The Perfect Jeans For YOU

Left to right: J Brand 12" Pencil Leg Stretch Jean, Citizen of Humanity Kelly Jean, Notify Wide Leg Jean. All from shopbop.com

I always get asked whether skinny jeans are still 'in' or will still be 'in' in the foreseeable future and I usually give a vague reply. The runway collections show a bit of all styles of trousers (skinny, straight, wideleg,) and the trousers available in stores also are a bit of all styles. So the thing is, there is no one prevailing trend and you should just wear whatever you think is the most flattering and comfortable (as you should for all other garments too).
The style of jeans you look best in mostly just depends on your body shape. Take me and my friend for example, we're the same height but we have different body shapes: I'm pear-shaped and she's apple-shaped. I usually prefer bootcut, but I've started to wear straight-leg too last summer (as opposed to skinny jeans). My friend on the other hand, also used to wear bootcut (which fit a bit loose) until the whole skinny jean trend came along. Since then, she's been completely hooked onto skinny jeans because they seriously fit well on her.
The Telegraph recently just published a fantastic article on which body shape suits which cut. It's common sense really, but it's definitely worth a read. Let me know your experiences with different styles of jeans!

When shopping for jeans, you must never be in a rush. Always take time to try on dozens if you have to, until you find just the right pair to flatter your figure. You'll be wearing them so often it will more than make up for the time you spend choosing them.

in australia, i'd be confident in saying at least 90% of teenagers are wearing skinny jeans, and about 80% in the 20s age group. skinny jeans are hugely popular here.

if you like skinny jeans, i'd suggest sass&bide, bettina liano and tsubi (ksubi?!). sass&bides are very flaterring and trendy, and bettina liano specifically cater to girls who are petite/very thin.

i tend to favour straight legged sass & bides and boot-legged tommy hilfiger (casual wear), because unfortunately for me my body is not suited for skinnys! however, i took the plunge and bought stella mccartney (for target, but still stella mccartney :D) skinnys - best fitting jeans i have ever worn!

i like skinnies and straight legs because i'm rather thin but i don't care much for flare. however i'd be open to try a wide leg jean. i just think a thin leg with a wide flare at the bottom doesn't look good on my body type.

i love love love ag and paige. usually i just buy those two brands but today i got a pair of citizens of humanity -- they fit really well! normally i'm a 26 but i was 25s in the citizens so i guess they run big.

I love skinny jeans, since i'm short. It fits my body perfectly. I tried stright leg before, it's ok not bad, and i love wearing flare jeans with a cute top when i go clubbing.
I tried wide leg before, but i think it's hard to look stylish with it. You need the body for it.
also, the skinny i love would be Jbrand for good pice, and good cut. the other one would be Tsubi the super skinny zip jeans. they are amazing. :)

Those jeans are so low-waisted! EEK! There should be advice on who can and cannot (or should not...) wear various waist heights, because I certainly cannot (and should not!) wear low-rise jeans. Are there any really stylish jeans that aren't low-rise?

There are many high-waisted jeans around this season from brands such as Acne, Top Shop and Chloe.

I personally prefer low-waisted jeans because they feel less restraining and suitable for short people.

Here in Canada we have a 95% majority of serious skinny jean dedication and the rest of the 5% are wearing an adapted form of the skinny jean for thier body type (Straight leg, Bootcut or Slim Fit).

I am 20 and I luv,luv LUV skinny jeans, we had flares and bootcut for sooo long & I'm glad they're mostly out.

These jeans show off our smokin' figures without having us expose our underwear (mainly thongs or ultra low waisted flare...*ugh I'm still distgusted that this even was a "trend" mind u I DID not give in to it its so vulgar*) and that is a MAJOR plus.

Another MAJOR plus is that us girls can finally show the world our wondeful shoes, of every shape and kind that unfortunatly flares ALWAYS mostly hid from view *shudder* I had to resort to cuffing designer bootcuts to show my killer pumps & sandals off in the summer..but no more thanx to the skinny jean!!!

In Canada there is no H&M, TopShop or bargain clothing store, so we do pay full retail price for our jeans. Thus I agree that you should not be in a rush when buying, make sure u feel confident in the jeans you choose as they are a staple for the wadrobe.

I currently have scrapped all my old jeans (gave them to charity) and I now only own Skinny jeans in addition to other pants like dress pants etc. Here is a description of what I own:
-A very posh & sexy black skinny made of luxorious black velvet/suede lokking material that is actually a genius blend of wool, cotton and Lycra or spandex I cannot remember. These I wear everywhere from lectures, to interview to the clubs.
-Dark but not too dark all even wash skinny jean with detailed stitch on the pocket that is very minimalistic--> go w/t absolutely everything for a casual look
-White skinny jean, looks hot under a knee high boot in the winter and also with killer pumps/sandals and cute flats. I have worn them to an interview and out to a club & they certainly are very hot.
-Biege corduroy skinny, a classic material in this color flatters everyone. These I only wear to school.
-4 different washes of skinny jeans, a vintage wash, classic rugged wash (great under a boot or uggs), pale grey and blasted. I do not recomment a light blue skinny jean it really does nothing for the figure or to the rest of your outfit, they are really blah.

-I am currently looking for a pinstripe or black suit matching skinny to go w/t a hot suit vest and jacket I have, currenlty I have cropped wool trousers...

I could go on and on about Skinny's they're great and I will be wearing them for the rest of 2007 at least and by wearing I mean seriously wearing to the death of them.

I am also looking at a wide leg pant for work however since they are ok but I'm only looking to buy one pair.

In Canada a great lower cost skinny jean are Mavi's @ 90$ CDN, their white skinny's are fab and a good piece for summer :) just google Mavi and see what I mean.... a store which stocks them in Canada is www.offthewallclothing.com.

Pin,

There is not a chance 95% of young girls wear skinny jeans. I'd say like 50% regularily.

Also, we have H&M.

And tonsssss of discount clothing stores. Try winners for example, you can find designer jeans for cheap.

Learn your facts.

I have to agree with you - denim trends come and go but ultimately what suits your body type is what works for you! I'm loving skinnies because I have long legs and a straight figure and bootcut never really did much for me. I'm interested to try out wide leg or higher-waisted flair though to see if that would work :)

I gotta say, I am in love with skinny jeans, and although I was extremely reluctant to hear about wide legged trousers, I'm finding those are really swell too. Actually, I'll pretty much try anything as long as it isn't flares again. Sooo 1999!

I love skinny jeans! Before, I never really cared much about the fit of jeans, I just always bought boot cut (that was the most popular fit at the time). After awhile, I kind of started to dislike the jean look because I sometimes felt that it was difficult to dress it up or look stylish in it.

Skinny jeans came in, and I'm amazed at how much dresser and stylish my more casual tops looked with it. Now I only wear skinny and straight fit pants because I'm short and have a petite frame. Any other fit seems to overwhelm my frame a bit. I figured I mind as well play up my petiteness rather than hide it, LOL.

I'm glad that there are many options for women's pants since all women come in different shapes and sizes! I wish they would make more pants for shorter women though (I'm 5'0" and the shortest most lenghts come in is for 5'4" which is not that short compared to me)!

Pin: Are you kidding? Are you even from Canada? Of course we have H&M, and a lot of bargain stores. Just the other day I saw Winners selling 7 for All Mankind at around $70.
I live in Toronto and there is no way 95% of Torontonians are wearing skinny jeans, not even close.
Your comments are testament to your ignorance.

LOL...skinny jeans are tacky i find..and low rise is so hideous it makes you look shorter...and im from toronto ..most girls are wearing bootcuts/flares i would say easily 80% , 20% skinnies , coz skinnies look horrible with tennis shoes (ie golf club) and look good only model or skinny petite frames...

i agree with the comment above about skinny jeans looking really bad with tennis shoes or sneakers of any kind, they should be strictly worn with heels, boots, or cute flats. But I think that unless you are seriously over-weight, skinny jeans hide lumps very smoothly. Wide-legged jeans on the other hand is a trend that i dread, because it only looks good on very tall people, otherwise it makes legs look really short and thick, and they have the risk of swallowing your shoes, so shoes must be cautiously chosen to wear with them.

i disagree with two comments above.
i live in scarborough but i go to school in the heart of downtown toronto [& we all know which school it is that is RIGHT next to eatons & the huste-bustle of the toronto-business-world]. i`d say about 70% of girls are wearing some form of skinnies or straights. i hardly ever see flares anymore, bootcuts are rare & other than that, it`s pants for business suits.
skinnies & straights are on definitely more than 20% of girls. come downtown & check it out for yourself.

It's nice that so many styles of women's pants are in right now. It makes it easier to choose a flattering pair and still be fashionable.
