My US Shopping List

I'm off to my annual San Francisco (plus LA this time) trip this Sunday and I'm now in the process of researching about LA and compiling my shopping list. One reason why I love going to the States once a year is that there are certain brands or products that are only available in the States or are cheaper there. I love making lists so here is what I have so far:

Even though there are Urban Outfitters shops in the UK, the US UO things are so much cheaper! For example, a graphic T-shirt is around 23 pounds in London but around 28usd in the States. One item I want to check out is the Lux cinch dress. It looks so easy to wear and pracitcal -one of those items that can take the dresser from daytime to nightime activities.
Another thing I just found on UO's website is this Lux dress. It looks really cool in the picture but it could look cheap and awkward in real life so I really must check it out.
I've never been to an American Apparel shop before and I've been wanting to go so I can't wait. So many people seem to love American Apparel at FashionSpot. American Apparel sells really boring, basic clothes so I probably shouldn't have such high expectations but I do love plain clothes. The first thing I want to check out is this tank dress (and any other useful basics).
The other item is this cardigan. It looks perfect to wear to school this fall -simple and goes with jeans. Afterall, who has time to think before rushing to class?
Onto beauty products, after reading so many rave reviews on Urban Decay's Eye Primer Potion (at MUA and from you guys,) I am determined to buy a few bottles -one for me and a few for friends who have requested I buy it for them too!
OPI nail polish, which is my favourite nail polish brand, is very expensive in Hong Kong (about HK$120 per bottle,) so my mum and I are definitely going to stock up. BG tells me they sell for around 6USD in the States so I'm hoping they're about the same price in San Francisco too. The most important thing is the base and top layer.
Then onto basic (but fun) colours -red and nude.
I recently saw a friend who had wine/ maroon-ish purple nails and they look so sophisticated. But I really can't tell the difference between the many shades of purple! Perhaps this colour is becoming fashionable because OPI's new Russian collection seems to be all about this colour!
And finally -books! On my list so far are Charmed Thirds by Megan Mccafferty (in paperback finally,) Bitch: In Praise of Difficult Women by Elizabeth Wurtzel (only because I love Wurtzel so much,) and The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton.
Opinions? Anything else I should add onto the list?

the Urbanoutfitters cinch dress is cute but it's practically see through. you need to wear a slip underneath it or something.

A&F, jeans, underwears (Victoria Secrets, or any brands at Macy's, they are cheap), make-up/skincare/shampoo like clinique, estee lauder, kiehl's, bobbi brown, laura mercier, etc.

Not sure if you have Origins or Lush but they are both great skincare/lotion/bath products. Great scents.

The UO in San Fran is Fabulous! I fell in love with it when I was there. There is also a Benefit store in the same area. Have a fun trip!

You should check out Abercrombie and Fitch, Hollister, and American Eagle. Gap and Old Navy are cheaper, but still have nice stuff. You will love them...at least I know I do. Have fun on your trip!

I love the look of the cardigan, but I can't find it on the American Apparel Website. Do you know what the official product name is so that I can search for it?

Thanks!!!

One item I love from American Apparel is their Interlock pencil skirt (http://store.americanapparel.net/rsa7302.html).

If you have the figure for it, it fits fabulously, is extremely comfortable, and can be dressed up or down.

I have the cinch dress and mine is not see through. But I have the purple-ish color which is dark so I guess that's why. I love it.

Also check out Anthropologie. I'm sure they're bound to have on in SanFran

As someone said, check out Anthropologie; there's one in downtown San Francisco on Market Street right across from the SF Shopping Center.

One of my personal favorites which you'll find a nice abbundance of in SFO is Nordstroms. Some of my own personal wishlist Nordies items are:

-Over-sized clutches (Which are a bit expensive on this page, but the Nordstroms Pre-Fall sale I think is still going on, so, hit the sales tables! Also, there's a few more moderately priced ones in the juniors department.)

-The Modernized Carpet Bag

-And some, yes, don't laugh: Jessica Simpson Boot Heels.

As for the rest of SFO, there's some great, great shopping to be had, especially on Union Street between Fillmore and Vaness. Have fun!

Julie - the cardigan is available at the American Apparel site; you can reach it by following this link (http://tinyurl.com/2o6br4) or look under their jackets.

I love this blog!

I love the American Apparel cardigan. It's really adorable! I hope you have a nice trip to California.

I would be careful about the OPI nude nail polish though. I just got a manicure and picked out a nude polish from OPI.. and well once it was on my nails.. it actually turned out to be more silvery and not at all nude! It looked very nude in the bottle though. I think it may be the same one as in the picture you posted.

I know there's American Apparel shops in London too, but they're not located very close to me and I've always been too lazy to find it.

I'll def go to all the shops suggested here, (except for Lush which I simply don't like.)

judging by your style and posts on this site, you will hate:
abercrombie and fitch, hollister, old navy, american eagle, gap, buckle. i'd say they're a waste of time for you.
but you'd probably love: anthropologie, MNG (but i think you have that in uk), BCBG boutiques, Betsey johnson boutiques, forever 21 (cheap but awesome, like topshop), lacoste is way cheaper here, express, zara is cheaper here too.

have fun!

DO NOT go to abercrombie and fitch, hollister, american eagle, etc and the like. It's SERIOUS crap.Like Anon said, judging by your taste on the blog, these stores will be a waste of time for you. Everyone in America basically shops there. The clothes are tacky, have labels all over them, have NOTHING special EXCEPT the labels, which is lame, etc. These are clothes for highschool cliques, not someone who would call herself a fashionista. Just like the Juicy suits and all. Cringe.

On another note, I'd def. check out American Apparel and UO, it's basically where most of my clothes are from (other than boutiques, vintage stores.

American Apparel- Simple-cut, beautiful, colourful, comfortable AMAZING clothes. The may look very basic and on some they may seem, but if you know how to match, accessorize, and play with the bold colours they offer, it is amazing. I love their dresses (especially the Bandeau dresses, either pencil or regular, you can wear them in so many ways! there are 10 ways on their website, i think, in videos. And the U-Neck dress. It fits like a sex God.) and tees/tanks (I like the V-Neck summer Tee, and the Tri-blend material) AND THE HOODIES! ;D

Urban Outfitters- I think they are over-price ($40 for printed tees?), but if I had more money, I'd def. know where to spend it. They also have great sales, and I'd live in there if I could. If you guys have a good shoe selection in the U.S, then, well, fuck you. Enough said. I'd buy anything from here, and I'm lazy, so, yeah, I'm lazy.

I've never been to the US but I'm dying to go there as everything is so much more expensive in my country, Iceland. I've ordered online at Urban Outfitters but with taxes and all it's not so cheap.
But I love the Lux cinch dress and the striped American Apparel cardigan. Have a great time in San Fransisco/LA :)

I hope you have a great trip. Definitely check out Target. they have great accessories for cheap. I don't know which ones are on the West coast, but I also like Ross, T.J. Maxxx, and Stein Mart for real bargains (of the three, Ross is the cheapest, but Steinmart has somewhat higher end stuff). Sears can also have great sales. I got several necklace+earring sets there last weekend for about $2.50. They weren't gem stones or anything, but definitely cute.

Love your blog! Designer jeans are so much better priced in the States. Check out somewhere like the Blues Jean Bar in SF to pick out a great pair from a large selection. I agree with the previous suggestion of Anthropologie.

anthropologie is fabulous, like a better quality, higher end UO.

i second the suggestion not to go to AE, A&F, etc.

american apperal is rather hit or miss for me. some things fit well, others don't. you just really have to try everything on.

have fun!

I actually have that Lux dress. Very cute in real life. I have not seen one at an Urban store yet. I got mine online.

You should try to find Fiberwig mascara at Sephora. It's a Japanese brand that makes you look like you are wearing false lashes!

You guys actually got me to go to the mall. Only to find out that it is, by and large, overpriced junk. I've always known this, but I mistakenly thought something would be different, after reading some of the comments. I checked out Forever 21, Macy's and J.Crew. Forever 21 didn't have anything that caught my attention (and I was only looking for pants), J. Crew had some overpriced casual pants for 68 dollars (and they weren't any good anyway), and Macy's, though their stuff was somewhat conservative, had the best clothes of the lot. Needless to say, I didn't find anything.

If you want to get good clothes at an inexpensive price in the U.S., try Marshall's, T.J. Maxx, and Kohl's. Marshall's and T.J. Maxx are owned by the same company, but generally have different stuff, while Kohl's is a big department store, geared toward a younger crowd. You can find really great things at these stores, at generally low prices. Granted, 80% of their stuff is junk (and that's being optimistic), but if you are looking for something specific, and it is in season, you will find something at one of those three stores.

I reposted this because it didn't look like the website took my first comment.

I think the best American Apparel store is in Silverlake and coincidentally you'll find lots of cute stores there too. I know you were into your sneaker thing a few months back and there's a great store called Undefeated in Silverlake as well. Fred Segal has great make up and beauty supplies. I wish I could narrow down some stores but shopping in LA is a lot of fun. You could also try White Trash Charms in Los Feliz. It's very fun in there. Barneys and Neimans still have the best shoes. And Chestnut St. in SF has great shops.

While at Urban outfitters check out Lux high waisted skinny jeans. They look great on Asian figures. It also comes in a great color-dark rinse and is very comfortable because of the stretch. And it is just $68. It looks like those $300 jeans. Please everyone we have to stop buying these expensive jeans(anything over $100) It's such a rip off.

They have American Apparel here so we can go when you guys come. Also I love Bubble Bath by OPI. It's a really pretty pink.

ooooh, I love that american apparel cardigan and the lux cinch dress is adorable. you should check out kohl's, they have vera wang's new budget line, and it's supposed to be really nice (I live in Canada, no kohl's...so I don't know what it's really like); it's always worth going to h&m and zara, but the european zaras are a lot nicer than north american ones; anthropologie is really cute (I love their shoes!) but kind of expensive; target is really good too (we don't have any in Canada, boo); and forever 21 is supposed to be really cute and cheap. If you're ever in Canada, you should check out smart set (www.smart-set.com), it's affordable, really cute/classic and good quality. I don't think they have them in the states.
have a fun trip!
