What do you think of ASOS?

A few weeks ago, I had a party to go to and no new dress to wear. My friend told me to check out asos.com, which if you don't know, is a site famous for selling clothes that are 'in the style of x celebrity' and also clothes from a few UK high street brands (like Oasis, French Connection and Mina).
So after spending some time on it, I didn't know what to think about it. Because
a) ASOS has no physical store and you never know how the clothing item is like in real life until you've actually felt it.
b) The prices are high-street prices, meaning very affordable. This again, makes me very suspicious of how the clothes would look and fit.
c) I've heard mix reviews from friends. A few of my friends said the clothes were decent, and one wasn't a fan of the quality.
d) If I wanted to return the clothes, I would have to mail them back. Talk about inconvenient and the extra cost involved!

These two black dresses are classy and stylish. The quality looks decent too. I especially like the sequinned one.

The red dress is quite cute, and the silver, sequinned dress is perfect for this party season!
Now these are examples of what I think are poor quality and design. The black dress's material looks cheap and the gems a bit too plastic-y. OK, I know the dress doesn't actaully cost a lot (38 pounds), but I have no desire to wear that material. As for the cream-coloured sequined dress, the design is just not very flattering.
This is the dress that has got me seriously thinking to give ASOS a go. I really like this dress. It's stylish, pretty and very youthful.
And on a closer look, even the beads and sequins look ok in quality. So should I dive in and get this dress?
Another dress I'm liking is this waistcoat dress. It's cute and cool. It's made of all polyester though, so I'm not sure how it'll look in real life.
So I need your opinion: If you've ever bought anything (or seen your friend's purchases) from ASOS, let me know what you think of them! Oh, and what do you think of the last two dresses?

I would get that dress you really like. If it were me I would get it the moment I laid eyes on it.

If it doesn't fit it or you end up not liking it its only a seven dollar cost. But if you do like it you have a hot new dress! Which one means more to you?

Hope I helped!

the "cream coloured one" is supposed to be a replica of a vintage balenciaga that both sienna miller and katie holmes wore
of course if you knew anything about fashion, you would know this ....

I've ordered a few things from ASOS and found their quality to be quite good. It's probably on par with the better made items from Topshop and Warehouse. The house brand of shoes are a bit flimsy, but they make great going out shoes. If you approach them [the shoes] with the wear 'em and trash 'em attitude then you won't be disappointed.

lis, asos how been around for years so i dont think they'd be selling fake french connection, as they already clearly state they sell replica of designer things...
anyways, my boyfriend and his brother ordered some stuff years ago and they said they didn'T like the quality, and that they looked nowhere near as good as the pictures. and the items they ordered were mainly knit caps and winter accessories..

So far its seems okay to me, I like the fact that you can switch up price conversions...not like TopShop. I think that you also have to understand that most people are on a budget, and do shopping for party dresses or going out clothes on a whim...most of the stuff I buy, I only wear once...in fact I dont think I've ever worn anything to a party or going out twice...so I dont want to spend a grip for somthing that will only get one wear...BUT, I also don't want my stuff lookin' like Forever 21 either.

I haven't ordered anything from Asos yet, but, like you I've been wondering about the quality.
I think you'll have to try to order once and see for yourself. Some people that've commented here have said it's not so good quality and others say it is, so I think it's just different between products.
As for your picks in the post, I absolutely love the cream coloured one!

The cream coloured dress with the sequins looks like a knock-off of the Balenciaga dress Sienna Miller got photographed wearing earlier this year.

its crap quality in my opinion so i dont think the sequin and beaded one is a good option since the beads would probably fall off in like days.

i suggest you to order something without all the beading, probably the first black one would be the best option if you wanted to order somethign

I totally agree with you! I've always wanted to buy something from ASOS but I keep mmmmmring and ahhhring because of all the points you listed before. Some of the clothes look really good but I've always wondered why they are so cheap and I've also thought about time, delivery and returns. I'll probably brave it out someday but for now I think I'll just stick to my usually, topshop, h&m, zara, new look and the whole highstreet lot. Last two dresses - all I can say is TOTAL NO-NO! they are clearly poor material and design; you'll probably wear the thing for a few minutes before it falls apart.

I've bought from ASOS before but I find the quality not what I expect. I recently found a great new site www.jemboutique.com It's got a wide range of products and prices, the quality of excellent, deliveries are very quick and they offer free returns. ASOS are a huge success story but I prefer better quality and customer service.

and you should look out for their regular 75% off sales, theres a lot of amazing deals

and yeah you have to spend to send them back

I bought several things from ASOS and almost had to return them all because of the sizing problems, their clothes and shoes (I mean ASOS products, not the exclusive brands) are hardly ever true to size, so I would recommend to always size up. The quality is not excellent but the prices are good. I was pleased with the fast shipping and professional customer service (they actually answer your emails). Don't worry, you'll get what you ordered. Also: it is quite easy to find disocunt codes on the web.

Interesting thoughts. I personally have never ordered clothes online, I prefer to go and try something on in a store. 1/2 the time something off the rack will only look good on certain body types, so I assume it's even more of a hit and miss way of shopping from ASOS.

Is it just me (i.e. am i getting really old), or are styles these days completely tacky??? Most often, a dress with a really cool cut will just be completely ruined with a retarded array of cheap-looking sparkly crap. What's up with that???

i got my ball dress for £15 on this site in the sale. decent quality for the price and I probably looked the best out of all my companions, for the least money :P
also, if it says French Connection, it's French Connection. This isn't some dodgy site, it's like Topshop online and they happen to carry other high street fashion retailers in addition to their own, probably to encourage people to shop there.

I recently bought two dresses from ASOS which looked really good in the photos (and I wasn't the only one who thought that) only to find that the fit was rather bizarre, and the quality very poor. Essentially, the dresses looked as cheap as they cost, which wasn't a good thing. If you're buying something which isn't an in-house brand, there's a higher chance that the quality will be pretty decent although I, for one, will not be willing to purchase anything else from ASOS. Once bitten, twice shy!

BTW, I'm in the UK and returns most definitely aren't free. You have to pay the postage for the return parcel.

Good luck with your purchase!

The quality is absolutely dire. You'd get better quality in Ethel Austins! And I agree the cut of the garments is weird, nothing fits in the right place. I know it's cheap but it's not worth the money they charge, and to have to pay for returns yourself is just a rip off.

I would suspect that the models are wearing a more expensive version of the clothing than what is sold to you and I!

Don't waste your time or money!

I have first hand experience of ASOS and I don't recommend them at all. I ordered a dress two weeks ago and it is still not here - the clothing maybe nice if you get to see it at all. I haven't had a great experience with their customer service department either - they say you should do this, and you should do that!! but they are doing nothing to help me!! spend more and buy from netaporter!! that's my advice!!

I think if you are afraid of getting horrible quality then the better bet is to go to EBAY for BCBG and other reputable names or bloomingdales when they have sales and clearance. Nordstrom also has a great section called BP, which is for juniors but most of us can still fit their clothing. I don't see how ASOS is any different than forever 21, G&G, the $10 store etc. Better safe then sorry. I say stick with names who already have steady reputations. If you have to google ASOS reviews, then you know they don't yet have a reliable reputation.

From the size and material comments I'm reading above, I'm thining that might have been a blessing in disguise.

I a variety of things from Asos last year that looked so cute online but not in person. The styles were similar to shirts I already owned and looked cute on my body type. I purchased 3 shirts that were very cheap quality, I have shopped at Forever21 and it still beats Asos quality on the items they sent me. One shirt was so stiff and hard and very thin material that you could see right through that didnt appear so in the photos online. I still look at the clothing but I have not ordered anything since then, I wish they allowed people to put reviews under each item.

I have had a pretty good experience with ASOS as a first-time buyer. I bought some leather gold gladiators. They seem to be pretty good quality (not notably comfortable), and look just like I expected them to be from the picture. I also bought a skirt out of the clearance section. It was also of good quality, and fit and wore just as I expected it to. Shipping was not exactly prompt (11 days), but it was cheap ($6 to the West Coast). I would give them an 8/10

Have been shopping with ASOS since they first started in 2000. Back then, the quality was excellent, customer service was excellent - I couldn't fault them. It was great to go out to an event knowing that you wouldn't see anyone in the same dress lol.

Over the last four years I've noticed a big decline in their level of customer service, the selection of clothes on their website etc. The downside to their popularity is you're in danger of going out for a night on the tiles and seeing someone else in the same dress! ;-)

Even though they sell other brands on their website, sometimes I find the item is being sold for less on that brand's website.

ASOS dresses often look stunning on the website, but sometimes the quality looks cheap. They do free returns so, if you don't like it you can simply send it back. Last week I ordered two dresses for an event (couldn't decide on the colour so I ordered one of each with the intention of sending back the one I didn't like). They didn't arrive in time due to the poor weather - so I went out shopping to see what I could find. I bought two dresses that looked way better, looked expensive and were way cheaper than the cheap looking ASOS dresses that arrived 6 days later. The next day they were collected and returned to ASOS.

ASOS footwear - haven't bought many pairs but found boots to be way too big for their size.

I'd say that with ASOS - it's hit and miss. I still use them often but these days my purchases consist of accessories, beauty items and clothing from other brands.

I found it more cost effective to take advantage of their Premier account membership, it went down to £14.95 for the year - for that price you get unlimited next day, standard & nominated day delivery plus if I want to return the item someone comes to my door to collect and return it for free. There's also no minimum order amount so it's no skin off my nose to order an item that costs less that £5 and get it delivered the next day.

As for ordering - if you see something you like on ASOS, buy it straight away or put it in your basket to give yourself time to make up your mind - especially if other sizes seem to be selling out quickly! They keep it in your basket for two hours but once those two hours are up your item can end up being sold to someone else. If your size is out of stock, refresh the page every now again, just in case somebody else's 2 hour reserve time expires - works for me ;-)

Alex

I just bought a lace dress from there to wear to my rehearsal dinner for my wedding. This site (as any other rooted in another country) looked sketchy at first, but after reading reviews I decided to go for it anyway. This dress is beautiful, great quality, had fast shipping (even right before a holiday weekend) and had a great price. I highly recommend this site. (word of advice, I am normally a size 13-15 in the US and I bought a 14, and it runs about a size large)

Obviously with online sites you have to be really careful to read the description and make sure the material is what you think it is! I find ASOS pretty decent actually, and it definitely helps to watch the runway videos because then you can see how the material moves and get a better sense of the feel of it too~

They always deliver super fast too! Usually within a week, and I'm in Australia xD

I heard about this site from my colleagues,
I was skeptical to shop online. Since the price is affordable,
Thought I would just order once to try it out.
I bought 5 things. ( I know, a bit too many for a try)
2 designer shoes turned out to be nice.
1 house brand dress fitted properly. 1 clunch bag just looked like pic. And another pair of house branded shoes
Was ok. Overall, I was happy with it. Now I have been ordering the 3rd time in a month. Looking fwd to receive the items. I think it's more save to get those brands you know. I found good discounts from Ted Baker, Guess,ALDO etc.

I just bought a parka from ASOS, it looks fabulous on those photos!
BUT!
the truth is , it's too big to me, even the smallest size. I wear A&F XS/S/2 and I chose size 2 form ASOS. It's so biiiig that I think it fits for double me...
The quality is not bad, but not that good, too. At least does not worth the cost.
The quality is less than AmericanEagle, but the price is about A&F without any discount.
I returned it right after I tried it on.
my roommate told me that the quality is a little poor, at least not as good as the photo and the price. I think what she said is reasonable.
But it's just me.
Hope I helped.
BTW, the cream dress is really beautiful. I think you can try if returning is free.
