The Shirt and the Tie

For quite a few seasons now, magazines have reported the trend of girls dressing like guys, ie. wearing shirts and ties together. Now I have never quite understood this trend. I mean, I think it was cool when Avril wore it a few years ago when she was in her so-called punk rock mood. And it's fun when people wear it as a costume, such as in Halloween or themed parties. Honestly, I can't see how this style works in real life but the SS06 runways certainly seemed to like it:

Karen Walker and Lanvin had skinny ties. Very classy and girly.

The ties and shirts are made of exactly the same prints at Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs.

Lanvin makes the ties look professional.

The shirt and tie combination looked cool and casual at Belstaff and Chloe.

Personally, I've only ever worn a tie with my school uniform (that was when I was younger). But casually, I'm way too chicken to try. Anyone here wears ties as normal casual wear?

I find it really looks too contrived. Like "look at me i'm trying too hard to look fashionable and be different". Although I do like the Belstaff outfit with the tie because I think it fits nicely with the look. There's something else that's bugging me about the ties but I can't really pin point it. I just keep thinking that every outfit is just completely ruined with those ugly intrusions. In any case, I would never wear one - I think ties should stay on school uniforms.

This is a rerun of a brief early- to mid-80s trend. I regret having tried this once--never again.

I have always loved wearing ties. I think I have worn them for years. It could be because I never had to wear a uniform that I like them so much. I think ties just really suit SOMEPEOPLE and somepeople's bodytype.
Its not for everyone, but I dig it.

i've worn ties a couple of times..mostly when i'm with my boyfriend,i just steal his (cos he's too lazy to tie it, but our uni's dress code is really strict and guys have to wear ties,or in his case, carry them around in his pocket!)...but it was all for fun..i've never actually planned to incorporate a tie into my outfit..(i mostly wear pencil skirts and button down shirts to uni..and sometimes the ties go quite nicely with them)

I actually really detest this option. I just dont think it looks right in any way. The only one in my opinion which pulls it off is the Karen Walker one and quite possibly the second Lanvin one. Not forgetting these are models, so there really doesn't seem much hope for us norms wearing them and looking remotely decent.

And I HATED Avrils tie thing. Ugh.

I've tried wearing it with my ruffled Jessica shirt and plaid shorts...I felt like a Japanese schoolgirl, but I think it should be worn not as often as a uniform as to not take away its charm.

yeah, i've got one skinny vintage tie in red/black thick stripes. i wear it occasionally to work to dress up a plain short-sleeved shirt, with pants for the boyish look or with structured skirts for a preppy schoolgirl look.

i think it's a nice look to be worn occasionally. thick normal-sized ties are a nono for girls.

I have a narrow J Crew tie in red and navy stripes that looks great a little loose with a white button down and this navy Ralph Lauren crested balzer. It's very Ivy League but then I wear heels and I have short platnum hair-- it's a really fun look. I love it!

I really like this look, but I'm a little too lumpy to actually wear it myself. I love Karen Walker's outfit because I think it maintains a huge "girly" element with the puffball skirt and the shapes are different enough to not look androgynous like some of the others. One of my friends has worn an outfit quite a lot like the KW one you've got up there and it looked really quite nice, albeit overdressed for uni. I'd love to try it at some point, but I have my reservations.

i dont really believe in fashion rules i hate it when people go on about how things are a big 'nono' its stupid....if the tie looks good with the outfit then wear it if not then dont, each to his/her own.I personally like ties and i wear one of my boyfriends ties every now and then it gives the outfit a little something.

fashion like many other things are in the eye of the beholder. i wore them 35 years ago. people laughed then. i do agree that skinny is better. girls need to keep their femininity.

i'm not too keen on this look but if i were to go for it, i would wear the tie loosely like a scarf, something like this (although it wouldn't be a tie to begin with).

The only way I've worn a tie, is somewhat like the last pic on the left. With a mini skirt, or something ultra-girly. Not a big fan of the tie being the same color as the shirt.

I like the look of ties being worn by the waitresses at the olive garden, but some of them can't tie a tie as some of them have their ties crooked, or their collar is sticking up or their tie is partly tied outside of their collar.

While there has been a great deal of conjecture over the cause of the toxic algae bloom, there is no evidence that it is being caused by pollution or that there has been an increase in the duration or frequency of red tides.

The population was divided into iwi (tribes) and hapū (subtribes) which would cooperate, compete and sometimes fight with each other. At some point a group of Māori migrated to the Chatham Islands (which they named Rēkohu) where they developed their distinct Moriori culture.[27][28] The Moriori population was decimated between 1835 and 1862,

The relative peace maintained by the empire during much of the 17th century was a factor in India's economic expansion,[62] resulting in greater patronage of painting, literary forms, textiles, and architecture.[65] Newly coherent social groups in northern and western India, such as the Marathas, the Rajputs, and the Sikhs, gained military and governing ambitions during Mughal rule, which, through collaboration or adversity, gave them both recognition and military experience.[66] Expanding commerce during Mughal rule gave rise to new Indian commercial and political elites along the coasts of southern and eastern India.

Successive Vietnamese royal dynasties flourished as the nation expanded geographically and politically into Southeast Asia, until the Indochina Peninsula was colonized by the French in the mid-19th century. The First Indochina War eventually led to the expulsion of the French in 1954, leaving Vietnam divided politically into two countries. Fighting between the two sides continued, with heavy foreign intervention, during the Vietnam War, which ended with a North Vietnamese victory in 1975.

Vietnam's independence was gradually eroded by France – aided by large Catholic collaborator militias – in a series of military conquests between 1859 and 1885, after which the entire country became part of French Indochina. The French administration imposed significant political and cultural changes on Vietnamese society. A Western-style system of modern education was developed, and Roman Catholicism was propagated widely in Vietnamese society. Most of the French settlers in Indochina were concentrated in Cochinchina – the southern third of Vietnam – based around the city of Saigon.
