SS06 Makeup Trends: Purple Eye Shadow

Normally I'm not a big eye shadow fan. Don't get me wrong, I think eye shadows are great for brightening up one's looks. But I have always had the problem of oily eyelids, which means that the eye shadow powder tends to gather at the creases after a few hours. I'm still trying to find a solution to this so if you know how to make eye shadow stay on oily eyelids, please let me know!

Anyways back to the topic, just like
pink is for our face, purple is apparently the color of the moment for our eyes. (Excuse my lack of knowledge for the names of the different shades and hues of purple.) As seen on the SS06 catwalk:

Twinkle -This is such a pretty purple! This light, shimmery purple is perfect for both day and night.

Badgley Mischka -This is a solid, greyish purple color. Another good day or night color if you prefer to not look so sparkly and more 'proper' and sophisticated.

Missoni -Another solid purple. The pink blush on the models make the whole look 'prettier' than the look in Badgley Mischka.

Libertine -Very strong, shimmery purple. This is serious hardcore purple, so only wear it for parties at night!

The Chanel and Dior eye shadow palettes are both great for the looks above. I prefer the Dior one simply because there are five shades to mix and play with, but Chanel eye shadow is simply too divine to resist!

I'm also loving the Nars SS06 campaign. The purple (and the whole combination of makeup) used here makes Lily Cole look so haunting!
The Nars duo eye shadow gives a more matte effect than the Chanel and Dior palettes, so you may prefer this palette if you don't like shimmery eye shadow.

Purple is especially compliments brown and blue eyes, but it goes for all eye colors so do try it out!

I´ve heard that if you put some powder/foundation on your eyelids before the eye saddow it is supposed to not get as easely oily and stay longer.

I use benefit's lemon aid as an eye shadow base - it brightens my lids and makes the shadow stay much longer and distributes it more evenly... i LOVE Stila's eye shadow pans' purple hue combination of grace and cloud - a subtle hint of purple without that painted lady feeling to it... http://www.stilacosmetics.com/templates/products/sp_shaded_color.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY5069&PRODUCT_ID=PROD2395#top

I have the same problem -- I use revlon color stay (in a nice, neutral color - Hazelnut, I think?). It doesn't crease. It comes in color palettes, but I prefer the single-color eyeshadows. there's always that *one* color you hate when you buy the quad.

what about on brown skin?? i have a purple eyeshadow and it looks . . . very . . . odd.

and- i've seen denim vests pop up all over the place (guess, AE, old navy--i know, not such big names, but i live in a small town with no place to shop) maybe you could put something on here about them??

I use Benefit's F.Y. Eye as my eye makeup base. It lasts me through the work day usually, but honestly, if I'm going out after work I need to redo the eye shadow because it'll be quite a mess by 8 if I don't.

Lancome Colour Dose EyeColour & Base. It's a sheer cream that comes in natural, subtly shimmery colors. I have really oily lids, but when I put this on (and let it dry) before putting on powder shadow, it lasts forever, even after a night out dancing (when I originally applied in the morning!)

Oh good. I have blue eyes. I've never used that color, but those first two are such a pretty, pretty shade that I might have to try it!

Purple eyeshadow is also super flattering on asian eyes. Have you tried Rimmel's purple trio? It's cheap yet they're really solid colours and extremely pretty.

MAC paints work wonders as a shadow base. Also, using pressed powder before applying works too.

As a african american, I can't wear lavendar shadow, it has to be eggplant or something darker. So I always suggest finding the shade that's right for someone's skin tone. I usually wear it as a smoky eye look.

Oh goodie. I love purple. It compliments my skin tone so well, I use it all the time-a bonus for me that it also happens to be the color of the season! I combine Beautiful Iris and Parfait Amour from Mac to make a nice gradient that I tone up for night and down for the day. And I think Smashbox's eyelid primer works quite well too as a base, although not sure about the oily issue. I def have to try out these different techniques of the purple shadow next time!

After having done some make-up training, I can say for a fact that dark purples look great on everybody, and the light purples look really good on brown eyes. This isn't really a rule as such, but if you put a light purple on fair skin it will only make you look fairer, why not try greens and browns for fair skin and blue eyes.

i find your fashion posts more entertaining and informative than your beauty posts. the beauty posts seem to be not so knowledgeable, sorry!

i agree...you're so good at fashion posts, i would stick with those. We like hearing from an expert about fashion...but anybody can go out there and try new eyeshadows.

e/s base: try MAC paints. creaseproof (i suffer from the oily lids as well -- so i vouch for this stuff).
they have a ton of neutral shades as well as some colored ones.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions on how to deal with oily lids. I just realised I actually own a tube of MAC paint, so I will def be trying it out.

Annonymouses: Yes I do realise I'm no beauty expert -I don't really use or own a lot of makeup. But BG and I use this blog as a sort of journal to record whatever girly thing we are loving at that moment, so we do tend to write about other things that is not fashion. Besides, I'm sure not everyone knew that purple is the color for eye shadows this season. And if you have good eye shadow suggestions, we would love to know because your opinion is always more honest than a commercial magazine's!

Benefit makes a great base. F-Y-Eye is great on the lids even if you have oily skin.

ive heard over and over from crazy professionals ive worked with that using the same base you use on the rest of your face will make eyeshadow last all day. i remember a certain makeup artist who did this, then used a translucent powder, and then did what she wanted with the eyeshadow, which was crazy, btw, and it lasted ALL DAY. it seriously looked just as good at the end of the day as when she first applied it. :)

I've had the same oily eyelid problem but recently tried Urban Decay Primer Potion and it's awesome! My eyeshadow/pigment makeup stayed put w/o creasing for 12 hours - that's NEVER happened! Got it at Sephora for $14. I've always loved purple but hadn't found anything I liked for my asian brown eyes until Fluidline by MAC in non-conformist - a pretty purple cream liner that does not make my eyes look bruised!

I have the same problem with oily lids. I have found that the "paints" by MAC work really well. You just put it on as a base color before your shadow then apply as normal. It lasts all day and does not crease at all. Totally worth every dime!!!

Urban decay eye shadow primer potion will keep your lids crease free absolutely all day. I promise, it is amazing! Buy it! Less than $20 at Sephora. I use it every day, don't know if I could live without it, LOL
