America's Top Model Quits Modelling

~phew~ I'm finally done with finals and am back in the world of fashion. So it seems that America's Next Top Model's, "Top Model," Tyra Banks, is going to quit modelling. And if you ask me, the timing couldn't be better.

She looks fabulous, she got to choose which stunning outfit to wear on her last runway (a rare treat) and everyone knows who she is! And for a 32 year old model, what better way is there to retire from modelling? As she said wanted in her interview with the AP, she's leaving on top. Better to have a dramatic halt to a dazzling career than fading into anonymity as you grow old and beauty and youth fails you, right?

And honestly, its no big loss to us. She hasn't been on the runway for some time anyway. In fact, if it wasn't for her show, America's Next Top Model, I don't even think I'd know who she is! And I don't think this is just me either. It applies to all those who were not "fashion aware" in the early 90's-when her modelling career was "kicking off"-as well.

So for those who don't know, in the 90's she was featured on many magazine covers. And more importantly, the Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Issue cover, which I do believe is a very sought after cover to be on (wasn't there a show some time ago about a competition to be on the cover of it?) And of course, she is in the Victoria's Secret catalog. She also recieved a Michael Award (apparently the "Oscars of fashion")for "Supermodel of the Year."
But since ANTM is still running and her talking show career is just kicking off- I don't think we will "miss" her much at all in her "retirement".

I just want to say thanks for contributing a blog to Tyra. Although she is annoying at times, I feel as though she definitely is a super model. It is also refreshing to see a model featured for retiring on top as opposed to their dealings with drugs, sex, cat fights etc. Once again THANKS!!

I don't give a boo about Tyra, she is a fat hypocrite, GASP yes I said fat, anyhow, she proclaims to be so real, so comfortable with herself, which translates to,
" I'm a larda**, who still wants to get top modeling jobs" all of that aside, I don't see how any observant person couldn't notice her NOSEJOB, she is so fugly and fake for having one, basically she succumbed to the typical white standards of beauty to garner more work, so as far as I'm concerned that makes her whole being dishonest and fraudulent. Positively repulsive. Also, none of the broads on ANTM will ever work with prestigious designers and have the careers that the real TOP models, such as natalia, gemma, kate,liya..and countless others have.

I agree with that, I know this blog is about tyra's farewell but did you see the top model reunion for this cycle she was still trying to act like Cassandra was wrong for leaving and modeling is just like pagents(they are not the same). In pagents your hair, your clothes, and what you say is up to you win or lose you make the choices. And guess what as a model if you dont want to cut all your hair off you look for jobs were they want models with hair. Anyway.

On her fairwell
I like tyra but she does not work as hard as someone like Naomi to keep her body in shape. At the beginning of top model this year she looked like she lost weight but by the time of VS show she must have gained it back. That was disappointing to me, I dont think she looked as good as she could have. Its your final show, come on.

Hi, doing some research and came across your blog, nice work. I wanted to comment on a few things though. I am a woman's rights advocate and work in politics, and one of the issues I confront is the sweatshops/exploitation of womyn globally. Another issue is the obsession with beauty, particularly the unrealistic kind in our nation and other parts of the world. When browsing through the photographs I was shocked at how 'thin' the majority of the models were. I mean, oh my god they look like Auschwitz survivors. The one thing I admire most about Tyra is that she is challenging the entire industry and the notions of what defines beauty. (its there in the Top Model shows if one is paying attention) I love fashion, always have but I detest the industry, because of the means in which the art is used to commodify and define for womyn what beauty is, rather than womyn being beautiful for who they are naturally, for their contributions to the world. Another thing I wanted to comment on was the remark about Tyra retiring before age and beauty fades...like, wtf? Since when did age mean losing beauty? I'm 42 and still am beautiful, sure, I have a few lines around my eyes, those are visual lines that show all the beauty and sorrow I've seen in the world, eyes that have looked upon lovers (which I've had a few) and children, mine. I have those lines between my brows, those are my pathway to life lines that reveal the wisdom I have learned through the years of studying and reading the numerous works of authors, many of them womyn (classics, philosophy, politics, art theory, biographies of radical womyn, poetry, etc). There is no way I'd ever have botox injections, because it is crazy to inject so close to your brain toxins! Harmful toxins at that. I doubt seriously if there has been that much testing and like the breast implants I hate to see what the future reveals, when brains start deteriorating. But I suppose, that beauty according to the definitions of capitalist market, far outweigh the importance of a woman's mind, her mental capability to produce not just works, but legends. Men would not take such risks, not for the reasons womyn do.

Don't you think its time womyn stop internalizing self-hate and contempt for age? I have met numerous womyn who are in their seventies, who are very beautiful, who still attract men and who still wear classy fashions and present themselves quite well, without surgery, without shame and without self-condemnation. Beauty really is how one perceives themselves, and rather than saying with age fades beauty, maybe its better said, that with age comes a variety of beauties, the revelation of the goddess in each of us. In tribal societies and in many regions of the world, womyn who have aged are deemed the powerful and most of all, beautiful. The contempt towards womyn and age is an American concept, its time to dump it. Its like hanging on to baggage, and it definately is not, good fashion.

Blah...Blah...Blah, Alexia. You wouldn't be preaching this inner beauty crap if you were 25 years old and 36-24-36. Grow up! Society is all about exterior beauty. That's what sells, and we would all sell it if we had it. Tyra is a model. That's all modelling is -- outer beauty. It doesn't mean that you have to embrace it, but people who want to be rich and famous are selling it hard.

truth be told, I don't think Tyra was fat AT ALL! in fact, I think some of the other models were *gasp* too skinny!

and she's part white isn't she? Just like Vanessa Williams?

(the average age of model retirement is 24)

to alexia-
i think you made some good points. our society is far too superficial and obssessed with vanity most of the time.
to anonymous-
I think that was a cheap shot. i personally am 21, pretty close to a 36-24-36 body, and have done some modelling myself. all i have to say is that anyone who lives only to become rich and famous is destined live a pretty sad and empty life; there is much more to life than being the most beautiful. maybe you will figure that out for yourself one day.

TYRA IS NOT HALF WHITE AND NEITHER IS VANESSA WILLIAMS. VANESSA'S PARENTS LOOK JUST LIKE HER. TYRA'S MOTHER IS A DARK COMPLEXIONED BLACK WOMAN (HAS BEEN ON HER SHOW SEVERAL TIMES) AND HER DAD IS A MEDIUM COMPLEXIONED BLACK MAN.

God has truly created beautiful things and Tyra Banks is certainly one of them. Her beautiful spirit from within outshines any physical attributes she is blessed with. Some of you sadly are the type of people she has had to face with strength and adversity and still she has risen. To whom much is given, much is expected and she keeps on giving...maybe you should try it instead of being jealous and critical. What could she possibly have done to you personally to make you envy her so much. I will pray for you but also thank you for your hateful transgressions because they seem just to give her more strength. May God bless you...her has definitely blessed TYRA BANKS!!!
