SS06 Fashion Don't: Bling Bling
I have been brainstorming for ages of what to write as a fashion "don't". The problem with living in London is that everyone is so well dressed I can't get inspired by people in the streets. Then finally it hit me, I HATE bling!
Bling is something I have hated every since well, forever. For those who aren't completely sure what bling is, it's basically draping yourself in huge, obnonxious, overbearing jewelry. Bling is pretty much an essential in the culture of hip hip. The whole trend of hip hop was brought to a high a few years ago when performers thought it was just oh-so-attractive to wear eye-catching jewelry, whether male or female. And of course, since singers decided it was cool to wear bling, their fans thought it might be cool to imitate them too. This fugly fashion of bling also extends to styles such as wearing sportswear with bling jewelry and encrusting diamonds onto all your accessories etc.

Yuck yuck yuck! I esp hated those huge gold necklaces with the dollar sign. Talk about poor taste.
Now in 2006, we are all about the sophistication, new minimalism and quality luxuries. So unless you're a serious hip-hopper, here's the message just in case you still don't get it: Stop wearing bling!

Ooo yes. Definitely a fashion don't.
UNLESS of course it's a huge clock, like Flava-Flav, in which case it's form AND function. Just kidding. It all scares the crap out of me. I'm so jealous that you live in London.
THANK YOU!!!!
wearing excessive bling has been out for a while. hip hop culture, more recently, has gone the route of dressing up, looking crisp. you can see that with the larger number of artists following kanye's lead and pairing blazers with a nice pair of pants. sure there are still artists sporting the jerseys and baggy pants and layers of bling. but when you have artists like p. diddy who have a large financial stake in zac posen, you know that there's something changing. even the decline of large logos in favor of more sophisticated consumption among a large number of artists is yet another indication.
I agree with the bling. it's tacky and attracts eye-rolls.
but. . .
I am up for wearing faux bling for fun.
a la sienna miller/ kate moss
and long thin gold chains ( see david yurman) are seen around the necks of everyone, and every once in a while you spot someone having fun with it and adding faux bling
Ciao
I have a chunky dollar sign ring that i wear every day ^_^ it's a very simple design though, and silver. I wear it because i'm studying economics and it always gets a laugh from the professors.
Are You the New Avante Garde: I don't consider thin gold necklaces bling. Thin gold necklaces are excellent accessories. And I think the ones Sienna Miller/ Kate Moss wear are considered more of a boho luxe style rather than bling. So ya......
Oh i know! it just doesn't seem likely that they would sport ghetto gold, but I swear it's true. It was featured in Teen Vogue a 1 or 2 months ago. In addition to the thin Yurman chains, they had big ghetto gold.
Ciao
Harrods Girl, I think I you may be a little anti-Harrods today! I was paging through British Vogue and came across a gold chain necklace by Balenciaga from Harrods...the spread invites us all to indulge our ghetto-fabulous streaks with Balenciaga's street smart chain and knotted pendant for a mere 680 pounds.
Lol, oh dear. the funny subject of BLING. Well it really doesn't apply to any of the readers of this blog im sure, but i will tell you that it does look fine on all the rappers because that is what they are. They like INTRODUCED BLING to the world. Hence, it's fine on them and i will not disturb that.
Oh but by the way - i completely agree with all you other girls. Gold necklaces are HOT right now. That IS NOT bling though.
I've always thought that it would be fun to have a big ass diamond grill though.
All for irony's sake, of course.
But if you wear bling seriously you just look like an idiot now.

You hate bling? I totally agree with you.
I have another one for you. Sure blinG is a total yuK in joulary. But I have seen in the streets an adapted 'bling with stras' on hats, belts, shoes! Urg. so nasty!
In complete agreement - 'bling' is tacky, tacky, tacky!
I think it depends on who wears it even it is tacky or not.

OH yes, bling is cheap and fake looking at the least. I do love fine jewelry designers jewelry such as david yurman and tiffany however the prices are so exuberant, I just can't afford changing styles as fast as fashion changes. I did hop onto this site that has designer inspired jewelry in sterling silver for a fraction of the price of the original.

Do you think I can trust it?

You are absolutely right!
It is fashion don't! Those who have now sense of style have to go for an expert in jewelry. Thats how it works.
Bling will never die! Haha!!!
