In Defence of Mary Kate
I am so tired of reading people’s comments in forums and articles about how they hate Mary Kate’s recent outfits. For those of you who don’t keep up-to-date with MK, here is a typical recent outfit of hers: long shirts/ short dresses with leggings and Balenciaga ankle boots.Yes, she has been wearing shirts and sweaters that very just cover her butt. But guess what? She pulls it off. And before anyone starts complaining how short those tops are, may I point out that no paparazzi photographer has yet to snap a shot of her flashing any underwear or private parts. And we all know the paparazzi are very efficient in shooting such shocking shots.
Mary Kate’s Balenciaga ankle boots (which are rumoured to be around 8 inches tall,) are possibly this season’s more controversial fashion choice. Gossip-mongers in majority seem to hate the boots. Personally I love them. I loved the Balenciaga FW06 show and I loved those boots, although I can understand that those boots are not for the fashion-faint-hearted. MK’s style is often controversial, but very stylish: stylish as in creative and personal, but not preppy or the American immaculate-looking type of stylish.
So yes, feel free to criticise MK's fashion choices. Just remember that at least she stays true to her own style.

Maybe people just expect her to dress like an old lady (sarcasm). I think her outfits are cute and fun, which is exactly what a young adult should be wearing. BTW, love the boots and she pulls them off well.

I'm not a fan of MK, but I will agree with you. The only celebrities with a style like hers seem to copy her, and every year she tries something different. I give her credit!

MK is really becoming a style icon of sorts for many channeling her unique personal style. She deserves to be recognized as a vair vair stylish celebrity, and trashed a lot less for some of her choices. And hey, if I could pull off those barely-there dresses, and oversized shirts, I would be one happy girl. Not to mention, the boots: fabulous.

i like mk's style, it is quite original and no matter what people say, most will eventually follow her style. the whole leggings had to be from mk!!
I love her style (I adorrre those boots - and the fact that she has actually worn them more than once, unlike most celebs!) and if I had legs like MK I wouldn't bother wearing pants either. The only thing that I think lets her look down and pulls her into Czechoslovakian hooker territory is the awful, awful awful hair. It's really quite nasty. I know it's grunge and etc but something about it is just wrong - maybe the 'I bleached my hair in lemon juice' shade? It looked better golden brown, as in pic 2.
well i would like to see her with happier colors, she's always wearing dark colors once in a while a lighter color would be nice, then again it is her body but i'm only suggesting. I dislike how hypocritical people can be, fashion is suppose to be art and whatnot yet if someone is not wearing what everyone else is wearing then they look stupid according to some people. In 2005 a friend of mine had a mini skirt with legging underneath, at the time that style was not in yet and people kept giving her weird looks where we were at. Since when do we have to follow other people's idea of style in order to be happy?

I totally agree. I always liked Mary Kate more for whatever reason. Although, the english major in me is forcing me to tell you, as annoying as that side of me can be, that defense is spelled with an s, not a c.
In ten years Mk's style will be praised by every magazine, blog, zine whatever fashion related. I think she looks hot, and i'm so glad you pointed out the paparazzi not having any dirty shots of her because she pulls this look off in such a "young" classy way.
I completely agree. I love Mary-Kate's style and her [witch] boots. I've been visiting a lot of forums lately, and all I've been reading is WHEN IS MARY-KATE GOING TO DITCH HER WITCH BOOTS? First of all, they are not witch boots--they're Balenciaga and VERY stylish! Second of all, why do they care that Mary-Kate wears her boots day in and day out? I couldn't thank you more for coming to Mary-Kate's defense. By the way, eight inches? Wow, that would make her at least 5'10"!
Ive always loved MK and i think her fashion choices are just lovely. Unfortunately i cant say the same for her hygiene! she looks like she hasnt showered in a week!

She looks like she's been dumpster diving most of the time, or like a little kid wearing her mother's clothing. I love very short dresses but I think she needs to vary it up a bit, she seems to always be wearing the same black outfit. And I agree about the ratty hair. Yeesh!!

I think it's because she went through that grunge stage, and she got so much publicity over that. So people just assume that she still dresses like that.
I think its outrageous and wonderful, bold and magical. She looks great. My favorite is the hat in the phot above. keep it up MK!!

BTW--Defens/ce is spelled differently in British and American English.
So if you're an English major, at least learn to recognize that there is more than one style of English. Gray and Grey is another example, as is color and colour.
And while I like her individual style, I wish MK would do something different with her hair.
I really think that they are fabulous! I cannot bring my self to be negative about them.

I appreciate her fearlessness, but I like her sister Ashley's sleeker looks much better. And I HATE those boots. They make her look as if she has horse hooves. But you're right to applaud how she goes her own way and seems unconcerned with what others think. The mark of a true fashionista!

I like those boots, too. Other blogs were calling them "witch boots" but I think they're pretty cool :).
I really like the boots. I think they fit with her whole grunge look. Personally i don't think theres much wrong with wearing shirts and leggings if you wear the latter like you would a pair of trousers.
Actually, I love some of her recent outfits! Their grunge and rock chick, and she's in her twenties so who can blame her for dressing a bit more rebellious? I love the black tights, and the trilby hat. And she carries off the skull scarf even though everyone has one. I salute her style!
i love nearly everything she puts on. whether it's bag lady or chic, she has a way of pulling it off. those balenciaga ankle boots are amazing.
Oh, c'mon! Everybody knows that BLACK is COOL! Weren't any of you creative when you were in your 20s & 30s? 40s??? The tousled look of MK's hair is obviously intentional; you can't get all that fluff without WASHING it. The more people pick on her, the tougher she has to be and the blacker her clothes, the better. I ALWAYS wore black until about a year ago. I LOVED her boots the first time I saw them, and I think most of her outfits look great on her. Some people don't understand art and creativity; that's their prob. and their lack. The only thing MK was off about was the platinum hair. (Don't like Ashley's brown, either.) MK is the tough, pretty one, Ashley is the refined, pretty one. And don't forget--one gets just as messed up as the other. I like the Olsens; they're fun and interesting and always coming up with something new. Clothes and makeup ARE our toys to play with. Have you noticed it's MOSTLY the MEN who rag on her? And they do it because they're afraid to say they're in love with her, and she wouldn't waste her spit on them. And the women only WISH they could afford her shoes and bags! MK's gotta be one of my top favorites. She and Ashley are no Lohan or Hilton--thank you God--who are just PIGS. And if anyone ever looks DIRTY--it's Jennifer Aniston hands down! Yeecchhh!

I happened to love MK. True...she'd had her issues like all other celebrities. But at least she has an ORIGINAL sense style and isn't just a trend whore like most of the others her age. As for those boots...I don't personally her for those, but I do give her props just for being able to walk in them. God knows my ass would be on the floor soooo fast...
the problem with Mary Kate is that she'll never grow up! and she'll always look like a child in adult clothing! she may not be the full house kid anymore but she sure still looks like that!!!!

She looks very unsteady in those boots, and I think that lack of grace detracts from her style. She certainly is thin enough and young enough to do the leggings/tunic, but the whole thing fall apart when you keep expecting her to topple over at any moment.

I like that MK doesn't seem to think she has to wear a different outfit everday. Obviously she has the money to easily have different clothes on everyday. She seems to enjoy putting a true look together that says "MK" and wearing. I see to many girls in my school just wearing a new outfit, to act rich. BUt none of their clothes seem put together. I would rather see a couple quality outfits over and over then what I see when a girl is showing off how much she has.

Myself not a great fan of MK. But I will appreciate her style. She does not follow the so called formulas as other do. She is fashionable in her own style. There are few people found who are not persuaded easily by others thought. We can’t say them wrong.

the bottom line is that people are jelous. not everyone can pull off what she wears. those that do have a fashion sence can see that what she wears iis amazing and those that don't are jelous for main reasons. They don't have the sence to even put somthing like that together,they'd care to much to wear it if they did because they care to much about what people think, and people just can't stand when people think out of the box. We grow up thinking that way and some people just never grow out of that pathetic idea. So who cares. oviously not Mary Kate!

I read an old interview with Coco Channel and she said something to the effect that great style is wearing what suits you and wearing it with confidence. I think that the clothes that Mary Kate wears represent this statement pretty well.
I must agree with what most of you said, she really has her own style and we should give her credit for that! I think she's a trendsetter, the trends are maybe a bit excessively, but I'm sure we will see them back in a milder way soon. And if you don't like the black I'm sure MK will change her style soon, as she always does. So in time the ones who dislike all the black she's been wearing lately will be happy. (I'm sorry for any spelling mistakes, English is not my first language)

I really dont understand how anyone can critisize her... What she wears is her decision.. isnt that what fashions all about ? expressing yourself and your individuality through your clothes... Not looking the same as everybody else so you dont get slated by the tabloids ...
