The DvF Wrap Dress

Everyone knows about the Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress. Everyone who loves fashion anyway. It is the legendary dress that is perfect for all occasions, from work to shopping to dinner to a night out. I have always coveted one, but thought that they were a bit too old for my age and out of my price range. Besides, what makes it so different from say, wrap dresses one finds at Top Shop, that is at least half the price? Well, the other day passing by the DvF store, I finally experienced the magic of the DvF wrap dress. The fit is truly amazing and staring at oneself in the store mirror, one just feels wonderful. Very chic, put-together, smart yet feminine and sexy. I don't know what I was thinking when I thought it old. Maybe it is a taste acquired when you step into the twenties and above age bracket....

Anyway, previously I've tried on a few wrap dresses before at Top Shop hoping to find something similar, but alas, because I have a small chest, they never fitted well. The V was always too loose and so it hung in a most unattractive manner- but not with the DvF dress, it fits perfectly. I haven't figured out why- the cutting? the jersey material?- but Diane is definitely doing something right and deserves to be the queen of the wrap dress!

I have a cute brown patterned wrap dress I can't wait to wear this fall; it makes me look so curvy and thin even though I have almost no curves to speak of. I love it!

i'm only fifteen and love them! i don't have any but i have tried them on. if i had the money, i'd buy a ton! i especially like the summer ones that are sleeveless and a shorter length...they seem more age appropriate.

Going out to an Italian Restaurant on my 1st ever date, actually EATING (I read in Just17 when I was 14, just before said date, that "boys really like it when a girl eats heartily") and not giving oneself indigestion through overly tight garments is what the wraparound dress was MADE for! Long live the wraparound! I love it!

Nordstrom rack has several on sale in the $50.00 range I tried on an 8 but was suprised it was a little too snug. However the cut is the most flattering to the bust possible!!

i was going to say that i doubted very much that a DVF wrap dress would work on me because i'm small-chested, but then you went and addressed that, so maybe i'm out of excuses. lol

You know...a fashionista's best friend is their seamstress. I bet if you did buy a non-DvF wrap dress (one that clings to your body, like it was meant to be) your seamstress could take it in at the top and make it a real dream come true. My point is, don't let size stop you from looking fabulous!

ooh wrap dresses.. i have a small chest area, and i'm petite, but wrap dresses transform me into this curve-a-licious nymph! the wrapdresses that my mom bought from the local street bazaar for like 7 dollars i must add... i think as long as the fabric and the pattern are youthful, wrapdresses welcome to hug bodies of any age..

I’m really digging that dress there! I’ve been around town looking for one very similar to that and for some Prada ladies shoes. I haven’t’ had to much luck lately with in store fashions. They tend to look cheap and bland. That’s not what I want to be wearing along with my luxury handbags so I don’t buy much from shopping centers.

I’ve been buying much more online lately. Things like Jimmy Choo and Miu Miu are much easier to find and more affordable too! Do you guys shop mainly online? I’ve just started recently but it’s been much more fun that driving around town all day. Can anyone recommend a great shop for high end fashions?

the best thing you can do is just ignore it. if you dont, people will notice and then probably wonder why you did it in the first place. it is times like these that i just make crafts and focus on pom poms or watch a story or something. maybe you want to try that next time you get yourself into hotwater like this? good luck in the next times.

well i feel brought down now. my jeans have rips in them thanks to the oven door and my tee-shirt wears a funny brown stain, thanks to Squirrel's model of a cockatoo which she put on the radiator to dry, even though my tee-shirt had got there first.

I'm sorry, but that's the ugliest dress I've ever seen, and that model certainly doesn't help -- what kind of pose is that?! She doesn't flatter the dress, nor does it flatter her. Any woman caught dead in that dress should be buried in a closed casket.

By the way, Ladies, when you wear a wrap dress (and hopefully not that particular one--what an eyesore!) pin it together somewhere between the waistline and the hem of the skirt to avoid it coming unwrapped.

nice. can be worn in the office (as long as there is no strict rule about plunging necklines). can be worn in parties, gets-together, or casually. elegant and sexy with a touch of conservativeness.

Congrats on being made a Blog of the Day! Interesting blog. Have to say, with Diane Von Furstenberg it's not an "age" thing, it's a "style" thing. Diane Von Furstenberg wrap dresses are iconic because they are simple, universally flattering, well-made, and timeless- no matter what year it was bought it will always be in style. Buying one means you've become mature enough to embrace quality. And I'll have to disagree with d.t.- don't buy a cheap imitation and have it tailored to fit. It will cost more in the end and be a big hassle- not to mention the results will likely disappoint you. Trust me on this. Save your money and invest in the real thing, or keep haunting your local thrift or consignment stores.

I have a couple of DvF dresses. I don't agree about pinning it. It spoils the drape as the fabric will move as you wear it and you will end up with loose or too tight fabric above the pin. I would also say that many of the cuts work better on slender girls (hence your good experience with the fit around the bust). If you have big boobs or a bit of a tummy the proportions are wrong - even if you go up one or two sizes, the whole doesn't sit well. You have to be selective within the range. Finally, sometimes the hem on the edge running from the waist tie to the hip is not banded/stitched down, it's just a kind of deep fold with the very edge of the fabric overlocked. I find that this fold tends to become unfolded as you wear the garment and means that the edge of the skirt doesn't hang neatly. For the price of a DvF garment I think this is completely unacceptable. Some of the dresses are not constructed like this, and have the edge fully stitched down.

Yes,I do agree that wrap dresses seem to define the figure so perfectly if chosen properly. These dresses can be worn to almost every place then be it office, a nightout, shopping or a simple dinner.

I came across a site called Fashion Products which offers information on women apparel, the latest trends in the market, the hot labels of the season, etc.

Wraps are the BEST. I can't afford DvF dresses, but find really nice ones at JCPenney for under $50. They fit great, and go fabulously from office to nightclub in one day. They look great with pumps or with boots or a blazer. You just cannot go wrong with a wrap. I not only love how they look, but with the stretchy fabric that most of them are made from, I love the way they feel, too.

I have never had one come untied from the inside tie; the outside one comes untied if not tied correctly, but this is rare.

The deep v-neck can be intimidating and uncomfortable for some women; I wear a matching camisole underneath.

I think the best part of a wrap is that it is TIMLESS; you could hang a wrap in your closet and forget about it for five years, pull out out, put it on and it is still in style.

Wraps are definitely NOT a trendy, donate kinda dress. Even if you did pay $200 for a DvF, you would get your money's worth out of it for years and years and years. Lots of miles in that dress!

THANKS DIANE!!
