SS08: The "IT" Shoes

The other day when I was at the hair salon flicking through Vogue, I came across what they claimed to be the new "it" shoe this season- these Etro sandals below.
The term "it" shoes is apt. Cousin IT shoes that is. First Prada had these fringe things all over the place SS07, and now these shoes. Gladiator sandals with fringe piled on, I really don't see the attraction. They kind of look like sandals pretending to be boots or the other way around. Just not quite right.
No matter how they matched it on the Etro runway, there MUST be other better footwear out there to match these cute printed outfits. More simpler sandals perhaps? Heels? Barefoot??? Just when I thought perhaps it was just a one off random thing, I see the exact likeness on the Zara display window. For a moment I worried that this will become a prominent feature in daily fashion (it IS Zara after all). However, HG has convinced me that this is just one of those fashion items that are picked to featured to look cool (I don't know where they get these ideas from) but not really meant for mass consumption- or so I hope. Fingers crossed!

I mean, would YOU wear this????

I totally agree - those shoes are awful. I'm hoping that they aren't going to become a big thing. I saw some similar ones somewhere the other day - I can't remember where it was on some website - and I just can't imagine ever seriously wearing them. My fingers are crossed with you that the trend doesn't stick!

I think they are just terrible as well. I believe I saw Chanel with something like it. I can't imagine them to be too comfortable as well.

I agree with all of you, I don't think they are particularly attractive, nor would they be practical.

I think they look interesting from the front but the sides and back ruin it for me.

The Etro collection was probably my favourite of the whole SS08 season. I would absolutely wear those shoes.

Ugh those are terrible! (So of course, I'm sure they'll catch on, just like Crocs did!)

I'd never wear those!

they look so hideous up close and in front view picture they look like cute boots. I'll just have to seem em real life to decide if I like them or not, but I'm not a fan as of today. lol

Haha Chewbaca fur.

those are the ugliest friggin things I have ever seen in my life. it's like they said "screw the sides, use all the fabric for the fringe".

I must be a wierdo because I loooooooove these. I am so going to go to Zara and grab a pair! I already have a red ankle length tassled version from last summer but these knee length ones are fab!

I don't really like the open sides, but they remind me of those fringed minnetonka moccasin boots, which i adore

I hate them as much as I hate crocs. But crocs are supposedly super comfortable so people have a reason (not a great one) to wear them but these don't look comfy either.

funny b/c crocs are actually one of the best selling shoes in America. They are super cute on babies that's just about it. I definitely don't like these sandals btw just too much

Ewww, no. Those shoes are just...wrong. And I agree with Alice, crocs are cute on little kids but that's about it.

I'm just not a fan of fringe unfortunately, so I really don't like these shoes. They look alright on the runway though, so I guess some people could pull them off.

I think they're like fringe bags - with the right outfit you can pull it off and even look great, but it's not something I think would look good on me :)

I mean, someone has to love them for them to be copied by Zara. Even in the comments here, there;s people who would wear them (and probably wear them really well).

I'm a fringe-freak and I adore these shoes, I had no idea they were IT shoes already, I just saw them on the etro runway and it way love on first sight! It's for those of us who want to wear minnetonkas but don't want stinking feet in the summer. I'm not sure how flattering on the leg they would be though, I think they would only look good on long, skinny legs. So I have my eye on these ones instead:

I've been loving all the peek-a-boo style going on with the boot pumps and wide strap on strappy sandals. I thought I've made them my It sandals/boots until I saw these!!! :D

Don't like those sandals at all. And crocs are ugly AND uncomfortable, I tried them on once and I hope I don't ever again. They were too spongy and heavy and they just felt wrong on my feet. Those sandals don't look too comfy either, or practical. Anyways, love your blog.

I am soooo enamoured of these achingly fab sandals that I've been trawling the net trying to find them. I refuse to give up - I simply must have them!!!!!!!!!!

I think these shoes are great! I bought the ankle height fringe sandals from Zara and I love them! I'm not wearing the tall Etro sandals (obviously the more toned down ankle height), but I do appreciate them for what they are. I don't claim to be an expert but as a designer in women's fashion shoes I wish more women would have fun with their footwear!!!~

to be completely honest:
I usually agree with your postings, however, I disagree with your opinion on the shoes. I think I would wear them.
I think they are original, and give of a very hippie-chic/bohemian feel.
Maybe they're just not your style?
