American Apparel Reglan Pullover

For some odd reasons, no one seems to understand that my definition of 'effortless' is genuinely effortless and possibly lazy. I've decided that if I was going for the effortless look, I might as well actually put in little time, as opposed to spending lots of time to look effortless.

It's weird because my high school friends, who know me well but don't go to the same universtiy, can't imagine me going to lectures in a boring tee, jeans and sneakers. But to myself and to people who I see at school, (and even my mum who visited me for only five days last term,) I probably look like I live in these two American Apparel shirts. Ever since I bought them last fall, I just can't stop wearing them! All I ever do now is rotate between the two.

OK, so admittedly, I first bought the grey shirt because I was looking for a boring and easy-to-wear shirt for school, and after seeing Mary Kate in them and realising that the shirts were actually affordable, I thought that I simply must get them. This 'look' was exactly what I was looking for, something loose and comfortable, and something that would suit bootcut and straight-leg jeans. The poor friend who I dragged into the store (and she doesn't like American Apparel because the clothes are just boring,) was not amused when I made her sit through my agonising over what colours and sizes to get. And after wearing the grey one for a few times, I was so in love with it that I went to get another one in Cranberry (colour), which looks great with pale skin.

Another thing I love about it is that the sleeves hang a lot below the armpit -kind of like batwing tops, so I can wear it for many times before they need to be washed, (whereas with normal tops, I have to wash them probably after wearing them two times.) A warning though: I don't know if it's because I wear the grey top more or they're just not as good quality, but the grey, tri-blend top has already got little fuzzy bits on it, and it's not like I've washed it often. Oddly enough, the cranberry one is still nice and soft. I know I shouldn't, but I'm so tempted to get another one! Maybe one in a lighter colour, like this mauve one. So tempting...

Who else here only lives in a few shirts? Or do you prefer to really doll up everyday (like Marissa and Summer did in The OC)? I suspect most people are probably somewhere in between right?

i am downright lazy, as i am NOT a morning person...especially when the school stress builds.
i go along the same lines of "effortless/slouchy-but-not-sloppy" look, as well!

oh gosh. i bought the tri blend one because i saw MK wearing it and i wanted something that was effortlessly comfortable and chic too (compared to fleece pullovers). i have 3 and i want every color. i'm addicted to AA. i have the deep V summer t shirt and i wear them even during fall. i just layer with coats and scarves. haha

Man, I wish we had half of the great stores in New Zealand that you have over there.

I'm more of a dolled-up person for uni. I wear make-up every day, too. It's just the kind of person I am. I'm usually in dresses or pretty skirts. Very occasionally, like maybe once in two months, I go casual: a black skirt/jeans, pink camisole, and grey lightweight hoodie over the top, finished with ankle socks and my beloved lime-green Lacoste sneakers.

as soon as my next pay comes in, (and someone flies over to america for me) i will be buying up on the AA. i wanted to give the leotard a go, as they have a few cute styles (minus the g-string one).

i'm a denim or dress girl at uni. but i dress it up by wearing a silk scarf.

i wear jeans and a blouse, and i usually carry a cardigan/pashmina wrap..i study in melbourne and the weather's crazy anyway, so it's best to always be prepared!..totally understand the whole "lazy in the morning" thing..some mornings i just feel like going to class in my pjs!..but thank god i haven't reached that level of laziness! hehe..

I don't think they look bad, it really depends on what you wear them with. With the right jewelery and shoes and a mild smokey-eye make-up you can do badass-chic with these, which I love. AA stuff seems great for laering too. I'm so inspired to wear basic items since I started reading Rumi's blog (www.fashiontoast.com). I did a huge AA haul myself, my stuff will arrive when my aunt flies over here :)

While I don't go for the whole slouchy shirt look I do hear you on the uniform. I practially live in my jeans, converse, tank top and cardigan combo.

i think that, it really is cute and effortless. however, my school is not a "i just rolled out of bed school." we're the preppy, dressed to impress. so i'm more of a jeans and polo type when it comes to my "effortless"

I've never worn any American Apparel clothes, but we don't have that store near here. Hmmmmm...will have to try to find one nearby though! I love effortless!!!

weird! i've never met anyone who didn't like AA because it was too plain. it's usually about the hipster stigma and/or the porno ads. but i guess not everyone goes for traditional wardrobe basics. eh? and boyyy, you are tempting me with that top.

I'm kind of polarized when it comes to my everyday look. I wear makeup every day, but usually slouch off to classes in my Cal sweatshirt and jeans. It's a widely accepted uniform here; it looks unusual when someone is dressed up.

I'm glad this post was done because I've had a question about this AA style for a while:
I don't live near an American Apparel and will have to purchase online, but I've heard complaints about the fit, specifically that the top is quite short. Normally I wear a small in everything (bust is about 33, waist is about 25) but should I go up to a medium to counteract the crop and emphasize the easy baggy look or will I just end up looking lost in it?
The advice of the fashionistas of this site would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Anon 3:06am -The top is pretty short. Personally I was going for that baggy look like MK's, so I got an M. Just to give you an idea, my height is the same as MK's.

I believe in effortless look that is truly effortless. I usually have a few comfy tops and of course my jeans. I usually use accessories to pop my outfits.

Hmm...I definitely don't rotate just a few shirts, since I get bored super easily plus I feel guilty leaving the scads of shirts just lying in my drawer without wearing them. But I think the main reason is that each day I sort of dress in reaction to what I wore the day before, so it's really unlikely to have the same look 2 days in a row. Not on purpose, that's just how my jumpy mind works :)
I am a little fed up with AA (living in L.A., having 2 stores within walking distance, and seeing so many people dressed head-to-toe in it). But I did get some free AA swag when they sponsored one of my bf's band's shows, and let me tell you--the tri-blend v-neck tee is my FAVORITE shirt of all time. Yah, it's gotten a bit pill-y, but it's so soft and swishy and soooo flattering (eliminates all threat of the waistlessness that comes with most cotton tees). I've since ordered more (my friend has a wholesale account through her job! yippee, $6 shirts!)

If you are tired of the generic look of AA, Mushynyc.com has some awesome vintage sweatshirts for sale. Some of them are really delish and the best part is that they don't smell like a thrift store!
