Beach Party Wear

This weekend I went to a beach party that goes from day to night and onwards into the next morning. Personally, I've never been to a huge beach bash before (I can't even remember the last time I stepped foot on a beach), so I was actually really excited to go. I imagined it to be similar to the beach party scene in Princess Diaries, minus the public humiliation bit of course. As the date approached, I was increasingly thinking about one question- what does one wear to a beach party? Beach wear? But its a party.....supposedly like a nightclub moved to a beach.....how does one recouncil the two?
Some thoughts. As I didn't plan on getting myself wet or anything, the first thing that popped to mind was a pretty summer dress in bright colors like these two from Free People shown here. Just imagine what a pretty beach pic these dresses would make! And the thin material and relatively cheap price is perfect for the beach, as you wouldn't have to constantly think about ruining it.
Ultimately though I ended up wearing cropped jeans as the practical side of me pops up, with the fear that skirts may be blown by the wind and it could get messy. You always want to wear pants when things get messy. Of course, shorts work too, but I was also scared of mosquitos too since it was night- I know I think too much! (Both from Forever 21)

Topwise, I suggest a pretty floral top that would also make a pretty picture (left: UO, right: Forver 21).
And if you're worried about a tan line (as I'd be if I'd went in the afternoon), tubes are a great option like these two from Forever 21 (left) and UO(right). I especially love the white tube, because its so simple but elegant and fun.
Then came shoes. These are the times when sandals/flip flops become your best friend, as heels will sink in and are impractical and sneakers are too hot. Remember to get super cheap ones, as you wouldn't want to ruin your fancy pair on the rough sandy shores of a beach (above from UO). I bought a pair of flip flops for less than $3 especially for the occasion!
Then came a bag to put all your stuff in. At that moment, I wished I had my white Le Sportsac huge tote with me. But alas it is in Chicago. But really, just stuff everything (mat, sunscreen, food, water, shades, umbrella etc) into a big beach bag like the one above from UO. And just in case you want to head over to the bar for a while and don't want to bring everything with you, consider bringining a small clutch like this one also from UO to put your valuables in. Leaving valuables anywhere is not a good idea. Plus, it'll look more chic then holding your wallet around.

And lastly, don't forget to bring a cardigan. It CAN get cold at night on a beach- think OC beach parties with everyone putting on college sweat shirts and cardis. And that is my whole thought process prepping for this beach party. I know, I think too much. LOL. Hope everyone has a fun weekend as well!

it gets VERYYY cold at night at the beach, aka i-need-a-sweatshirt-NOW type cold. but since it seems you're going to a big party with lots of people, i dunno maybe lots of people = body heat = warm? haha i'd still suggest keeping something like a cute hoodie or thick cardigan with you.

as for bottoms, i really don't suggest anything denim. in the day it gets super hot and denim just ends up clinging to you. really uncomfortable. shorts are a much better alternative.

shoes, if this party takes place on actual sand, i'd say go for a pair of simple, cheap flipflops. everybody really ends up barefoot though cuz the sand makes it so hard to walk with even flipflops. but if the partyfloor isn't sand, then hey, go for whatever makes you feel pretty =)

btw there are no mosquitos at the beach lol.

All of the above I agree with, from sundresses to tote bags. The only thing I have to add is that all the tops and dresses featured have the same empire waist. While its been "in" in mainstream clothing manufacturing, its been out of style in the big leagues for a while. Also, empire waists make well endowed or slightly larger girls look pregnant.

Trust me, the last thing you want at your beach party is a rumor about you having a baby circling around all your friends!

A well fitted, but equally bright tanktop, or, as BG said, a nice tubetop can be slimming in the right shade, and just as summery!

I don't really like the rap around flip flops, it would leave a bad tan line, lol. I love the clothes, they are top of the line beach must have!! CUTE

I love the two dresses! But I think the fear of wind is a good one. I second the sweatshirt as it does get pretty cold at night. Have fun.

Do you know what they wear to the beach in Paris? You should read that Paris shopping book by Susan Tabak, Chic In Paris http://susantabak.com/book.html

I read your blog about the beach and clothes and all I can think about now is my new bathing suit. One piece, not trendy. But sooooo pretty.

Depending on the type of beach party there is one additional new beach accessories you should pack that is becoming very popular for the beach that is extremely conducive for tanning: the SquidFace pillow. This is a patented , multi-use invention for lying truly facedown comfortably and breathe without turning your head to the side plus many varied uses. All the benefits are on the website. Wow! Something extremely fashionable. For sure, girls on photos can't express the real beauty of this things, that's what I don't like in this 'model' photos. These models always have the same expression on their faces, by the way, I've posted their faces on a funny photocollage service, http://feelgs.com , the result is expected, but funny :)

I love the footwear you pictured. Very chic. When I was in Morocco I never once wore anything other then a practical sandel on my feet.

I wouldn't suggest anyone wear jeans or even capri jeans to a beach. Sand and denim do not mix well. A light summer dress would be the best. If you are worried about wind blowing it up, why not wear a bikini bottom?

Flip flops are a no brainer, and if you are really on the beach, you'll be barefoot anyway. If not you'll be pretty uncomfortable.

where are you guys from that the beach is cold at night in SUMMER? in australia, at least in summertime, it is HOT all day/all night without fail. unless you own a private beach or you go somewhere secluded parties aren't allowed on the beach (at least in my city!) however, i agree with someone above: don't wear denim unless they are short-shorts! cute little flouncy tops/skirts/dresses are the way to go. i wouldn't worry so much about shoes.. just make sure you have a pretty pedicure! :)

Fashion is dead.
Style is forever.
Get your own style and leave the fashion for the clones. The cult of following high street fashion is clones like. I feel sorry for you. Think of the under paid that worked to make your off the peg cheap dress. You are aiding the injustice. Buy Fairtrade and from local up and coming designers.

End/....

I had also bother over what to wear to such events. But then somehow I did not care. The main thing is to be comfortable to dance and have fun. I love beach parties, because it is a great way to spend a good time, to lie on a lounger http://www.beachgiraffe.com/best-beach-chairs-reviews/ and to talk about life, meet new people.
