2007 Trend: The Slogan Tees

80's styled, bright-coloured slogan tees are 'in' this year. This unfortunate trend was started by House of Holland, which basically makes loads of this kind of tees. I suppose one of the reasons why it caught people's attention was the cheeky slogans about other designers and models, (such as "Do Me Daily Christopher Bailey" and "Wham Bam Thank You Stam" or somthing like that.) I really didn't mind this trend back when the only people I saw wearing the tees were in magazines and websites. Unfortunately, my local department store has recently started selling them and now I'm actually seeing the tees worn on people and featured in local magazines around me! Bleh, I'm obviously no fan of this look.

And thanks to rising model Agyness Deyn, who is claimed to be 'cool and hip' by various magazines, House of Holland tees are now also considered to be 'cool and hip'. Uh, tacky colours much? (And I mean both Aggy's makeup and the tee, or maybe it's the combination of both.)

If you simply can't resist this trend, consider these very affordable choices by Urban Outfitters (left) and Top Shop (right.) Just because I don't like this trend doesn't mean I'm going to stop you from experimenting. Afterall, fashion's meant to be fun too and I'm sure lots of people out there love this trend!

So ok, I still don't completely get why so many people and supposedly classy magazines like Vogue are crazy for these tees. They're just so... unclassy and flashy. But I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Plus, trends pass by so quickly these days, so why not? What does everyone think about this trend?

I have a couple of views on this trend. The first is that there was a little creatvity in making up the slogans...But mainly that I'm not sure how this reached the high fashion world. I mean tees? Its a bit surprising.

blech, this trend reminds me of third grade when little girls wore shirts that said 'Angel' on them. i didnt like it then, and i dont like it now.

The "Franky Say Relax" shirt that I've seen Mary-Kate Olsen wear are by far the cutest out this style of shirt.

I saw this trend when I was shopping in Urban Outfitters. I just cant stand it. Too flashy, too tacky. Just my opinion, though. I'm not a 'tee' fan.

Um, haven't message T's been a trend for a few years now? It's highly annoying.

And maybe I'm an oldie on this blog, but the Frankie Says Relax T's are from the 80s band Frankie Goes to Hollywood :)

I have to admit this trend could be tolerated in small doses..namely when in the form of House of Holland's cheeky slogans...however the high street copies are not only tacky but hideously unimaginative! and when you have a sea of teens in day glo tees with bland meaningless statements on, its just plain unbearable!

I dislike this trend. As a teen I've seen waaay too many slogan shirts with unimaginative slogans like "I like your boyfriend." or "100% Angel". I'm okay with the ones from House of Holland which have a little bit of wit in them but I prefer to let the younger kids wear those slogan tees.

Agghh, I hate Agyness Deyn. Talentless model with a fake name. She's one of my least favorite models.

I completely agree-those slogan tees are terribly tacky and flashy. The colors are bright and ugly too. The only slogan tee I think is kind of cute is the "Frankie says relax" tee worn by Mary Kate (or maybe it was just the way she wore it?). For some reason I like that phrase and also Mk, I think it's because when I was little I would watch their movies, haha.

Ew, I liked this trend ages ago, like in February or January, when it first came out. But what really put me off it was when I was walking through a mall here and saw two 15 year old girls wearing ksubi jeans and the House of Holland tees. I'm pretty sure they didn't even know who Hedi Slimane and Christopher Bailey are.

so tacky and unimaginative now. it might have been cool and original once upon a time but anyone who wears this now will definetly be laughed at!

i think part of the reason i cant stand this trend is because of agyness. she's definately not someone who i would consider a great model, i really don't like her look.

in australia, a chain store called supre (which specialises in fairly cheap, teeny-bopper bordering on quite slutty and unoriginal clothing) has been selling these t-shirts, so its a DEFINATE turn-off on the whole.

I don't see what the big fuss is about, the tees aren't all that bad. You think the tees are flashy and tacky, but it's okay for the neon colors and futuristic trend, right? I just don't understand your reasoning.

I like agyness, and the pictures on the Henry Holland website. She's more of a modern day Edie then Sienna Miller.
The nu rave trend is getting a little tired, definitely.

Yeah, Forever 21 (of course) probably has the worst knock off ones. But I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a Holland authentic, just in case I go to a rave because I always find myself not knowing what to wear when I go to raves. Oh, and that was 50% serious ...

i'm with you. i totally don't get it. then again, i've never really understood tees with bold statements--especially the ones that say stuff like "your boyfriend thinks i'm hotter". i've always avoided people who wore them.

I don't think the shirts are that tacky, as long as the slogan is good.
However, it is tacky that people don't realize that the "Frankie Says Relax" tshirts were around in the 80s after a song. Sorry, but Mary Kate wasn't the first.

I remember these t-shirts the first time they came out in the 80s. I wasn't really a fan although I did like some of the slogans. I am not at all surprised that they have made a comeback as the 80s scene is all the rage now what with wedges, pencil skirts and skinny jeans.

Actually we do realize that the slogan actually has a meaning. Which is why there is a HUGE difference between the Frankie says relax tees and the hollister tshirts that have been popular for awhile now. Just because a 17 year old is wearing it, doesnt mean they dont know what its about.

it seems odd to me that everyone is comparing the ironic and witty hoh tees with cheep angel and don't hate me because i'm beatuful tops. i can't stand the cheezy copies, but the house of holland ones are fun. i like them better when they're large and worn as dresses. too bad they're so expensive!

I actually like this trend!
HOWEVER high street copies are usually a load of crap - they have pointless slogans and mean nothing. House of Holland is THE master of the slogan tee, with great slogans full of wit & puns.
I personally can't wait to get my hands on the 'I'll Show You Who's Boss Kate Moss' tee.
And why are people comparing this to kids t-shirts with angel on them? It's completely different.
Plus, the colours are MEANT to be bright - ever heard of nu-rave and neon people?
Agyness Deyn's make-up and tee is a statement - it's meant to be bright and tacky instead of your usual neutral stuff. I personally admire her for taking a stand and going against normal fashion expectations.

I too like this trend actually. I really hate the ones that have tacky sayings. I actually own quite a few. I buy all of them from a store called Zara. I think its the only one in Calgary(which is where I live) so rarely do I see ppl wearing the same clothes as myself. I wear them with either straigt/skinny jeans or else tights. And then I wear flatts to add a little flare and a little less casual to them. I love it when theres big print, however sometimes the colors are all wrong. Also, Agyness Deyn is definitely not the greatest choice for this trend. She's way too out there with her makeup and other fashion statements. I wish these oversized, graphic tees were more accepted =( too bad I guess everyone has there personal opinion about fashion.

I prefer tight t-shirts to baggy but think Agyness totally fits this look, sort of a indie/electro update to raver style.

ok, first of all, i ADORE agyness.
second, minus the rest of the outfit, the house of holland tees on their own look really cool and the color combos are great
third, the knockoffs are UGLY!! the font is TOTALLY disproportionate, and they have no contrasting neck-fabric.
stop putting cheapo knockoffs. how about something like H&M, which is affordable and cute?

I'm actually glad that they have revived the 80's slogan t-shirts.I mean whats WRONG with wanting to make a statement.

What's more comfortable then throwing on a baggy t-shirt,some sunnies and jeans and still be able to be effortlessly cool.

Although I don't see this trend hanging around for long, which I'm sure will make all of you's glad,I see a lot of people happy with being able to wear bright colours.Which in turn makes me happy because of my love affair with fashion:)

Henry Holland has created the ultimate slogan t-shirt. Witty slogans on good quality shirts with awesome colours. I am a huge House of Holland fan and nearly died when cheap copies came out at high street stores, on terrible material with extremely lame slogans.
I think if you wear a House of Holland and actually get what the slogans mean, then you should be proud that you are not a cheap copy.

I don't get it with the House of Holland tees. I live in Singapore and cheap stores here do really horrible knockoffs. they don't even get the font right (eg. don't fill in the holes) and their placement sucks.

what gives the tees their punch are the cheeky fun slogans, and the kncokoffs in singapore have slogans on that are nowhere near similar to the Henry Holland slogans.

however, i feel the entire point is moot because what's the point of wearing such a fun slogan if you know everyone else could wear it too? also, henry holland tees are absolute ripoffs.

i think i'll stick to my plain, color-block tees for now, thanks.

I really don't like these shirts. They may be called "cool and hip," but I think they look like something out of a bad 80's movie.
