Product Fast
And so, during my last finals week when I hibernated in my room for 5 whole days trying to write papers and study (I really was rewatching Sex and the City), I went on a product fast. No toner. No moisturizer. Just soap and water.
The end result was that I got a chance to really go back to the beginning and pinpoint what my skin really need- hydration, exfoliation and more hydration. My skin really really lacked water! Another thing that came out of this product fast of mine was that I got to see if the products I am using made a difference or not. I'm happy to report that it does.
So ultimately, I ended up pretty much where I started with in this product fast of mine. But I feel that this experience was totally worth the nakedness I felt in those five days I didn't go through my beauty ritual, because it made me remember the real reason why I was following a beauty ritual everyday. And now I'm not just doing it for the sake of doing it but because I need it.

I sort of went thru a similar product fast after my daughter was born 3 years ago. The first few days were such a blur and we had just moved into a new place. So most of my stuff was still packed. So I went about a week with just soap and water.
Same conclusion. At the time, I thought it was cause of the new baby and lack of sleep, etc. But once I started using my products again, I felt better and my skin was better.
My younger sister (30 yo), who has always had the most beautiful skin (everyone who sees her says that) only uses soap and water. It's their skin type, they're lucky!
i've heard that toner is pretty much useless and a way for companies to get more $ for selling it. I'm using toner right now..it makes me feel refreshed..but thinking about it, i really don't see the point of it. What do you(Barney's Girl/Harrods Girl) or anyone else reading this think about this?
I think it depends on your skin type. I have to wash my face twice a day...WITH PRODUCTS, unlike my cousin who wears her makeup to bed and only washes her face in the shower with soap and water. She has flawless skin that always seems to be glowing, while in my case, washing my face with soap and water results in really dry skin and itching. I end up with tiny bumps all over my face(not breakouts). Unlike those lucky few...I need products!
I go through toner pretty fast, so there are a lot of times I run out of toner so I'd go 3-4 days without using it. I've found that toner prepares the skin for moisturizer as well as picks up any dirt left behind by your cleanser. If I use toner my moisturizer absorbs into my skin much better ans faster whereas without it, it just kinda "sits" on top of my skin.
I think rather than going back to "nakedness" with your product fast you actually ended up stripping your skin of moisture that's why your skin felt drier than with products.
I used to use SO much product on my skin, especially products for my naturally oily skin; special cleaners, toner, exfoiliator, everything. But I was still breaking out. Then i gave up and started using Dove soap (unscented) every morning and night, and a St. Ives apricot scrub once a week. My skin has NEVER looked better. I haven't had a pimple in a year, my pores are tight and tiny, and my skin is soft to the touch. Seriously. And I wasn't born with flawless skin or anything either! I recommend everyone try a break from product- less is better!
That is interesting. Thanks for sharing. I really like St. Ives Apricot Scrub. I think that is all I use. Except! I would like to get some Clinique All About Eyes Moisturizer. Every girl needs some form of moisturizer.
MaryBeth take my advice and use anything BUT clinique all about eyes moisturiser- it feels terrible, is incredibly expensive and does nothing for the eyes! I was really disapointed as normally I like Clinique products. I think Simplicite makes a good eye cream or if you want something cheaper try Loreal.
Can someone please give me advice on the Clinique Turnaround Cream. Ive used it from 3 months now. I think it's pretty good, but I dont know if I should buy another one.
I really think it depends on your skin type...
okay, so toner removes residue or whatever, but what is in it that they are charging so much for it?: some combination of water, alcohol, citric acid, and/or witch hazel. these are all really cheap ingredients. i use an alcohol swab--very cheap in bulk. plus it kills germs. my face isn't dry so this works for me.
I really only use body/face soap and water on my face since I have normal skin. I do have a t-zone, though, so I blot them with my lifesaver: Clearasil blotting papers. I love them!
i dont use anything but water, not even soap! my skin stays pretty clear thankfully, and people always ask what products do i use. i'll only use cleanser on my eye area if i've had eyeliner/mascara there, and occasionally moisturiser if i feel my skin is dry. make-up counter girls are always like "NOOO u need this product and that product to look after ur skin" but really we know they are just after our money! how come those girls living out in africa/asia and other non-western nations have the clearest skin and no clinque counters?!
I agree that skin type plays really important role in that what cosmetic products you need to use. And the first thing everyone should do - it's define her(his) skin type.
