Pirates of the Caribbean III

One of my most anticipated movies of the year, I very excitedly went to see it the first day it was out. And no, I was not one of those people who went to see it at midnight dressed in Pirate costumes. Although I must say, I did see a few on the streets and the effort put into these costumes is to be commended.
Anyways, onto the movie (and if you don't want to know what happens next- time to stop!). This time it talks about how the crew sails to the World's End to save Captain Jack Sparrow, who got eaten by Davy Jones in the last movie. First they sailed to Singapore to find the Chinese Pirate, Sao Feng (played by Chow Yun-Fat), to get a ship and to steal/get the map to go to the World's End. I'm not sure I like the portrayal of "Chinese" culture here, I've been there and in any century, Singapore is not like that and I don't think they speak Cantonese there. But then again, I guess this movie IS fictional and a lot of things (like immortal squid monster pirates) don't exist.
So they sail to the World's End and saves Jack, who in turn very cleverly leads them back into the real world, where they are accosted by Pirate Sao Feng and people from the East India Company and a whole lot of treachery occurs. So much that I couldn't even keep track. But everything just turns out so perfectly, that one wonders if they (esp Jack's many escapes) planned it or were just spontaneously clever and lucky.
But the basic idea is that Will Turner wants to fight the Flying Dutchman to save his father, who we discovered has gone mentally crazy and all, until the very end.
Meanwhile, Davy Jone's heart lands in the hands of the East India Company and he follows their command, threatening the power of the 9 pirate lords of the sea.
So they all convene to their private lair, Shipwreck something I think, and have a meeting. Here, Captain Barbossa comes back from the dead (first movie) and tries to convince everyone to free the Calipsa, to get the power of the sea back or something.
And Calipsa turns out to be the voodoo woman who seems to know everything from the last movie. Turns out, she's also the reason Davy Jones cut his heart out and everything. Eventually she does get set free, but I don't really see what use it was as she turned into a pile of crabs and created a storm.
Into all this is Elizabeth, who by pure chance, becomes the leader of the Chinese Pirates and the "King" of Pirates by vote. She then declares war to the East India Company and all the other pirates had to heed her. She actually played a really big role in this movie.
Oh and in the heat of battle, she and Will gets married, which I thought was really cute. But then again, marriage with Will (or whatever role Orli is playing) would be cute in any circumstances :PDoesn't he look so handsome and piratey? He SO does not look girly.... I was REALLY sad when he died. I was worried that he'd look like an ugly squid when he turned into the captain of the Flying Dutchman, but luckily he came back and looked handsomer than ever. Just one question, does that mean that after 10 years of doing his duty, he and Elizabeth can live happily ever after should they stick together? Or that they are just doomed to be forever seperated, and Will will remain young forever and Elizabeth will get old and die?
And then of course there is Captain Jack Sparrow himself. Whenever I see him, I can't help but admire the amazing make-up and Johnny Depp's acting. Johnny Depp just looks soooo unlike Captain Jack Sparrow!

Although what was with all the hullucinating of multiple Jack Sparrows? That was kind of weird. And at many points, I didn't know whether to like or hate him, because there were so many betrayals between all the characters that its hard to tell!

Overall the movie was.....very complex. For the whole 2 hr and 45 minutes, we all just sat there trying to follow and figure out what is happening. And to be honest, 3 hours after watching the movie, I still haven't quite figured everything out. Like, what is the point of freeing the Calipsa? And why do they even bother fighting against the Flying Dutchman? They're immortal! Their ship won't sink and their crew can't die. But I did so love all the little funny bits. Like the adorable monkey, the get up of the french and chinese woman pirate lord and everything that Jack said!

I'm surprised to hear that there may be a fourth one coming out.....I think its better to stop at three before it feels too much like they're trying to make a movie out of nothing.

I want to have a fourth Pirates movie even if I didn't like this one, because I don't want to see Will and Elizabeth see each other only once every ten years! How cruel is that!? It made me very mad and sad T___T" This third movie is confusing and all but then again, it's still entertaining...

Yeah, I hated the portrayal of the Singapore... Specially the prostitutes standing outside that place.. The Cantonese thing was weird too.. since I speak Mandarin, when that part came up I was, "what..?"

The place was called Shipwreck Cove.. and when Calypso was freed.. I guess she was like neutral or something? That's why she didn't attack either sides. She wanted to kill the pirates lords who bounded her... but when she was freed, Will said something to her about Davey Jones... so yeah, I guess she was torn? (I watched the movie twice & finally understood it!)

Apparently, after the credits there was a scene where Will meets Elizabeth and their child ten years later on a island. There was a scene cut from the film which explains that after 10 years if the lover remains true to the captain of the Flying Duchman... he becomes free... (Davey Jones wasn't free because of Tia Dalma's/Calypso's unfaithfulness.)

I adore your blog, but lately it seems you have been posting less about fashion and more of a standard blog. Is this what your blog is evolving into or is it just a slight digression?

1. They do speak Cantonese in Singapore.
2. Elizabeth didn't become the leader by chance, Chow Yun Fat gave her the power & the necklace.
3. If you've stayed after the credits, you WOULD see what would happen 10 years later.
4. He was hallucinating since he was all alone.
5. They needed Calypso, the godess's help that why they freed her.
6. They fought against the Flying Dutchman because of Will's wishes to save his father and other reasons.
7. You have many spelling errors. :)

Good summary of the movie! Yes, there is a small bit after the credits that shows Keira and a small boy "10 years later" waiting for Orlando's boat. It comes over the horizon (green light flashes) and they look happy. Thats it. It is a VERY short scene and requires about 10 mins of waiting for all the credits to be through.

1. Wow, someone is passive aggressive.
2. There really weren't that many spelling errors.
3. Good job trying to answer the questions and prove to the blogger that the movie was perfect, even though she gave the movie a positive reaction.

It was so sexy when Will was nuzzling Elizabeth's leg! I've never seen Orlando look so good as he did then. Meow. ;)

In the theatre I was in, lots of people clapped when it was over. I guess they were impressed.

Since Elizabeth was faithful to him and Orlando did his job of escorting dead pirates to the after world, after 10 years, he was relieved of his duty and allowed to come back to the land of the living.

Since Calypso was NOT faithful and Davy did not do the job properly (he basically went around in the land of the living terrorizing pirates and forcing them into his crew), he turned squid-like and ugly.

They actually filmed footage explaining this but it was cut out, especially since the movie was already 2 hr 4 mins long.

Anyway, the big green zap means souls have returned to the living. At the end of the movie (past the credits), a big green zap shows up and it's Will coming back to the land of the living, having fulfilled his 10 year duty.

Hi,

Im from Singapore so just a some general comments.

1) Singaporeans do speak Cantonese. Chinese from all over China came to work in Singapore and they brought their dialects over. I am Cantonese by the way. hahah

2) Singapore used to be a pirate hangout. This was way before the East India Company was formed. Singapore was known as Temasek back then.

Just some general knowledge. On a totally random note, I bought Smashbox O-glow after reading about it on this blog and it works :)

1. Calypso not Calypsa. They freed her because she's the goddess (?) of the sea and they wanted her help.
2. Maybe I misunderstood this part, but isn't Will immortal now? He's at sea for 10 years and gets 1 day on land. Every 10 years. That’s why Jack wanted to be the Captain of the Flying Dutchman, immortality.
3. They fight the Dutchman because there is no other option. Elizabeth is king and chose to fight; the Dutchman is in the control of the East Indian Trading company and therefore is against them. Why did they fight Barbossa when he was immortal? Because it's not a true immortality. And the creatures/sailors weren’t immortal.
4. Sao Feng gave over command to Elizabeth because he thought she was Calypso.

^more than one person have stated that a spoiler warning would have been nice. thus it's safe to say that yes, more careful reading should have been done in part of the reader, but also that the warning was not clearly visible, and the writer should put more effort into making a more effective warning in the future. Personally, I thought it was a fantastic Movie. To clear a fe things up for people, though:

1. Will itsnt immortal any more, he's back to normal because he completed his duty. Davy jones was immortal because of calypso's un-faithfulness and because he didnt do his job so he had to suffer.

2. Calypso...not Calypsa...was freed to help the pirates, but she just kinda went away to get revenge for improsining her, and to help them bu making a storm so the english would get fritened.

3. If they DO make another one, ti will be about their Child. Will and elizabeth will not be in it for contract reasons

This movie is great . i don't kno what any of you are talking about but i took my baby sister to see it and she understood perfectly. I LOOOOOVVVVEEE johnny depp and orli in it. But maybe i understood it becuase i can understand syblimnal messages. On the contrary it's cruel that they can only see each other every ten years but i wonder what would happen if will's father tried to sacrifce himself for his son. Would will die ? i guess we have to wait for the next movie to come out.
( i heard there are supposed to be a 4,5,&6)

the movie is amazing! me and my sister love it and i think it would be cool if there were more sequels. just not to the point where they ruin it, but jack's so hot, i don't think they can :)

if u buy the dvd, (which i just did) there is a peice of paper in it that has questions and answeres from the movie and it said that Will is bound to the Dutchmen forever. i thought that that was unfair! :(

12/28/2007 10:10 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

yeah will can come back after 10 years and be done w/ dutchman duties since elizabeth was faithful... one question about that though.
you know how "the dutchman must always have a captain"..? well if will is relieved of his duties then whos to sail the dutchman?
ehh idk im thinkin he might have to do it forever... that makes me so sad :( :( :(

anyways,i absolutley loved this movie, though i had to watch it a few times to get everything.. im in love with this whole trilogy.
and great blog!
