Beauty Trend: Dark Nails

It's no secret that dark nails are all the rage this FW season. Who hasn't asked the Chanel beauty counters, or at least heard about the out-of-stock Chanel Black Satin nail polish? (And if you haven't heard about the craze, please go brush up your fashion current knowledge!) Dark nails look so cool with this season's clothes. When I say 'dark', it basically refers to shades such as brown, black and dark purplish-maroon. Personally, I favour black. Dark nails are good for casual and formal outfits:

Mischa Barton wearing semi-casual, lux, halfway-gothic/punkish clothes.

Lindsay Lohan shows that dark nails are great for formal occasions too. Of course, that lovely huge ring of hers helps too.

One very important thing to remember about this season's dark nails is that your nails must be cut short, and preferably a neat, professional-looking shape. And it's always a good idea to add on a transparent layer on top just to get that extra shine, (very much like this season's patent leather accessories!) If dark colours just isn't your thing, red is the other pretty and fashionable choice.

As a little New Years treat, my friend and I went to get manicures. I was so excited I finally got to get my nails black (-yes, I get excited over very little things.) The nails were seriously cool and went with all my outfits. Plus it have me a much-needed polished-edgy feel. Even though Chanel's nail polish was the one in spotlight this season, BG tells me that OPI (which was used in my manicure,) makes better nail polishes than Chanel. Who knows? I guess just buy nail polish from the brand you like or which is at the price range you feel is right. Has anyone else been having fun with dark nails?

I love the dark shades even though I love CHANEL allegoria. My favorite ones this season are CHANEL madness and OPI vamp. It would also be simply lovely is you would make a post on a model. Thank you!

Just like you said, Chanel Blac Satin was out of stock so I snooped around for other alternatives... Anna Sui cosmetics! They have it in black and it smells so good, rose scented! To top if off, the bottle is so lovely & it's cheap!

I absolutely loved this fall trend as it loked soo cool with the leggings or really slim black jeans with a girly top or dress. My dark nails rocked my style this fall! sadly, I had to throw my black nail polish away last weekend b/c it was getting old and hard to put on. There's nothing worse than black nailpolish that is not nicely put on!

i LOVE my chanel black satin! i'm in singapore so it wasn't as sold out, although i got the last bottle at the counter! the only annoying thing is when it starts to chip and then you have to redo it. but it is definitely a favorite

I am a big believer in groomed nails ! Last time i polished my nails black , i used mavala which i bought from harrods.Maybe mavala is not a glamorous brand like chanel, but since harrods sells them that means they are good, plus the price is a great bargain and my nails looked like a million box ; )

apparently yellow and orange will be the 'in' nail colors for spring - quite a bit of a change! I still love the black satin though.

actually, i work in the fashion/beauty industry, and black nail polish (not flat matte black, but more of a shimmery black) and navy blue will be the nail color of choice for SS07's pretty bohemian bubbly shapes and bright/pastels colors. all of those balloon sleeves that end right below the elbow will make hands and nails the main focus. but don't wear your dark nail polish if you have a tan! stick to pale white/cream sheers if you get a tan. it's all about contrast!

I've fearful that the blank polish will stain your nails. Is that really true?

hah its true(i've also noticed emily from devil wears prada wearing black nailpolish) i have been wearing black nail polish for years; so for a change i have black nailpolish with a little bit of glitter in it;which was actually for the holidays but i liked it so ;p.

and 24x7shopgirl, every once in a while i use a piece of lemon to clean my nails and then dip it in a little bowl of milk, i'm not sure where i got that from but i've been doing it for years and it keeps my nails from getting yellow :)

I too am a long time fan of dark nail polish, from my days as a neo-punk in the eighties. Recently, inspired by spreads in W and elsewhere, I went with a looong, pointed (rounded point) fake nail with either black, dark red, or - pale cream. Really. Very effective. Now, with natural nails, I still favor the black, dark red, and brown with a short natural cut. It goes with every outfit, and spans the range from dressy to casual.

And OPI nail colors ARE great.

I always like darker colors on my nails. I have a Chanel bottle in satin black, but it chips in 3 days doing little work around the house. Too much $$ for 3 days.

I found Orly... $7.50 the bottle, like OPI.

My favs are:
OPI - London Bridge is Falling Brown
Orly - Talk Dirty and Naughty

oh do you all buy expensive nailpolish?? i think $20 is just too much xD i have no idea where to get OPI nailpolish. is it just as expensive per bottle? ;p

You can get OPI polish online, at just about any hair salon, mall stores (like Trade Secret)...it's easy to find and between $6 - $7.50 a bottle. I highly recommend it (like most of the commenters on this topic). I also agree that this topic is a bit on the old news side...but whatever! :)

Anyway, I love OPI Lincoln Park After Dark...I switch between that and their Pistol Packin' Pink when I want something subtle.

Hello... stumbled across your blog randomly...
I agree with what Rachel said at the top... OPI's Lincoln Park After Dark is the perfect brownish purple shade. It works for those who might think black is a little too goth for their tastes.
Personally I love black... it's really classy looking. OPI's black is a great polish.
I was at Walgreens the other day and flipped through Seventeen magazine. They mentioned something about a French manicure, but instead of having white tips, trying black. What do you think about this? Personally I'm not sure how I feel yet... I guess the only way is to try it out myself and see how it looks.

Also.... for those of you who are a little bit afraid to spend a lot on a little bottle of dark polish you aren't sure you're even going to like... at Walgreens you can get a bottle of Milani nail polish for about $3(US). It's not the best polish, but it's good just to test out colors to see what you like, or it's good to use if you like changing your polish every few days like me. Milani's color Black Cherry is very similar to OPI's Lincoln Park After Dark.

i still love Chanel's Rouge Noir.. Chanel colors are so glossy and lovely

I love Chanel's Black Satin, and also the new Noir Ceramic - even being at work all week, with a decent base coat and top coat, I can keep it neat for about a week! NailsInc London Bridge has a really good shine to it as well.

Regarding Lesley's french Manicure with black tips - how about black nails with silver tips. Takes some getting used to, but most people that saw it thought it looked really cool!

I'm still trying to find my ideal blue/black inky polish though... they are usually too 'blue', and not a blue tinge on black. Ah, I'm so picky :-)

I usually wear no nail polish whatsoever but I am completely into this dark nail polish trend. My fave is OPI's Lincoln Park After Dark... sooo rich!

One issue though: even with a top coat, my dark manicures only last 3 days!

Any suggestions?

Chanel nailpolish is very overpriced, but I do agree that their Satin Black nailpolish is amazing. For those who are price conscious, try a dark colour from the Rimmel line. I'm using a dark maroon/purple nailpolish colour, and also their black nailpolish and both are extremly good. They don't chip for atleast 5 days after application, and they're not expensive. You can buy their nailpolish for $3-4 a bottle, and it's really worth your dollar! The Rimmel nailpolish also has a vinyl shine to it after application, and the good thing is that it dries in 60 seconds!

i'm a complete convert to dior vernis - goes on so well even though, as you've pointed out, it does chip (i've stopped doing the housework which helps!) not really a fan of the black but I love the rouge/red tea one - 2 coats and the colour is an amazing dark red. definitely worth the money. also a huge fan of the rimmel ones and they do last really well.
