Classic Burberry Trenches

Ahh the trench coat. The wardrobe staple that every chic girl in town has that never goes out of style and is perfect with everything, over jeans, suits, skirts and dresses. My friend had one last year when we were studying abroad in Europe and she wore it all the time for everything- perhaps beside a jaunt on a paddling boat in the river at Versailles where we could've possibly capsized- but that is understandable. So inspired, this fall, I decided to have a look myself.
Naturally if one is going to splurge on a trench coat, one should splurge it on a Burberry. You can't get more classic than Burberry. They truly never go out of style and will last you forever
- unless you have a sudden huge change in body shape, but that is unlikely. They are perfect for all ages. But anyway, just look how cool Gweneth Paltrow and Kate Bosworth look in their Burberry trenches! I am especially inspired by Kate Bosworth updating the classic look with ankle boots, which we will still be seeing a lot of this season.
I always thought that for the classic, there only is one style. But turns out it is not quite as simple. So lets go back to the beginning and start with the very classic one: the hazelmere (or I think that is what they are called). Basically this is the trench coat that is more loosely fitted with a broader shoulder designed to be worn over a suit. This is one of the reasons I want one, because I can never figure out what to wear over my business suit in winter that will look appropriate, though to be honest, it is actually very thin and I don't think it would provide much warmth- even if it does come with an extra layer inside. I looked at ones with extra layers and they are very thin, even though they say they are made of wool, it will never survive a Chicago winter. Besides, it doesn't look very good if I wasn't planning on wearing a suit underneath (very loosely fitted) and I am looking for more versatility in my trench.
After that one... I lost the order of trench evolution. But anyway there is this harbourne, that stops mid thigh, which is less bulky and more fitted.
And then there is the Ivybridge, which is what Gweneth and Kate has on. This is also more slimming and goes almost to the knee, which I think is more classic and gives the body a more elongated look. Actually this is the perfect style trench out of the lot. The only problem is that the extra winter layer they offer is terribly thin (as I was saying before....) and it cannot fit a suit underneath, so its quite seasonal really. I could've sworn that my friend's trench had a thicker and warmer extra layer.... I'll check. I wish they had one that combined all my practical needs and didn't have to compromise the cutting.

But oh the less practical ones look so chic and smart on! I want one! I was thinking of this beige color since it IS the original color and we are going for classic here, but Gweneth and Kate looks soo cool in their black one as well. Oh the choices!!!

Go with black! It's the most slimming, the most classic, and the most chic. I got a black trench recently and have worn it nonstop, it goes with everything!

Looking at Kate Bosworth, maybe you guys should think about on principle not posting pics of models/celebrities who are obviously anorexic. I realise your focus is on the trench coat and not her, but its the same argument as why fashion models shouldn't be given exposure on a runway if they're under a certain size.

I really love trenches. You said that anyone can wear them (and it's true). But I (get ready) am only 13, but really love fashion. And I don't think it will fit my age for me to wear a trenches. Excapt I'm going to NYC in the winter, and I will need it. So any help? (I really like Ivybridges)

trenchcoats are great, but no way are they going to take anyone through a midwestern winter. you should just get the unlined trench you really like for fall/spring and get a cozy wool coat for winter. the trench can see you through quite a lot of cold weather with some cozy sweaters and layering. but when the single digits and snow hit you gotta have a REAL coat! ;-)

Nothing beats Burberry. If your looking to be kept warm thorugh winter, a trench coat might not always work. But still it's tottaly worth it to have one, they are so practical.

Grace if you are 13, I'd recomend a nice peacoat instead of a trench coat, it's more young

I agree with the comments about Kate Bosworth. Her face and outfit are lovely - young, fresh and chic. But her body looks so skeletal. Her legs and the wrinkly, saggy skin on them look like those of a frail old lady. She used to look a lot more healthy and exponentially more gorgeous.

I got the Ivybridge in black recently. It is very versatile and chic. I got it a size up so I could still fit a suit jacket underneath. It still looks good with normal clothes, just fits a little looser. If you are considering a trench coat, you should go to the Burberry store instead of a department store. I was in Bergdorf and the salespeople were useless.

It is fantastic to see these coats back. For the shorter lady, they look great with trousers and I particularly love the cream coloured coats with a black polo and black slacks.

I'm also worried about it being too long on me! (I'm 5'2'')

And... for those of us without $1000 to spend on a trench, perhaps some lower-priced options??

some ppl have shoe fetish.. some have handbag fetish.. mine is definitely the trench fetish.. i buy a trench every year, because i cant afford the burberry, and i'm in an endless quest to find the perfect trench.. so i'd like to share my experiences of affordable-trench buying :)
1-Make it double breasted!
2-Be careful about the contrast and size of the buttons. you dont want to look too "mod"..
3-The shoulders should not be too hard, they should rest loosely on your shoulders. The fabric must not be too stiff.. And make sure your trench has a good lining, preferably a lining with a pattern, it's very important to make it look classy..

If i were to buy a Burberry, which i'm soon planning to do, i'd definitely go with the beige. You definitely need a black trench(i wear mine like crazy) but great black trenches are easier to come by, but beige trenches shows flaws more, and the tone is never exactly great, so the quality has to be excellent..

Grace, i agree with the comment about wearing a peacoat instead of a trench.. You could also opt for a nylon trench with a bright color instead, or you could try the short trench, in a more youthful color instead of beige or black, like white, navy, or even olive if you spice up the rest of your outfit, or have youthful details such as a peter-pan collar instead of a normal one..

Just about everyone can afford a Burberry trench. No, really. Just head to a consigment shop uptown or to an upscale trift stores. Head to the trendy or to the posh places. Mine and my boyfriend's about were about $150 each. Mine is from the early 1960s but it's in perfect condition.

Finally gone, my amazing Bberry trech - my great friend! got 15 years ago, and as blogger mentioned, is wearable to just about everything! I wore mine under cas skirt/sweaters, and t's/jeans! loved wearing on planes and to movies - cuz great blanket (big - can share w/ my man).. I also wore just about everyday WITH biz suits... looks classy, subtley provides crediability... once winter arrived (in DC) could add liner, and fine.. really only couldn't wear to dressy events like the Oprea/Theatre, black tie events... best part of mine = got the brushed cotton (against Bberry store advisors counsel) and every few years had to have sleeves and hem taken up due to frays... well, turns out Bberry will not accept any payment for this -- had done about 5 times (and tried more & more to pay for this tailoring), they wouldn't hear of it... amazing cust. service that (along with quality of this garmet -- best peiece of clothing I have ever owned) has led me to buy lots of Bberry over the years..... just back from a 50th bday party -- without my trench... someone, it seems, deemed it wonderful like me... and unless miracle in coming days, it's forever gone --- and i'll be heading to the Bberry store once again.

thanks for the intel everyone -- I just went to the website to look for exact style .. and don't see... hmmmmm.... maybe will opt for new style - but if can't find my tried & true style, i WILL also to go a consignment store to get same of what have sooooo appreciated. :)
