky??

omg, i completely agree with you! ripped jeans are SO out. i'm so ashamed that I actually have a pair, haha. i'm honestly thinking about selling it on ebay, except it'll probably only be worth about $2.16 LOL anyway. i need to save up to buy a great pair of skinny jeans.
I hate ripped and torn jeans too! I suggest checking out the Miss Sixty's from Urban Outfitters, they are dark, super skinny, and have little zippers at the interior ankle, I'm in love with my pair.
what do you think about silkscreened jeans which i've noticed anthropologie has done. (see latest website)
oh my god i toatlly agree, as a high school student i see this every day and i hate it. not only is it ugly, but i can't belive girls are spending 30-60 dollars on ripped pants. it makes me so angry.
ok i'm done now.
I can deal with a little bit of distressing here and there, like at the bottoms and near the pockets, but the True Religion-style distressing was just ugly from the start. Not to mention that their jeans seem to make everyone's butts look huge.
Yes yes, I am like SO sick of seeing people wear ripped jeans. I think only people who wear ripped jeans with that whole carefree look can get away with it looking cool (see MK). Otherwise, it just looks bad. And since most people can't achieve that look, just stop wearing ripped jeans!
Uhm... do you KNOW what distressing means? I think what you are talking about is the whiskering and the holes. Distressing is done in the wash process to make a pair of jeans not look raw. Distressing is used to contour the sides of the jeans, for example.
HEY HEY! Ok, so i really dont like the SUPER DISTRESSED JEAN look. But i really am in to the RIPPED LOOK still! The examples you've shown in this entry are DEFINITELY ugly, but when done nicely, like Abercrombie's done it - i think it's HOT! I love my Abercrombies!
And True Religion's are pretty damn cool.
And i agree with BEE. Sorry! Just my opinions :)
Bee: Thx. I might have gotten the definition of distressed wrong. I thought it meant making jeans intentionally marred (ripped and frayed jeans)/faded (roberto cavalli)according to dictionary.com. Its just what showed up when I typed "distress jeans" in neiman marcus. I guess your definition would be the more fashionably correct one then. Thx for the correction! :)
Emma W: Will look out for the A&F denim to see if they are indeed that awesome.
Caroline: Agreed. I haven't found a pair for True Religions that doesn't make the butt look big. Its the big flaps and huge logo. Guess its just their look and works for some people.
When I saw ripped jeans selling my favorite stores the first thing I thought was:"They can't be serious.Selling ripped jeans? What is this world coming to?"
I never jumped on that trend.I don't see the point of buying pre-ripped jeans when you can get a perfectly decent pair at target and rip them up.
Hey BARNEYS GIRL! Thanks hunnie. I know you're more into the European couture more than i am because im more into the whole beachy Juicy Couture look since im from America. But hope you like Abercrombie, which by the way is only sold in the states. www.abercrombie.com
Everyone adores Tsubi and look at their jeans. Distressed!
I rest my case.
ok, i dont usually like ripped jeans but the abercombie and levi's station on ripped jeans r like hot so like shh!! the pics u showed i will admit r hideous, but i love ripped jeans from levis and abercombie!! dont be so judgeing!!

i thought ripped and distressed jeans went out of style in 1986. maybe its just part of the whole white trash chic fad that made mesh hats and wife beaters popular again. can't we just leave the 80's behind. please. next we'll be seeing michael jackson leather jackets again.
Ripped jeans are cute, you just so happen to get the ugly pictures of jeans. Also, no ripped jeans are not going out of style,. their just coming in. Ripped jeans are cute, you people are probably old people who dont have style. So get over it, thier cute. And no its not white trash, yall are just jealous becuase you obviously have no style at all!
i am lovin lovin lovin jeans with holes right now. they're SO back in. the jeans you put up are UGLY...but the True Religion "cowgirl destroyed" is a good style...Paige Premium also has one with good holes. I also agree with emma w...abercrombie has some good destroyed looks.
referring to bethany's comment...i think ppl are paying hundreds for ripped jeans rather than 30-60...must disturb you more...
Old 501's with some rips are best.
The facts from Amy, a very busy retailer:
"Distressed" can range from mildly "worn" to severely ripped, or "destroyed".
The "worn-in" look is not headed out at all. This style is currently expanding through all apparel and accessories. This style approach aims for character and patina.
Any style can appear tacky if improperly executed.
Proper execution of the distressed look requires paying sufficiently skilled workers to create them.
Better executed pieces accordingly cost more.
These days, few pieces of apparel are bought to be worn daily for years; which would be required to get this look naturally.
Distressed leather is also expanding.
You know that i make a living distressing jeans. Distressed jeans are a way of expressing my vision. It’s therapeutic for me and I strongly disagree with what you have written here. But i guess if YOU have to make a living demeaning other people's jobs, I guess it's ok to do that then. Because i see how important a job like yours as well as mine is to oneself and when someone interferes with that, it’s just demeaning towards yourself.
omg those jeans r SO hideous who would EVR wear those?! o i kno! an ugly girl in my class thats tot flat
You're kidding me? You think distressed jeans are out? Yeah right! I just sat here and chuckled to myself through the entire post... I'm a guy, and guys LOVE distressed jeans, especially on girls... Jeans dont make your butt look huge, some just aren't as good at hiding FACT. girls are silly.
THOSE PICTURES AT THE TOP ARE UGLY!!! BUT IF YOU BUY YOUR OWN JEANS AND RIP THEM IN THE RIGHT PLACES AND NOT TO MANY TIMES THEN THEY MIGHT LOOK CUTE!YOU GUYS ARE PROBABLEY SOME OLD PEOPLE WITH NO STYLE! I LOVE DISTRESSED AND RIPPED JEANS!!SEARH ON GOOGLE TO LEARN HOW TO RIP/DISTRESS YOUR JEANS
All of you losers talking about "distressed" jeans should just stop hate'n on the jeans because your probably just jelous.
BITCHES
haha people can be really defensive about their jeans. If you like them so much, then whatever. Just wear em proud. Anyway, my personal opinion is that if your jeans naturally become distressed (your favorite old pair, your work/camping pair), then its cool! It has a history behind it, and they're comfy and yours. Not ripped in the same formulatic places like A+F jeans are.
no not young was around when ripped jeans were rage in 60,s.
absolutey hate the pre ripped and faded fake jeans.
A female who wears a pair of tight jeans that wear natural, rips, threadbearing, and fading, looks at her best
the jeans in the pictures above are ugly because they're distressed/ torn in places that would not naturally wear in the course of wearing the jeans. They look 'manufactured'. But distressing that happens naturally/that you do yourself in an intelligent manner can look really great.
ripped jeans are for those who rip them on accident... its pointless to spend $50 on a pair of ripped jeans from A&F when you can spend $40 on the same pair unripped and rip them yourself. plus. dark wash are much more flatering than ripped.
OMG, what are you, a bunch a fukin gorms, ripped jeans are like soo in if u had any clue about fashion you would know that tit heads, get a life instead of thinkin u know what your talkin about.
its obvious that the people who say distressed jeans are still "in" are the people that the trend has just hit in places like surburban high schools. fyi, when the trend hits you guys, its over.
ps. i bet you still think uggs are "in."
To the person who said that distressed jeans are out and that by the time the trends get to suburban highschools the trends are over. i take offense to that because I'm a junior in a suburban highschool. i love ripped jeans!! abercrombie hollister american eagle They're laid back and casual, wear them with a hoodie or a tshirt and some flops and your good to go. and we don't still think uggs are in, but i wear mine anyways cause i love them. You sound really stuck up and unoriginal. me and my friends wear ripped jeans because we LIKE them not because its a trend i feel bad for people like you that feel that they have to follow trends to be cool. =( be yourself. rip your JEANS!!!
p.s. those pictures of distressed jeans are hideous! i don't know who would wear 'em. =)
Y'know. I don't think it's a matter of ripped jeans being "out" or even "in" for that matter. Distressed jeans have alway's been around it just comes down to personal taste. The pictured examples shown are actually pretty good. I think they look Rock n' Roll and sexy. As long as the 'alternative' scene is around I think distressed jeans will alway's be around & popular in the rock world.

WHY DOES ANYONE CARE!!!!! Y'ALL ARE GETTING SO MAD.... i think distressed jeans are usually innappropriate though, the holes showing skin in the wrong places, heck jeans are innappropriate, theyre sloppy. EVERYONE, I WANT TO TO TAKE A SECOND.......AND 3 DEEP BREATHES, AND TRY ON A SKIRT.........
I personally hate this trend too. Not that it somehow bothers me to see it -- just that it is so impossible to *BUY* a pair of jeans that don;t look like some dirt ball was rolling around in for two years.
Not only do I not like distressed jeans, I think buying anything that looks like you've already worn it for years it just so effin stupid.
Trends are introduced by fashion companies. Their existence is to sell clothes.
Don't be sheep.
Hmmm... distressed jeans *can* look a bit crap! But they *can* also look cool. The ones shown here are very tacky! But I think a little bit can look very good, depending where the slits are. I once saw a girl wearing light blue jeans that had one slit at the back of the thigh, very near her bum, and one on the other leg, at the front of her thigh. It looked very sexy. But then her jeans weren't tacky-looking to start with!
However, distressing denim hotpants or mini skirts, I am all for. Do it! Just do it well and do it freely, without making it look too forced!
you chicks are all nerds...you probably where the kind of jeans that go past your belly-button, and are all dark blue and black with tapered legs.. haha nerds.
I think distressed jeans r 2 cute when done right. And of course its stupid to pay for something u can make at home. And only the last 2 designs r ugly.
P.S.
CAROLINE whats wrong with a big butt?
and all these labels (AE,Hollister,Ambercrombie, etc.) n stuff... WHY?!!! They r so expensive, u can go get the same thing somewhere else for like $20 less. n how can u say any kind of jeans r out (except patchwork n bleached)?
ya'll iz just hatin...they are the chit....
okay i know you guys don't like the ripped jean look.....but i think that it is soo hot!!!! if you think that the holes are innapropriate then just put on some cute legggings that will show through them and there you have it!!! just try it!!!!!
oh and just to add some input my fav. stores are hollister, abercrombie&fitch, and of course american eagle!!!!
Is it just me or does anyone else see the irony in complaining about the whole distressed jeans look while having a quote in your masthead from Vivienne Westwood - the woman who basically created the whole punk fashion aesthetic in the 1970's.
Fashion is not about following, its all about creating your own personal statement based on your individual tastes. Some people rock distressed jeans while others can't. My advice is to do what works best for you and quit worrying about what the flavour of the month is.
hey, ms. holier-than-thou... those pics you show are hot. ripped jeans are not "out", they are "in" and will likely always be. it looks good (sexy if you ask me) and can even look sophisticated if paired with a blazer and boots. i am a 44yo male - i wear them, and i love women who do as well. lighten up, dear.
For the best in distressed. See http://levisforless.blogspot.com
We have Levi's 510,505,550,577,515,520,522,Lowrise,Stretch, Distressed,Destroyed!
Personally I like distressed jeans. I like the look. It's so much more interesting than a plain boring solid-color pair of jeans. Sure there are certain outfits that should not have distressed jeans, however when going for a more "grungy" look or even more "casual" a good pair of distressed jeans can look really nice.
I never liked the rips and tears in jeans. I know how much work goes into making distressed jeans and how much care goes into making a "proper rip/tear" but in all honesty is just reduces the lifespan of the jeans making it very easy for that hole to become awkwardly bigger to the point where half your leg is hanging out. If you're putting your jeans on and you leg goes through the knee it's time to throw them out.
To be honest I believe wearing something just because it's "in" is extremely shallow. Who care's what other people like, wear what YOU like and don't base that off of what the media is telling you to like. I know some people who really admire the way I dress and present myself and they are absolutely shocked to find out an outfit I wear that they really like was bought at Target and the shoes from DSW. Too many people think they have to spend hundreds of dollars on a designer name to look good when the name on the tag does not change it's appearance.
I only wear distressed jeans and I never spend $100 on them. I love the difference in color and the texture but I'm also very picky about what I wear.
So that's my input. Don't go flipping through magazines to find out what celebrities say you should be wearing. Get a sense of style and some individuality and buy what looks great on you.
i am distressing a pair of jeans right now and i definitely don't think they're "out". nothing is fashion is ever out so i say, embrace it all and wear what you love. somebody has to start wearing a trend to make it "in". so be that person! i am.
you don't know anything about style!
they're hot...if you can't pull it off don't insult other people's style.

The jacket of the season for me has to be the Micheal Jackson Jacket. I like the Michael style, when I see him dancing with different stylish jackets !!! I always get questions where i get it from and I'm glad to get it from Celebs Leather jackets. They have huge variety of leatherjackets, Micheal Jackson Leather Jackets etc.
I have honestly never read such overwhelmingly good content like this. I agree with your points and your ideas. This info is really great. Thanks.
Distressed Jeans
Distressed jeans are a bold fashion choice, but overdoing it can turn into a style "don't" for SS06 trends. Pairing them with a sleek thriller jacket black can balance the edgy look, adding a touch of sophistication. The key is moderation—let the jacket’s classic vibe elevate the distressed elements.
