Barneys Girl's first impression of LA

Hey Darlings, I'm back from my mini-post-finals-holiday in LA! Not back to Chicago, but back home where I have internet access at all times (albeit a very slow one). This was my first time in LA, and even though I was only there for little less than 2 days, it has left quite an impression on me. When we first arrived, we drove around and did our touristy duty passing by the famous houses of Beverly Hills, Sunset Boulevard and of course- Hollywood. And to be honest, I was quite disappointed.
Ok, so the mansions at Beverly Hills look pretty. But its just not very exciting looking at it from outside, in a moving car and through the gated fence and the super high hedges. Not quite as fun as those shows on TV where they actually show u the inside.
Next we passed through Sunset Boulevard, which I read is supposed to be quite the touristy place. Maybe it is and I just didn't have time to tour it properly. But driving pass it by car, it did not motivate me to leap out of the car to explore it in the first place. To me, it looked just like another LA street, which btw I am not very impressed by. Being a city girl, I was unused to seeing such short old buildings and dirty streets, with everything worth going miles and miles apart.
Then our next stop was Hollywood. Somehow, I've been giving the impression that Hollywood is all that glamorous. But I was sorely disappointed. I wasn't even aware I'd entered Hollywood until i was told. Did not see the famous Hollywood sign. And the Kodak Cinema looked like the entrance to a mall (was I looking at the right building?) and it was basically again, just another LA street, except this one had stars on the pavement. I feel so misled.
Before i went, I was also told that Beverly Center is a GREAT mall to shop at. So I was all psyched to go shopping there. And again I was sorely disappointed. It was deserted, many stores were closed because they were having electricity problems and it looked just like any other mall one would expect to find in suburbia. I mean, it had many stores that I love, like AX, Lacoste and Bloomies, but there just is NO point going to one in LA. My trip ended up with me buying stuff from brands that I could've gotten anywhere in the States. Not that I don't love them, but still. Wish I had time to explore Melrose Street and visit Intuition and Fred Segal. Oh and should u want to go to a mall in LA, I recommend Century City at Beverly Hills. I like the out in the open atmosphere there more.

See! I warned you that Hollywood was dull and so not glam. The glam bit is where there's a car chase of reporters vs celebs or when there's a red carpet event with celebs wearing gorgeous clothes. But at least you had a marvelous time looking around and absorbing the air of the beautiful people there.

We must plan to go to Europe together some time this or next year! And we're such perfect travelling companions because we'll both refuse to stay in hostels and walk similar speed. Not to mention you can save me if I start crossing roads without looking.

Have to agree with you. I think LA is only good if you have a LOT of money and a nice mansion in Beverly Hills. I went last september and though I was fully prepared to be disappointed after reading up on it, I just couldn't get over the fact that Marilyn Monroe's star on the walk of fame was right outside McDonalds. It was such a let-down!

Had lots of fun constantly walking in and out of th Kodak centre pretending it was Oscar night, though.

Hollywood is an industry town. It's where the work gets done, not the partying. LA, Beverly Hills, etc, are all fun places, but the neighborhoods are so compartmentalized and the real nightlife so exclusive that unless you live there or are willing to spend like you do, you probably won't get the celebrity experience or whatever you were after.

LA is definitely not new york, however, you were in the wrong parts of town, missy. Had you done your shopping on robertson and melrose and avoided hollywood altogether, your experience would have been different. Hollywood is a scientology-filled shit hole, and there's no reason to go there.
what about the beaches? Santa monica would have changed your perspective.
Tourists always put so much of their trip in to seeing the glamorous hollywood, which is why they are always disappointed. Instead, you should have eaten lunch at Urth caffe, where the famous people always eat- I stood in line next to jared leto there last week, for example.
LA is a great city, but sadly people just don't know where to go when they visit and then they rant to their friends about how it sucked. Next time maybe you'll get some better advice about where to go. Sorry your trip was not more enjoyable.

Hollywood's pretty crappy, Malibu's a disaster, Beverly Hills is average.

Your pictures are fantastic, though! Esp. the Sunset Boulevard one.

I agree. There are cool things in this crazy city. I love visiting independent designers at the downtown fashion district and checking out the cool boutiques in Studio City or Old Town Pasadena. There's the Getty, Moca, Little Tokyo, and Chinatown. :)

Melrose is fabulous, and in Newport fashion island is a different country.
I didn't go to the places you went to to (Hollywood when I went to Universal for a little bit) and I had a completely different experience.

Yes, everytime I have visitors who are just clamoring to see the walk of fame, I have to warn them that it's in an extremely crappy part of town and actually pretty gross. Angelinos usually never go there.

The problem with LA is that it's so big and spread out that the cool spots can be hard to find and are few and far between.

I assume you shopped Rodeo, right?

Cranky Bisquit was right. "LA" is so spread out that it's hard to get the full view of it unless you spend a week going around to all the sights. The Beverly Center is a crappy mall, imo. You should've hit up South Coast Plaza (do you watch the OC? Marissa shoplifted from there in the first season). Another fun place to go is the 3rd Street Promenade (though Santa Monica is a crappy beach). Melrose & Robertson are a must too, except the annoying paparazzi (sp?) that are always outside Kitson now.

Next time, get more suggestions! LA is actually a great city. You just need to get pointed in the right directions.
