London Fashion Week SS08 Wrapup II

As HG pointed out, London fashion week is always fun to look at, but a great pain for those of us who want to try and imitate the look. Or maybe that is just me...But anyway, lets look.

Matthew Williamson
Matthew's show is one that I always love to check out every season, because one can be sure that it is going to look fun and colorful. This season is no different. The clothes are colorful, fun, chic with a hint of tribal vibe (aztec prints?).

I love how he mixes the prints/colors here in these outfits and it still looks so perfectly put together and chic. I'd never be able to do that no matter how much I study unless I buy the whole outfit off the mannequin.
I especially love this outfit on the left. The simple pairing of plain top with printed shorts, and just a hint of mix 'n matching with the scarf is so me. Note the very colorful sneakers on this runway paired with everything, even dresses, which one wouldn't usually think to pair them with. Looks sooo comfy! Though I wonder if one can pull if off if one doesn't have legs as skinny and long as these models.
Then he has some tie-dyed outfits, which kind of reminds me of Prada and Miu Miu this season. But I do so like black, white and pink. And I absolutely adore pairing these flowy printed tops with structured blazers (right). Again, so me. Blazer is my uniform.
I am STILL looking for the perfect shift dress this season. You'd think with all these lovely creations sprinkling the runways the last few seasons I'd find one by now. But no, they just keep coming on the runway tempting me..... esp like the black dress with the printed trimmings.
Lastly there were these beautiful, flowy, colorful dresses. The printed one here on the right is soo Matthew Williamson!

Erdem
One of the brands I've been keeping a lookout for ever since I saw some of their collection in the Harvey Nichols catalog. This collection is the epitome of British casual chic cool for me.
I love the shape of these dresses, which are so different. One is structured and the other one is all flowy and free. And the stripey print adds structure to one and gives the other a illusion effect. So cool.
Casual cool outfits.
Its so cool how he put bold white stripes over the delicate floral pattern of the silk dress. It makes for a very sharp contrast.
Sharp design to match the bold colors on top of the silver grey. Gives it a slightly futuristic edge.
And these last four are my absolutely favourites. They are just so chic, classy and feminine.
Just LOVE these dresses in their soft, feminine effortlessly cool way.

Ps. Remind me to get bold colored footwear next season!

A bit off the subject, but im 16 and looking for a work experience placement in 2008 for about 2 weeks in the fashion industry, and i have no ideas which companies would be willing to offer me a place. I've thought about magazines like Vogue and Elle but i dont think they'd take someone so young who has no previous experience. Anybody got any ideas?

I really like the model who wears the white outfit with those yellow stripes on it and the blue sneakers (4th picture). She looks ALIVE; her face doesn't have the static skeleton like expression. That's true beauty!

The 2nd row dress on the right is an exact copy of an ethiopian traditional dress.. I have the exact same thing except longer. Im pretty sure that is where the influence came from. weird didnt expect to see that!

what a copy cat? that's not Matthew williams design. that's ethiopian traditional dress. I am talking about the white outfit with yellow stripes.

thats not original...research should be done before doing stuff like that...i've seen ethiopian dresses that look JUST LIKE that except a little longer all over the place...talking about the white one with the yellow stripes, also...the other outfits are cute, but that one just stands out to me...cuz i've seen it elsewhere...

Just to emphasize the comments before me...the white dress with yellow strip is an exact copy of Ethiopian/Eritrean traditional dress. Almost all traditional dresses are hand-made with pure cotton. Some of them are long to the toe and some are short as shown here. The colors, the width and designs of the stripe are vast and hand made as well.happen to know that..I am Ethiopian.. :)..anyway my favorite are the green ones. very beautiful...

This guy is stealing traditional Ethiopian designs. It's not "inspired by", it's copying. Somebody call the WTO! I'm sure they'd make a big fuss if there were unauthorized Matthew Williams copies made in China being sold, so let's level this playing field. Williams needs to pay royalties!

The money should then go to support original dress makers in Ethiopia and Eritrea in any feasible way. E.g. to establish an organization that lobbies for their intellectual property rights.

YES! royalties must be paid as its an exact COPY of traditional Ethiopian dress. Nothing origianal about it. He shouldn't take advantage of designers without a voice. The dress makers in Ethiopia design such dresses in variety designs and colors and they should get the credit and the rolyalty. We need to be their voice and stop this non sense. If one is going to COPY their deisgn they should pay royalies as they would with any other designers.

It is definitely an Ethiopian dress. But lets not assume he has stole anything. Perhaps he loves Ethiopian style and wishes to bring it to the attention of the west. Rather than calling for his head, why not try to be positive. And for those of you calling for royalties, please be reasonable. Who are they going to pay royalties to? Do you think a country owns the rights to its style? Do you think people all over the world should pay America to wear jeans? That's not how it works. What if it was an Ethiopian designer who produced this dress? Whats the difference in the end? If people were positive instead of prone to just complain, they would see this as an opportunity to produce something and market it and then protect that specific design from theft.

In the Ethiopian language, Amharic, this kind of "work" is called LEBINET
translated - thievery. Period.

Mr. Williams, you do not seem to be aware that the road and distance between London and Addis Abeba or any two points on the planet are "Google" and one click respectively.

This is pure plagiarism!! I am sure this Williamson has mastered it at University (if he ever been to one, which I guess he did). Then again, thiefing from a poor country is not new to the British.

This is just unbelievable u call Matthew Williams a fashion designer i call him a theif he doesn't have any creativity what so ever. That shrot dress with yellow stip is exactly the same as the one i have, which i bought from my country, ethiopia. only the strip is green. I cant believe they let him do this. Plz ppl tell me where to complain about this. i will take it to the top. I am sooo furious. Is it ethical/legal/fair to copy a country's traditional dress and claim as if it’s your OWN creation? Or is this going to be the next patent right fight Ethiopia is going to go through after Starbucks coffee? Being inspired is one thing, but shamelessly copying something is outright theft!!!!! shame on him!!!

If you're going to demand royalties for tradional dress, could you be so kind as to pay the Scottish for all the uses of Tartan you've made over the years?

Or stop being so silly and invest in co-operative seedcorn businesses, moderated by international charities to monitor the workers rights in the Fairtrade agreements, so that they can take advantage of the interest in Ethiopian National dress and make as much money out of it as the Scottish have.

I agree with most of the comments, he did steal because no real credit has been given to anyone.
I've not heard of him paying back anything to Ethiopian/Eritrean people.
That was a complete and total rip off!
I'm Ethiopian and I have a lot of traditional clothing and I have a something almost exactly the same as that!!!
Seems someone is lacking in some real creativity

This designer has without a doubt brazenly stolen his idea from Ethiopia and if he has a conscience should ensure that this country receives a large portion of his considerable designer fee - it is outrageous. This design is the traditional dress for Ethiopian women - what was he thinking??

PEOPLE!!!! We should be happy that our traditional cloth made it to Fashion Week. I am an up and coming Ethiopian Fashion Designer so by adding "Ethiopian Dress" in "HIS COLLECTION" and show casing it to the world he is making it possible for me other "STRUGGLING" Ethiopian designers to be noticed. So let's rise above it and welcome the opportunity.

Hey ppl,,what He did is a very big mistake ! That dress is Ethiopia's tradtional dress ,they own it ! He should hv asked for a permisson 'if they want him to introduce their clothing in fashion weeks, that can let evrybdy know about it and can get acess to their beautiful dressing 'then we call that legal . He never did that and we call his way STEALING so he diserves punishment ! sorry M but u r a thief !!!!

I love the look of the Aztec print panties with solid yellow blouse. I can just imagine a certain aging male model who's blog I follow walking down the street in that outfit. Seriously, it is a beautiful look and strikingly noticeable.
