SS07 Last Call: Gladiator-ish Sandals

Gladiator sandals have been 'in' for the past few summers. But it seems like this may be the last summer gladiators are 'in'. I've never been into gladiator sandals -not because I don't like the design, but because I'm only 5'2" and flat sandals are not at all flattering for short people.

However, in my last trip to Top Shop, I got tempted by these silver sandals and finally bought a pair. I've only worn them a few times and I have to say they are pretty perfect for supermarket trips or when I'm really not bothered, just as an alternative to flip-flops.

Just when you thought gladiators sandals had ended last year, Balenciaga extended the trend to this summer with this pair of heavily studded sandals from its SS07 collection.

This sort of T-bar sandals are a big hit this summer. It seems like everyone is wearing them! But if you have wide feel (like me) then you should probably avoid them. (This pair is by Top Shop.)

Patent leather is all the rage this season -there are now even patent leather gladaitor-ish sandals. Not sure I like them though. This pair is by Aldo.

Anthropologie has a lot of gladiator-ish sandals. I love this white pair. It's plain but not boring. On a second though, it sort of looks like the Balenciaga pair without all the studs doesn't it?

Another nice and comfortable-looking pair by Anthropologie.

This kind of sandals feels too bohemian for me. (This pair is from Urban Outfitters.) I like the more city-chic type, like the ones I chose above more.

As a last note, I just wanted to show that gladiator sandals look really terrible with winter clothes. Look at Mischa's outfit on the right -I love her Juicy white coat and skinny jeans combo, but those gladiator sandals really ruined the outfit. But on the left, the gladiators look relatively ok with that ourfit.
So yes, even though gladiator sandals are fading, I'm just discovering how comfortable they are. Oh well. What do you think? So you think the trend of gladiator-ish sandals will end this summer?

i agree, next summer gladiators are gone!

first time i saw this style of flat sandals i didn't like them, because i found it kinda ugly. But this summer, i started to like this style and i think topshop have some cool ones.

altough i'm not tall so, i don't use flat shoes or flat sandals often.

those from Anthropologie are also great!

I love the ones you bought, amazing colour :)

I thought they'd be out last year...haha. hey, if they stick around another year, they wouldn't be the worst trend for footwear.

Since I'm pretty short as well (exactly the same height as you or a 1/2 inch shorter) flat sandals like those DO NOT look cute on me. And I just don't like the style at all! Even though I really like the ones you boght because they aren't too gladior-ish, just sort of.
Anyways, I really think they are bound to be out by next year. I hope :)

i don't think that ALL flat sandals look bad on short girls. i feel that they can look more awkward wearing 3" espadrilles versus a simple flat sandal. avoiding sandals with ankle straps is key, as i feel they segment the leg line.

They look ok enough but I just don't like them. What other types of footwear would you suggest for short girls? I need something that's comfy enough for walking around all day in (for uni).

I like Gladiator Sandals a lot, but you're right they're totally ment for summer clothes.

Those Balenciaga ones I think are absolutely gross.
I also have wide feet so my feet in t-bar sandals aren't that great.

Those patent leather sandals by Aldo are nice, but I really don't like Aldo shoes, they're all really cheap (looking).

I like the white by Anthropologie, but idk about the second pair.

I absolutely love the sandals from Urban Outfitters, they kind of look like the ones Mischa is wearing on the right.

About your question I acutally think when summer comes around again they'll be a new big sandal everybody must have, probably not to different than the leather ones

Shopbop has a cute pair too by cocobelle. They've got the studs and seem pretty similar to the Balenciaga ones which are on everyone right now.

I'm short too and these shoes do not flatter me at all. However, if one must wear them, they seem best when they are more on the hippy/60s side, with small studs, or "Keep it simple, stupid" styles.

Seeing that it doesn't really show on Resort 2008's collection I doubt it's coming back!

Anyway I'm so used to having a little heel that I actually can trip wearing flats because I keep 'digging' into the ground. Glad Fall's coming so off with those flats!

For some reason, I am really into gladiator sandals this spring, after rolling my eyes for the last two summers at them. I did have to find ones with a small platform. WWhen will designers get that most people like a 1" platform. I wish Old Navy would bring out a platform non-wedge flip-flop again. They look better on everyone than the wedge!

It looks like gladiators are back for another season... although I have never been drawn to the trend, some styles this season have been catching my eye, but I think that I will hold off, because after this season, I am pretty sure they will go out of style.

I disagree that flat don't work on shorter women, although I think it looks better if the woman has a leaner frame.

Gladiators: stronger than ever.

I'm not going to buy them though, too much for the eye to take in. I'm not a fan of these, however, there are people who can pull them off.
