Harrods Girl shops San Francisco I: my first visit to Anthropologie

Barneys Girl and I have always loved the clothes and the whole feel of Anthropologie. All the clothes look so lady-like, and they always have a trendy twist. But I must admit, even though I have in the past recommended Anthropologie clothes to you in my posts, I haven't actually been into an Anthropologie shop -that is until today.

First impresson? The clothes were very lady-like -and slightly old fashioned, and not in the chic way. Then I walked down to the basement level (of the San Francisco store,) and felt a sort-of-bohemian vibe. But at the same time, there was also this feel of desperate attempt to be Kate Spade sort of elegant.

Obviously, I was disappointed by Anthropologie. I think the shop lacks a focus theme thus has a confusing atmosphere. The clothes were just as expensive as I had expected, except I had expected better quality clothes.

But I'm not an overly picky shopper. In my desperate attempt to buy something (so I would remember I have been into Anthropologie,) I managed to find this top in the sale section.

Not bad for $29.95 huh? But anyhow, I don't think I will go back to Anthropologie for a long time.

I, too, had admired this shop from afar for quite some time, and was disappointed by my first and only visit. I agree that the quality of the clothes was not in proportion to the price--I have seen higher quality garments at low-end "teen" shops. I also agree that the atmosphere was perplexing. The dressing area, while comfortable, was too well-observed by pushy sales girls saying everything looked cute. The store I visited was divided down the middle between housewares/antiques and clothing. Both areas were very narrow and the clothing was not displayed attractively. After months of anticipation, I stayed only a few minutes. 8(

I've always found the store to be somewhat overrated, but it can be a good resource if you live near one--there are two within 20 mintues of me. I don't shop there for regular items, since you can get better stuff elsewhere, but it's almost always worth checking out their sale rack. And if you need a really unique accent piece or especially a nice hostess/girly gift, it's generally fail-safe. I do find their website to be almost better than the stores, though--I love that they make suggestions for the whole outfit! Like a silet, non-pushy personal shopper!

I feel completely the opposite of the opinions posted here. I shop Anthropologie regularly, attracted by their one-of-a-kind quirky clothing. I do agree with the comments about the website -- one of the best. Easy to navigate and great outfit suggestions so elegantly implemented.

Many of the clothes I bought there over time I am still wearing even years later and they never fail to get a compliment (especially a long embroidered sweater coat -- a favorite!).

Quality of clothing does vary but I find that most of the time I am impressed by what I find there. There's not a better deal on the market then the Long Victoria Duster I bought there recently. Its reasonable price made me skeptical but the minute I put it on I was in love. Great detailing, heavy luxurious feel and beautiful cut.

Its not cookie cutter in the least, its not for everyone, but if you're looking for a fanciful, off-beat addition to your closet I think this is a great place to look.

I agree with Kate and Kathy about anthropologie.com--I'm certainly addicted to it. Maybe that's why I was disappointed by the actual store--I was expecting so much more.

Anthropologie holds a special place in my heart for making the kind of clothes that make me feel like I just bought vintage. Something about those skirts is so 1960s or something. The San Francisco store does lack a certain je ne se quois, but it still hits my list of places to stop at on Market St. I also love their dainty lingerie and camisoles - very lady like.

I really loved the little things Anthropologie sold, like the address books, girly books and some jewelry. And yes, anthropologie.com is ever so lovely -which is why I was disappointed by its store. The store just lacked a central theme, and the salespeople weren't particularly helpful that day.

Sounds like my teenage experience of Rampage. The site looked so decent, and u walk into the real shop and is sorely disappointed. I myself haven't been into the Anthropologie store (i can never bring myself to walk further then UO on the mag mile, does anyone know how far much further it is?), i guess i'm in for another disappointment.

I'm pretty sure that anthropologie is only 3-4 blocks north of the UO off the mag mile.

and actually, the only store I've ever been to is the one in San Francisco, and I totally know what you're talking about. It just seemed like too much, and not a good shopping experience.

The two stores I have been to in Los Angeles are gorgeous (Beverly and The Grove) - very open, airy and organized. I like how the colors and type (day, evening, glam, casual) are all grouped together throughout.

One of my favorite things about these stores is the decor -- big antique tables and cabinets with little drawers full of surprises. You have to scrounge for treasures, cute little scarves, camies, bracelets; kinda like a really cool attic in some victorian mansion.

Tedious things like returns have been handled with good cheer even when they'd have to go the extra mile and call headquarters about some obscure item without a 'code' that doesn't show up in the catalog.

Have to say -- I'm a fan. But I may skip a trip to the SF store if its as bad as it sounds.

the high prices aside... from a man's perspective, the cloths are incredibly sexy on a woman. i shop there all the time for my wife.

Put me on the list who adore Anthropologie. On the contrary, I have never used the website and shop exclusively at about 4 different store locations (all in Texas). I'm surprised so many find the quality of clothing low. In my experience it has been impeccable. Everything I buy there feels like it was tailored to my body. Anthropologie to me is everything good about vintage- the originality, the class, the spirit of a bygone time- without having to dig through 16 musty thrift store racks only to find something 8 sizes too big. And it never looks like I'm wearing a costume! Echoing the last posters comment, my husband spent half a paycheck on a fantastic 60s style dress from Anthropologie for my birthday two years ago...and I'm still wearing it regularly today.
