The Most Expensive Handbags

You'd think that the birkins of the world were already expensive enough, but no, savvy designers just keep on coming up with even more extravagant creations to top the last one. Topping the Forbes list of the most extravagant bags in the world this year was not the Hermes Birkin*gasp*. The honor this time around goes to Chanel (ah the ever business savvy Karl), with this "Diamond Forever" bag worth $260,150USD. This limited edition classic Chanel shoulder bag (there is only 13!) is made of alligator skin with 334 diamonds (3.56 carats) encrusting the iconic Chanel C's set in 18-carat white gold. From the picture it doesn't look too different from a classic Chanel bag (you'd think that the 334 diamonds would look shinier and more impressive ), except for the alligator texture. And personally, I don't see the attraction of alligator skin. Admittedly, this one doesn't look bad with its creamy color and the subtle texture. But in general, I don't like alligator skins because it resembles too much the actual animal and that creeps be out no end.Coming in second is the super luxe version of the Birkin, the "Crocodile Birkin" at $120,000USD. Similarly made of crocodile skin (I really don't see the attraction with crocodiles), it too has a diamond encrusted clasp set in white gold. Though this time there are 10 carats. Hm...why is this less expensive than the Chanel one? Clearly this is the better bargain (if there is such thing as a bargain for such super luxe bags), especially since there are only 2 of them in the world. It wins hands down with size, rock and exclusivity!

If money were no object, which one would you prefer?

The Birkin for me !
That is, if I had the money, and if I did have that kind of money, I think I'd be buying more than just one bag, don't you think.

These bags are nice but they look like regular Chanel and Birkin bags the diamond incrusted detail doesnt really stand out, but maybe thats just the pictures. If I had that kind of money and was going to blow it on a bag I believe I would want it to be more unique!

Neither
1. Poor crocodiles
2. I don't even like croc imitation
3. the diamond touch doesn't really stand out

I don't know but I'd have to say that those are possibly the ugliest bags I've ever seen. They're more trophies than stylish pieces.

I love Chanel but dislike their handbags, too showy. Most girls only by them for the big CC. Hermes is sort of a fashionable standard, only a truely stylish girl can pick one out of a crowd and know that it's one of the nicest bags in the world. Even though both are extraordinary, I have to go with the Hermes, it looks classier.

i think part of the charm of the berkin is that it's a relatively unassuming, but extremely well-made bag. it doesn't scream at you the way some others do, and the only way to really liven it up is to choose a bright color or interesting skin. i like the look of croc but coating it in diamonds seems wrong. berkins should whisper, not scream "look at me!" i'd take a regular chanel or non-"blinged" berkin over either of these any day.

I'm usually a big sucker for Chanel bags (What can I say? Karl knowns what I like!) but this one is sort of an inbetween color: not quite white, not quite a pale rose. And the whole "chains with unfinished edge alligator skin" handles is a real turn off; it looks like it'd be uncomfortable and the leather would tear too easily to endure the stress even the dressiest of purses must face.

So, like most people, I gotta go with the good-ol' berkin for the over all win. Touché, Gaultier.

The chanel is vulgar...boxy and just a little ugly as for the birkin it's sleeker classier and wins hands down as the ultimate status symbol for those ladies in society who want us all to know they have more money than a small country's GDP....

neither one of these. the chanel is ugly, and i wouldn't want a birkin made from crocodile, the material really doesn't do it for me.

the only chanel bags i like are the small quilted pursues (very understated and chic). but a hermes birkin bag (the normal leather ones) would be wonderful to own!

ew the alligator texture looks creepy xD but it is a nice design. i'd think i'd pick the birkin, because it's shiny :p
i'm still in love with the one miumiubag that i *think* harrod's girl has.(can't remember :$)

A Chanel classic flap has always been my ambition, but this one just doesn't look right, so I would have to go with the Birkin. It will increase in value over time and you get more diamonds for your money!

Maybe it's 10 carats but broken up into smaller individual diamonds.

And I would just take the money and buy 100 nicer expensive handbags.

I would get the birkin! After all, it IS a hermes, THE bag of all bags. Even though I really love Chanel.. :)

neither. I think all that bling undermines my concept of a classic designer bag. The birkin and the chanel are both all about class, and I dont think that appears with the diamond encrusted versions. I'd rather get the elegant originals than this. Even if it is limited edition and all that.

Wow, I didn't know there was a Forbes most extravagant bags... good to know!

I'm with you on the Birkin bag, it is definitely more worth the bagillion dollars over the Chanel.

totally the birkin bag
although the Chanel is also a classic and more expensive,
personally i still prefer the birkin style instead of that chanel 2.55

Hmmm...I do like *some* Chanel bags, but this one is just unattractive and the handles are kind of ugly, plus the diamonds don't even stand out! (maybe it's just the picture?) I'd go with the Birkin. But I would'nt spend THAT much on a bag - maybe 10,000 (if money were no object), but 250,000?!?!

I would have to say neither. I totally agree with you on the alligator skin. If I had to pick I think I'd go for the Birkin.

It's just ridiculous to have in 2007 a bag with crocodile skin, and to show this in a weblog is even more ridiculous ! Wake up ! Of course you don't have any "attraction" with crocodiles for doesn't mind to have a bag with their skin.

Incredible. My wife got me thinking about expensive luxury handbags when we went to a store and saw a handbag for around $500.00 -- I thought it was OK price especially since it was a quality product. But $150,000 bag - exclusivity.

Luckily I'm not a woman, otherwise I'd have sold my house for some of these!

Yes but some designer handbags like Chanel, Hermes, Calvet, Celine, and even Vuitton have those price tags because they are really luxurious. Besides, most of the real luxury houses like these ones I just mentioned do not get their skins from the wild (PETA PEOPLE); they use farmed skins. There are world regulations about the use of certain animals like gators and such. In any instance, I would love to have a bag from them any day of the week.
